buying stuff in MWO is not as cheep as some other games, but in this game it is very possible to be competitive at the top levels without spending any real money.

the only things you have to pay real money for are cosmetic, early access or time saving in nature

QFT.

Now that they offer Hellbringers for CBills, every competitive mech (CW, solo, PUB) can be bought with in-game earnings. As far as colors, wait til a 50% off sale. That's how I got my black/white/red colors. I had to wait quite a bit, unfortunately, but they were worth it.

there definitely were several colours available for cbills, I am not certain if that is still the case and the colours were hardly the prettiest available but (assuming they are still available) it would definitely allow more than just the green colour scheme.

just checked and there are still 5 basic colours, the green is already unlocked, there is also a purple, a blue, a red and an orange (the red and orange both look more brown than the colour in there name), they are all drab colours but definitely offer a bit of visual customization without spending real money, unlocking costs 1,250,000 cbills each

Mechbays can be bough with MC from events, won outright through some events, and received as rewards from community warfare (at rank 2 in any faction). All of those ways are generally based on participation -- they do not require very high player skill. As said before, somewhat regular play will get you supplied with basic goodies for free.

I see lots of back and forth about the camo unlock. You CAN unlock for all the mechs of one chassis with one purchase. Here a video to show you how that works.

Pretty funny that the topic of half-off mech bays was brought up just hours before announcing a half-off mech bay sale. Had myself a good chuckle.

I like the C-bill colors, I only bought the orange so far, but i use it with a pale yellow and brown on tons of my mechs.. Looks very sharp. I should pick up the rest though.. make use of the C-bill bonus this weekend on my misery, and get some more paint options, i am sick of saving 6m for each module,, i think i should take a break and buy some splash! :)

OP: Like the others have said wait for sales, but as most everything is a can use a c-bill grind.. If you play a decent amount, paying for a full year of Premium is a pretty good deal. Just remember, it was only a few years ago, that online games were all paid monthly, and typically 15 bucks a month. that's 180 dollars a year.. for 180 bucks, you can get a full 12 mech package, and pay for a year of premium. that really is not that bad of a deal. I personally don't have a ton to spend on a single game, but for my 60 bucks, i have a bunch of heroes, 50 mechs, and close to 20 colors, and have played the game for two years. I would not call that high priced in the least

Colors for C-Bills still exist. I used them for a long time. Basic Red, and Basic Blue were my favorites.

imo the cbill colors are terrible. I mean, it's a color, but they don't really go well together and they are about the dullest color you can have. The default green is the best one. I got them when they first introduced colors and they were 50% off but I can't recommend them to anyone personally. You're better off spending some cash on a couple nicer colors.

F2P cosmetic prices are high because they are luxuries that command luxury prices, which is actually a necessity for these games to stay afloat. I'm drooling over the Mecha Tassadar skin for Heroes of the Storm, but Blizzard wants $15 for that. And yet, here I am considering the insanity of paying that, for a cosmetic nothing. Has the world gone insane? Probably, but we'll never know, because we're part of it.

If you add up the mc price of unlocking the colors for any inner sphere house you should just buy a resistance 2 pack and get the mech bays and mechs (one of which will have a hero bonus) along with them. 20 dollars gets you 6 colors that are 1000 mc (or more) each, 3 cockpit items that are around 500 each, and 3 mechs with mech bays, plus a faction camo unlock and 30 days premium time banked. Also you get early access to the chassis. The deal is even sweeter if you early adopt because of the extra variant, extra premium time and if you do it early enough the pilot modules that can add up to 15 million or more cbills. People can hate all they want but it really is a deal that you don't find in other ftp games.

I've done the math on this ever since the Phoenix pack came out. On average, you are getting 1.5 times what you are paying, and if you go for higher packs, it can go up to double or triple what you're paying. They are insanely good deals, and people don't usually notice them, because they look at the price tag, and freak out.

You're foregetting that if you get higher tiers, you get more camo, and paint unlocks on top of it.

You can use any paint you purchase on any mech you own. Camo on the other hand is mechs/chasis specific depending on if you buy the one shot or not.

If you want paint or camo it's best to wait until it is on sale. Actually anything you want to buy with MC (except maybe mech bays) you should wait until it is on sale.

Mechbays are best for sales, it's ALWAYS 50% off, 2 for the price of 1.

In fact... 50% sale for mechbays are this weekend.

Russ said it would happen eventually, however I had not realized the option was there for the Wave 3 (I) variants, and I will wait until we get the faction camo unlocked (those who ordered wave3 will get to chose faction camo for there ordered variants when the last Mechs are released).

I am pretty sure no other special variants or heroes have the option to change patten yet but of course correct me if I am wrong

Oh I'm not forgetting, no doubt the value goes up as you buy higher tiers, and is increased by buying sooner rather than later.
As an example I bought tier 4 of wave 3, even though I hate the executioner and have little intent of driving it. I stripped it and parted it out to my other clan mechs. Probably won't sell it, but if I did I would still have 3 mechbays, the cockpit items and the camo unlocks for all of those mechs. I always choose one of each faction pack.
