Most of us have played a LOT of games on Frozen City and yet many teams that start out in B4 still tend to take the worst possible tactical positions on the map. This usually involves the following sequence of events:

  • Assault lance spawns in the valley near B4, team rushes to join them.
  • They head straight towards the city area and bunch up near the hill past the B4-C4 line
  • With everyone bunched up together between buildings and near the hill, there's no room to maneuver or get away from strikes. Meanwhile, the enemy team gathering on the ice shelf pop up from behind hills and buildings to poke with deadly efficiency.
  • Losses for blue team mounts. 1 down, 2 down, 3 down. By the time the 4th mech goes down the game is taking a decidedly southward turn. By the time the 5th mech goes down team collapses and red wins.

So, the key is to not defend but NASCAR right? Well, not necessarily. There is a good defensive position near B4, but it's not where people usually go. Notice that on the map, if you draw an imaginary line between B4 and C4, there is a set of ridges in front of that line:

I've found that it's actually a perfect defensive position to stop and enemy push from B4 area. The reason is that:

  • It provides sufficient room for multiple mechs to maneuver.
  • It provides good cover from all enemy fire coming from past the 4 line.
  • It has sufficient elevation to directly overlook all areas in the city below.
  • There is sufficient cover from LRMS and people sniping from Drop Ship.
  • Mechs pushing that ridge from B4 have to cross a long stretch of open ground with no good cover, making them vulnerable to focus fire.

Heavy mechs can actually set up a good defensive position there to stop a push from B4, then the rest of the team can flank right towards C4. This usually results in a win for Blue.

A -few- close range mechs can still move towards B4 if they like, but only a few and only if they are covered by people from the ridge.

It's actually a fun position to play:

And you can even use the hill to defend from a push from tunnel:

GL HF Mechwarriors! Hope this helps!
