Can anyone tell me the point of the unit coffers? Seems to me the only purpose they serve is to pay the breaking contract penalty. I would hope they would have more use than that.

That's all the do.
I wish they'd at least gain interest. I put 120 million c-bills in mine more than a year ago and all its done is collect dust.

Well I was hoping I could at least transfer money from coffers to new players to help them, or maybe something like that. Or some other use for the coffers than to be basically useless so long as you fulfil your contract time

They have plans for coffers to be used to purchase dropships & other forms of support for your unit, as well as purchase additional turrets / replenish destroyed turrets to defend a planet that your unit controls. ie. the coffers will be of great importance when holding a planet, and those whose coffers are larger will hold planets for longer, thus aiding the progress of their faction. Likewise, units which control a large amount of planets will need to pay a lot of C-bills to fortify each one of those planets. If large superunits don't pay up to fortify all their planets, they may end up losing a lot of planets quicker since there are very few defensive turrets, and will be an overall detriment to their faction.
Until then, there's not really any use for coffers other than paying the penalty to break contract.
