But yeah, people being afraid of LRMs "stealing their kill" is one reason, general rookieness is another (they don't know or don't understand how valuable the damage readout is).

So engaged with the enemy that they forget
Or lastly...
Don't want their teammates to steal their kill.
Seems legit.

Most likely it is just inexperienced pilot or ones that have gotten into some really bad habits. These two groups can be Legion and sometimes I slip into one of them.

There are many forum warriors that specifically state they don't target because they don't want others to come in and steal their kill. Yes they know about the paper doll information but they deem that less important than the information warfare battle they fight with their own team. Sad but true.

if somone is lerming your target, hold up on firing, let the missiles soften it for you, then you have room in your heat bar for the coup de grace.

Seems to happen a lot when looking for the last kill and you don't want anyone to steal it from you...especially lecherous LRM boats.

Um, that is the most dumb thing I've ever heard.
I mean, yes Radar Derp can inform you, but technically it isn't actually the most obvious or apparent. I mean, if you're being LRMed to death, and you get into cover, you essentially get an extra audio cue saying "you're not being spotted by the LRMer" anymore.
Still, I think most of what's happening is generally due to having no tutorial, but more importantly not seeing "the value" of just targeting players. Why put in more effort into hitting something when you can finish them smartly?
It's Lostech honestly.
Anyone who honestly believes that they should do this to deny an LRM boat kill are terrible players. Enemies dying quicker is better than you dying quicker. LRMs "keeping people busy" as much they are terribad weapons is better than you taking a full uncontested alpha from your targets.
It's mindboggling at the very least.

Then we have a crapton of new players.
I notice it most often when spectating a losing game. If I'm dead and we're winning people are usually locking. Wonder if there's some correlation...

Can't say I disagree with that; the holy "R" button is second nature to me, as 'E' and 'R' have been in MW2/3/4.
