This seems quite harsh, given your unit can't renew a contract until after your current one has expired.
So I guess we shouldn't play for the hour before our contract expires (30 minute match plus 30 minute wait time for a match) to ensure you we get dudded on CBills.
I wish we could queue up a new contract ahead of time.

My favourite was picking up a call to arms whilest out of contract, and then having my unit pick up a contract whilest I was dropping in on a Davion/Liao conflict. It was fun being the Jade Falcon with the Novas in an IS brawl.
I think they may've fixed that one.
