And people don't believe me when I say rewards are ruining the fun. Seriously, as soon as there are personal rewards people are gaming the system to maximize their gain. Screw the team, screw the fun, bring higher numbers so I can measure my success and prove my worth...

There are many forum warriors that specifically state they don't target because they don't want others to come in and steal their kill. Yes they know about the paper doll information but they deem that less important than the information warfare battle they fight with their own team. Sad but true.
Yeah that's why I don't believe in the whole idea of "kill steals" makes you do really stupid stuff. Nothing is easier to kill then an enemy mech under LRM fire. And the best way to get more kills is to get easy kills.

My friend that is the logic of Group drops.
Solo is a ghetto of skill-less scrubs and antisocial thrill seekers(like us Locust pilots).
There is no unity like Pug-unity.

I find that many players often have itchy trigger fingers and will fire the moment they have a target. They will not consider whether or not its possible to get into a better firing position first.
Sometimes, if the enemy is not aware of my presence, I want to be able to observe them a little longer and wait for the right chance to go in a blow out someone's rear armor. At these times, I refuse to lock on any mech because I don't want some LRM boat or some other trigger happy sniper spoiling my plan. Its not that I don't want to share the kill. I just have a better plan in mind than to have you give away my location.

People fought for kills in video games before "rewards" were invented, the kill is it's own reward. It's war, we wan't the highest kill count. It's a good thing too, it means more people are focusing the same target.

Instead of having kills/assists they should just have fractional kills awarded to everyone who damaged the enemy mech based on the proportion of damage they did.
So if you did 80% of the damage you get .8 kills. If you did 10% of the damage you get .1 kills. Etc...
Bam fixed. You get rewarded based on how much damage you did. Rather than swooping in last second to get the kill.

I just shoot my teammates in the back when they do that. If theres no consequences to doing that theyll never learn any better. Plus its satisfying.

But yeah, people being afraid of LRMs "stealing their kill" is one reason, general rookieness is another (they don't know or don't understand how valuable the damage readout is).
carefull, targetiing when you ambush someone is nto always a good idea. There is flashing in your cockpit when someone locks you with R. So Pilots with awareness will realsie this and probably smell the ambush.
I spam R as much as possible when its at the start of the match and fuirst encounter happens, to indicate the team where opponents are.
Also when combat is already engaged, becaue your opponent is aware already that you are there.

you deserve to be team killed at the beginning of the game then though
seriously though i remember your name and will shoot 60 alpha to your back (which hits like srms if you bar its way) every time when i see you behind me and any target which i locked

Yep, people like that are the ones that quote high damages saying they are always on horrible teams and that is why they lose all the time.
To bad they cannot realize that KDR is meaningless and that win loss is more important. Teamwork for the win, I will happily take an assist or 12 instead of a kill if it means a win.

Whatever suits you. I dont mind when my teammate gets the kill. As long as i still have enough armor to keep on fighting. I dont like mechs rushing in, getting a kill, then hide somewhere because they are severly damaged wanting to protect their K/D ratio. I still think that teamwork wins the game no matter in solo or group queue. Wiping the enemy mechs on your own is nigh impossible. But hey, there are people running around with their precious death star title...
