I have a hard time understanding why people consider $25-50 a P2W advantage. This is less than the cost of a pair of decent Cleats for a sports team or 1 good tire for a competitive bike race.

Because people don't like P2GetAdvantage on their F2P games. Also, I like that you mentioned cycling!

I think an interesting thing to see will be the difference in the Euro/NA/Oceanic metas, the prevalence of brawl vs ranged vs hybrid decks, and the success of each. Most of the useful data will come from after the first round robin since there is a lot of silliness going on - new teams bringing and doing things that just don't work, established teams bringing silly/fun decks, and the fact that we can't watch all of the matches to get a proper look at what was brought/done. I'm looking forward to the shoutcasts and analyses later on, th matches now are for practice and funsies :3

The KDK-3 is a no-brainer. It's got Dire-level armor and firepower with Warhawk-level mobility. And those high ballistic mounts are absolutely killer. Oh sure, it's not as tanky as an Atlas, but the Atlas is a slow pig that's useless past 300m. In comp play there's little chance you can pull off a Surprise Atlas! ambush.

One thing that's not surprised me is the prevalence of ERPPCs and Gauss. These are "garbage" weapons according to many on this forum, but skilled players can use them to deadly effect.

Try putting gauss or ERPPC on a Stormcrow, Enforcer, Shadowcat, K2, or even quirked mechs like the Panther, Adder, and Vindicator. They are still pretty trash weapons, but when you have a chassis that has high enough mounts and can mount enough of them to make them really hurt, it makes them look better. I still would never use them on any of the chassis I just listed, they make it onto my Timbers and that's about it.

Try the BJ-3, MAD-3R, SMN-D. Once you get into that snapshotting groove it's hard to go back to ERLLs.

You can't really analyze tournament statistics in terms of cash only vs. F2P, because everything on the tournament build is F2P for the players participating. The prevalence of Kodiaks for the assault slot could be an indication of overall balance for that mech, or it could be that teams (including the top teams) are still science-ing the Kodiak as a competitive mech.

It could turn out that the LPL Banshee or Battlemaster ends up being the better choice in the end. Only time will tell.

The problem with this is it really depends on what strat you are trying to pull off, and this is still only telling of a single map.

F2P does not mean you should be competitive at the highest level. If you are not willing to spend time and money to be the best, you can play for fun.

If a game has better options for real money that cannot be gained by F2P players it is by definition "P2W".

MWO dodges this because you can get a trickle of MC from CW+events, meaning only a chassis that's real-money-forever would qualify.

For now i miss the whole point of this thread i think. Paywall? MC-Mechs? Cbill-Mechs? My tournament account has so much MC and cbills i could buy all mechs in the game + camo and more. Its all for free. And I bought some Kodiaks. And I will use them when needed. But i would never buy them for my normal account. So where is the point here? There is no paywall at all!

Our tactic tells me what mechs i should use and "buy" - not my wallet. Its absolutly FTP.

Yea... I know people will swear by their Oxides, but unless you master all the (toplevel) routes, the Jenner-IIC is better to get around because of the JJs.

It's not as clear cut as it has more to do with positioning, dropdeck, and a host of other things (strats obviously) that affect how a match plays out.

There are IS mechs that do stuff better than the Clan equivalent, but it can be totally wrong for a different purpose. The reverse/vice versa can also be true).

JJs are one reason, the kiss of death is the other, though honestly I'm a bit of a fan of the 6 ERML Jenner IIC on this map more so than any other light.

By the way, did anyone use an UrbanMech in the Tourney?

Good job on getting numbers!

I am looking foreward to read from Bishop and Gyrok why these fact do not count and a Wubshee or an MX90 are the dominate assaults that would slaughter the KDK 3 all the time.

Their creativity in neglecting facts does not stop to impress me.

Glad i am not the only one that comes across this.

61 out of 68 assault mechs are KDK-3?

Ha ha ha ha, you can't make that kind of thing up.

I noticed neither one of the names you mentioned have bothered to post any semblance of a response. Going from their endless potato rhetoric in some of the other threads about this exact issue, i find it hilarious and no surprise at all.

Hahahahaha... i'm now imagining a hybrid of the dodo's killing themselves, from the movie Ice age, but dressed like large stompy robots covered with Lurms... cha cha cha cha cha Dead, cha cha cha cha cha Dead

One thing i notice in that Tournament tho, is that "time to kill" went out of the window...it became instagib instead.
Looking wrong corner? Thats it. Most time there is that 2 KDK + 2 WHM-BW "turret" somewhere elevated.
