Oh, I intend to.

I've played competitively in the past. (way back, in stuff like Street Fighter II tournaments) And really, I see no appeal to it anymore. I play to relax, and decompress from the day.

One reason my play has tapered off (aside from a little bit of staleness, but first 2 years playing.....20,000+ drops. This Year? 4000) is that I discovered freediving, which is even better for stress relief.

Bishop, after reading Paul's explanation I feel a lot better about being Tier 5.

The way I read it, Tier 1 is the people the conform to the PGI perscribed playstyle. The further down your are in tiers doesn't equate to less skilled, but less you conform to that style of play. With that, I have no problem being Tier 5 at all, and in fact will celebrate being Tier 5 until they give us the one thing I've wanted since day one..........Solaris VII.

What's your story? 2.67 K/D, only a mere 1,500 mtaches played... do you play exclusively group queue or CW? Do you have a unit?

Never group queue at all. My stats page is pure solo-pugging. I've been playing since open beta, but I just go on very long breaks, as in 6 months at a time. I'll play a lot for about a month or two, then burn out and go on another 6 month break. When CW came out, I played that exclusively from launch til March, then burned out again until now, haha.

I am in a unit, but I don't really like the group queue and CW is pretty dead on the Marik side, so I am sticking to the pug queue again.

I'm just fickle, is all :D

(FWIW, my archived stats are: Wins / Losses 1,409 / 1,278; Kill / Death Ratio 1.70. Additionally, I played a few thousand from beta til stats tracking, whenever that was. I don't remember. I have definitely improved as a player since the stats reset.)

Guys. why should K/D matter?

MM will try to get tier 1 guys vs eachother. same in the other tiers.
Its the same skill level fighting against eachother.
Why should a higher tier player have a higher K/D? they are still fighting on equal grounds.

Best i can think of is that tier 1 has slightly higher because MM compromises if it cant find an equaly skilled player and can only get one from a lower tier.

So, seems silly to compare K/D and PSR

Looking at everyone's replies, while there are some exceptions and variations, it does appear there is a direct correlation between you KDR and your tier level. It appears the more kills you have to the lower deaths you have means the higher the tier you will be placed in. Higher KDR appears to mean higher tier level.

It's kind if funny too because damage dealt has it's own flaws in determining skill too.

You can have a LRM boat that does 900 damage by showering down missiles that spread damage over the entire mech and he gets a piece of a lot of mechs and maybe bags 1 or 2 mechs. At the same time, you could have a mech that does only 300~400 damage who pinpoint strikes enemy units with accuracy taking out 3 or 4 mechs.

Just because damage is done doesn't necessarily mean it is being applied accurately and the most deadly.

there needs to be a lethality metric for players. damage per kill would be a good metric where lower numbers are better. of course that only really works for solo kills. for killing blow/assists/most damgage/component distruction the math would get more complicated. you might contribute a lot to a kill and not get it, and so a kill metric would do nothing for you. id like a system where you get scored by what you do rather than what you can steal.

you would need to do some kind of fractional kill score to really get things done. perhaps in % of full damage done to handle assists and most damage. you might get a third of a kill with no gain other than the damage put in, no matter if you opened up the ct for somone else or just scattered damage everywhere. for component destruction you not only get the % damage you put in but the % of damage resulting from the loss of the section. so the percentage of structure and armor removed from the mech as a result of your action. if you shoot off a side torso you should also get counted for the arm as well. this is just to determine kill fraction of course. fractional kills get summed up with actual kills. and then damage over kills gives you your metric (though kills over damage times some factor would work better being a positive scale). leathality would be computed on a per target basis and averaged for all targets engaged (and destroyed, no points for live targets) in the match.

rather than factoring the metric right into the score, i would probibly just give out a lethality bonus at the end of a match instead since kills and damage should both reward points since efficiency doesn't mean anything without results.

I wouldn't put too much stock into your stats page, it is not accurate.

One example from my own stats; The Deaths Knell - 15 matches -15 kills - 19 deaths LMAO, go figure.

The main stats page is accurate though. Check it after a match and see the change.

**edit**
and to go along with the thread.

-Tier 2
-2.9kdr
-Just under 5000 matches played
-1.15 win loss ratio.

looks like win/loss ratio is the determining factor for each players tier. I hope with information warfare getting an overhaul, the Pilot skill rating will get adjusted to reflect pilots playing to their roles and not just pew pewing all over the place.

Matches played is definitely the biggest factor:

950/903 1.05 W/L since reset
1.03 KDR

Tier 4, about halfway

100% solo queue, I also play exclusively mechs I'm leveling, once I master one, I drop it forever. I bought ~100 mechbays with my founders MC and a few packs since then and am still working on filling them.
