Probably you are right. Play some more and make up your mind. Have a look at IS Mech qirks in the mechlab and pay attention how the Mechs and weapons behave in combat, then make your decision.

Think I will stick to that. It is just overwhelming, how many different packs for the two factions exist and to be honest, that doesn't make it any simpler for new players like me. Thanks again for your advice (to the others of course too).

I will gather some more knowledge with playing the trials before deciding if and what to buy (ingame as well as regarding any packs or the like).

See you all on the battlefield ;)

Okay, so CW. It's considered 'end game'. In it you get to drop in four different mechs, all of which hafta be of your faction (Inner Sphere, or Clan).

Out side of that, you can bring whatever the heck you want. I've dropped IS mech loaded with nuthin but flamers plenty o matches. Nothin' your teammates can do about it.

Ok.....slowly my head is spinning. I looked up the Crab-Package, it is $40 so same price as the steam pack with these two heavies. As far as I can tell it consists of 6 mechs, 3 med and 3 light. So that would of course be cheaper, but "nail" me on the IS side and consists of no heavy mechs, correct ?

Ok, I think I will have to play some more with the trial mechs to figure out what I want Posted Image

I wasn't talking about buying a pack for real money (unless you wanted to). I was just suggesting you buy a Crab or two to learn off of with in game C-bills, which I presumed would be after you earned enough C-bills using the Trial mechs.

Sorry about the miscommunication there.

But anyway, for the amount of mechs you get, the Crab package isn't a bad deal. If you wish to throw your faction contract with an IS house from time to time (or permanently, up to you), they would come in handy for CW. Otherwise, you can always use any mech you want in Quickplay, no matter your faction loyalty.

Heavies are nice, but medium mechs can do very well too. I perform better in my Crabs than I do my heavy mechs on average. Of course, that is me and I'm not you.

It would probably be wise to continue playing with the trial mechs to see what you enjoy using. Once you get more experience, you should be able to come up with a better idea of what you like to play.

PS: As someone else stated, you can earn free mechbays in Faction Warfare (commonly called Community Warfare, or FW or CW for short) by earning rank 2 in a faction. So, for now, I'd only select 7-14 day contracts with a house/clan and earn the mechbay. Then, eventually find a clan/house to settle into to continue earning more loyalty points with that faction. The extra mech bays means you can own more mechs in game (that aren't bought in a package).

WARNING: The special mechs in a package can not be sold. But fear not! They come with their own mechbays! Any regular mechs in a mech pack (such as the non-resistence mechs in, for example, the Crab package could be sold, and still come with their own Mechbay).

Not that an all flamer build is necessarily recommended... (although flamers aren't a bad weapon if you know how to use it well.)

Yeah, took me a bit to get the hang of em, but two sets of two flamers, both chain fired? That right there is nearly heat neutral and a great distraction/heat builder. Then of course you prolly want ballistics or something low heat since your not exactly cooling yourself off.

Still trash for damage though.

just in case you did not realize if you buy the performance pack you get the TBR-C(S), that counts as the same variant as the TBR-C for XP purposes, so make sure you do not get the C as one of your other Timber Wolves

by now this is a bir redundent as you have made your decision but the EBJ does have some advantages over the TBR, it has a lower profile from front, rear or side, it is significantly shorter, the high mounted hardpoints mean you can peak over hills and shoot with the vast majority of the Mech still in cover, the Timby has to expose its whole torso to do that. and the EBJ has an extra ton available for weapons assuming both Mechs have max armor and the TBR is not using any jumpjets

Thanks, very important to know!
Your comment is not redundant, as I just took a step back to further gather knowledge. So the decision on what to buy only got pushed a bit back for the moment, but will be topic again soon for me.
The pricing scheme of PGI is very confusing....

the reason some variants are more expensive than others is the equipment it comes with, e.g. the Cicada CDA-3M Battlemech costs more than twice as much as the CDA-2A because the 3m comes with an XL 320 engine and Double Heat Sinks, to put those upgrades on the 2A would end up costing almost 3 million more than the initial price of the 3M

there are 4 ways to get a Mech,
Cbills, the earned ingame currency, the vast majority of variants are available for cbills, they are the same Mech as the special variants with a letter in brackets surfix like (C) (F) (L) (C) ® (P) (S) except with earnings boost or the "special" variant camo which some of those come with and do not have the optimized loadouts of the (C) or (S) Mechs, cbills can only be spent ingame in the store or Mechlab.

you can get Mechs with MC, which is a purchasable currency, you can also earn limited quantities of it, but it will take a long time to accumulate enough to buy a Mech without purchasing MC. all Mechs (except current preorder packs and the preorder pack special variants) can be purchased for MC, the Hero Mechs are available for MC but not cbills, the best value MC purchases are Mechbays and Mastery Bundles, MC can only be spent in the ingame store or Mechlab,
as well as Mechs MC can be used to buy paints, camo paterns and cockpit items

you can buy a pack from the gift store https://mwomercs.com/store/gifts or the page for the current and previous preorder packs https://mwomercs.com/store , note some packs (currently Warhammer, Rifleman and Archer) are not yet in game, always theck the FAQ for release dates to make sure know when they will be available.
a preorder pack will be injected into your account on release or if it is already released within an hour of your payment clearing,
if you buy something from the gift store, when your payment clears, you will be emailed a code which you redeem here: https://mwomercs.com/profile/redeem you then receive the pack contents, usualy within 15 minutes.

the final option is to purchase through steam, I have never done this so cannot tell you the exact procedure.

That makes it a bit clearer, thanks for your effort.
Just one question I am currently curious about but maybe I just didn't find the correct place to look:

Why is it, there is apparently no buyable hero variant of the Ebon Jaguar except the 90$ clan pack or buying it a la carte from the clanpack for 55$ ? It seems nearly every other mech currently in trial rotation can be bought seperately or at least for less money. Is it because it is newer than e.g. the Timberwolf?

there are no Clan hero Mechs at current, but most IS Mechs, I think all except those in the resistance packs, have heroes, the base chassis is available for Cbills but the only way to get a Clan Mech with the Cbill boost is to buy a pack, ether a performance pack from Steam or the (formerly) preorder packs from the store/gift store.

I get the confusion about packs and stuff, there is a lot to juggle there.

So far, you have considered heavies, but you DID mention the StormCrow. A bit cheaper, and I don't think I've ever heard anyone regret owning a StormCrow. Plus, wait times are a bit faster than for heavy matches.

You have weekend event on now that will help with some C-Bills and premium time, play to max C-Bills for a bit.

Sales happen, so sometimes it is best to spend 'just enough' now to get you in a mech of your own- then wait for a sale.

***: Pre-Order Packages, Early Adopter especially, are generally the best deal you will ever see. Except that, of course, they aren't 'instant gratification' as the various things you get take some time to add to account. See this for an example:
https://mwomercs.com/archer

(The base package for $20 is a *lot* of value)

***: Mastery Packs - another very good deal. You get 3 mechs, one a hero, good price. These ALSO go on sale from time to time. Can use your MC in-game to purchase, or can buy in the Gift Store (Game Content tab).
http://mwomercs.com/...eviews-welcome/

CW: I myself own a mix of IS and Clan mechs. When I want to CW, I take a 7-day contract with a faction. You aren't locked into anything. Play IS one week, Clan the next. You get some nice faction achievement bonuses too, and those levels stick even if your contract expires and you play for another faction.

Hope that helps, have fun, let everyone know what mech you want to be in for Christmas! Posted Image
