The CIP-1A Chipmunk was designed as an affordable and effective approach to scouting. With a blazing top speed of 162 km/h, it was the fastest mech of its time, and still holds its own pretty well, even against the likes of the Dasher/Fire Moth. At the time of its release, however, it was mostly passed over in favor of the WSP-1A Wasp, selling only a hundred in its first couple decades, mostly to extremely poor Periphery worlds and mercenaries that needed an extremely cheap scout mech. Its sales began to pick up later, when the advantages of its extreme speed became apparent after a raid on the Irian Technologies refit base on Washburn, where the Chipmunks incredible speed allowed the raiding party to get in and out with what they wanted, a batch of the then new PPCs parts. Out of the 6 Chipmunks, only one was disabled before it could escape. In light of this event, many scouting and special ops units picked up the Chipmunk, and its popularity soared, especially with the introduction of the CIP-1B and CIP-1C. Although it still didn't catch up with the Wasp, over three thousand Chipmunks were sold by the end of the Third Succession War. Chipmunks were manufactured until roughly 3060, ironically outliving its successor, the Squirrel, by over four centuries.

Fluff:
The SQL-1A Squirrel was intended to replace the Chipmunk as the superfast cheap scouting mech. To its credit, it had heavier armour, better jump jets, and weapons, but it wasn't as fast as its predecessor, which led to its downfall. In what was like a reversal of the Chipmunk's release, the Squirrel sold well initially, but it declined rapidly following the release of the LCT-1V Locust in 2499, since the Locust could match its speed, had heavier armour, and had better weaponry. Even the release of the 1B only slowed the Squirrel's decline. Since the Squirrel now had only its jump jets as an advantage, and it fell out of regular use. The mech was discontinued in 2600, as one had not been sold for years, and the last surviving examples were scrapped or destroyed by the end of the Third Succession War. Since Chinook Industries shows no interest in reviving the design, this mech is now considered extinct.

Fluff:
The Aardwolf was designed to find and eliminate enemy scouts before they could return any useful data or retreat. It was named for the terran aardwolf, an insectivorous wolf, based on this role, since the main scout mechs of its time were the WSP-1A Wasp, and the STG-3R Stinger, both mechs named for insects. At the time of the Aardwolf's release it did its job excellently, outrunning and outgunning its prey, but with the arrival of the LCT-1V Locust, it became less reliable due to the Locust outrunning it. As a solution to this, a new up-engined variant, the 2B, was designed and put into production by Chinook Industries. Both variants have remained quite popular as scout hunters, selling over a thousand mechs and remaining in production to this day.

EDIT: Added Squirrel. Added Aardwolf.
NOTE: All these mechs were designed with the construction rules from Battletech Second Edition.
