How does one join a unit. I see an option to make a new one but I have no idea how to join.

You have to be invited. You can find out who the leader is of the unit you wish to join and ask about recruitment.

I think you will find most unit and communities will require you to use TS, as it is a means of communication which is a core aspect of being a member of a unit vs being a PUG. It is not a big program or hard to set up. Otherwise I wish you luck in your hunt.
