If selling one for money is not the question (from the event prize), which one would you use and why?

Whichever has better structure quirks.

I prefer the mad dog. 6x LRM 5 with Artemis, 5x ER small lasers. I took out a kodiak 3 solo with one today. Use your lrms like streak srms and keep mobile. It's harder to hit than a catapult and faster and more maneuverable. If you watch your surroundings you can use terrain to keep out of direct fire but still damage the enemy at close range. I admit I prefer clan mechs but the catapult is clunky compared to the mad dog.

That's how I have my Mad Dog set up. Thanks to it's high cockpit you can submarine people very easily and avoid most weapon fire where the Catapult can't really do that.
The Catapult is more durable though.

I own both, neither is a good brawler IMO, but I prefer 4 ASRM6 + 4 SPL Mad Dog with one missile quirked ST, at least you can afford to lose ST and still keep 2/3 of your firepower.

I go with the Mad Dog as well. My favored setup is 6 LRM-5s, 4 ER medium lasers and a TAG. cAP rounds it all out.

It definitely does best at ranges of 200-400 meters, but a little further is practical if you can TAG your target.
