Trying to set up 2 weapon groups. 1 for the lasers on the right side of the mech. 1 for lasers on the left side. They are all the same typing and as far as I can tell there is no way to know where each one is actually located on the mech so when I enter the game and fire off group 1 its a random collection of lasers from both sides of the mech. I can manually adjust this in game but it doesnt save the grouping for later matches....is it really just a guessing game until you get it right or am I missing something?

No, you're not missing anything. Weird that its not saving your groups after you change them in game though.

I haven't actually used the weapon group tab since I'm so used to setting it in game. Is it possible that it saves what you do in that tab and reverts it back to that after the match if you made changes during it?

I use both and haven't had any issues.

Aways save loadout - then adjust/save weapons - they save loadout again. Take a little extra time, but I usually don't put modules on until the very end of this process.

Set up chain fire or R/L adjustments in match.

I always stay until the end of the match as well - that might make a difference in the saving system.

Left side weapons are usually listed before right side weapons.

Such that on many mechs the list would look like this:
O Left arm laser
Right arm cannon

+ Left torso laser
Right torso laser
Center torso missile

There are, of course, some exceptions (the arm lasers on the Mad Dog come to mind). Worst case scenario, just take the mech into the Testing Ground and set your weapon groups there. If your client isn't saving weapon groups from match to match something is very wrong. Changes to your weapon groups should carry over, especially if you activate chainfire (you can't set chainfire in the mechlab at all).

Usually the top weapons are on one side and the bottom are on the other. So if you have 5 medium laser and only 2 are on one side they will be the top 2 weapons on the list, bottom 3 is the other side.

It should be saving adjustments you make in game though.

Really? It always has for me and I always adjust my weapon groups in-game rather than in the mechlab for the very reason you bring up here.

from my experience what you set as group one the game tries to set as the Left side and group 2 as the Right side
... I'm at work now but that's how I recall it worked

weapons on the left side come up first. so if you have 6 lasers, 3 each arm. the first 3 are left and the last 3 are right. torso works the same.

i kind of wish the weapon group screen got an update, showing which component they are in, it would also be nice if there was a way to set the chain fire mode for the group.

The Mad Dog, I have found is an exception to this. The arm lasers seem to alternate between left and right in the weapons list. No idea why.

weird. all the more reason for some weapon grouping screen improvements.

I recall the first time I took one of my Mad Dogs into a match. Set up my weapon groups in the mechlab, got into a live match, made sure I was clear of everyone, fired my left arm group as a little bit of familiarization fire, and got 1 laser from each arm going off... I was like, WTF? Posted Image

There's not necessarily any logic to order of the weapons in regards to L/R. Equip 12 or 14 lasers on a Nova, and you'll get some strange patterns. Maybe top 4 are left, next 4 are right, then 1 left, 1 right, etc. It requires some experimentation.

But on most mechs, it does organize weapon types into L/R.

It's a pity we still have to test it in training grounds or set it up in the match. On a mech like the Nova, it takes a bit of time to get it right.
