I guess it is due to speed and hit-box size but most MWO Mediums are weaker to damage and have fewer weapon hardpoints than the Light mechs. There are Mediums that are exceptions to this usually due to heavy structure quirks, but generally in MWO the combat effectiveness/toughness order goes, Mediums, Lights, Heavies, and Assaults. Like the Black Jack which is great now, but was pretty fragile before all the current Quirks were added. MWO has too many Mediums that are just weaker than their Light class counterparts.

As speed goes down and hit-box size increases with weight class increases, the armor has to do more work and it just doesn't have that effect in MWO for the Mediums in general. An example would be the Shadow Cat compared to almost any Light mech, but there are many mediums in the same state. It's a flaw that needs to be corrected with buffs I guess since the hit-box and 3d models are already set.

Phase 3 is going to include re-scales of many medium mechs (the Nova is one of them) that will shrink them and thus reduce the size of their hit boxes.

We'll see. Shadow Cat better be smaller than the Nova though, but it's pretty close to the size of the Nova at the moment. Things like that matter, but generally Mediums are too big, yeah. Ice Ferret is about as tall as the Storm Crow.
