***Echoe Five Zero Five to all remaining defense forces...***

Static is all LT Zorivich can hear over his spare shortwave radio he rigged to try to transmit over secured encrypted broadband. He whines up the sylinoid again hoping the additional power might boost the signal. He waited a few minutes and trys again.

***Echoe Company, Drop Star Five, Mech Zero Five. Transmitting in the Vanguard. Does anyone read Me, over?***

Still nothing but white noise in the static of the radio and the sound of the heat warning buzzing from the pilots chair. He checks his laptop battery and connections to see if he setup his equipment right in effort to get help with his malfunctioning Rifleman. As Gabriel fiddles with the antenna he had strung out the port whole window attached to a small weather balloon. He hears a Slight crackle come across the radio.

"Bandwidth, check. Power reading, check. Transceiver, check. Battery life, 50%, check." Calling out to himself frantically in hopes that was a call for being received.

***This Is Echoe 5-0-5, over***

***I say again, this is Echoe 5***

Nothing but static as he let's off the mic. For a few seconds his heart dropped with disappointment. Then, suddenly his radio began to crackle with an assortment of band spikes that can only come from a man made devise. Definitely not normal noise.

***Echoe Five Zero Five here, can you read me, over?***

Then it happens

****Sa***Sev**to**Ec***Fiv**ero**ve**We****you**Ec**o**Fi**0**Fi**Com**Bac**over**

***This is Echoe 505, you're breaking up but I read you over***

With blood rushing through his entire carcus, he estactically reply to whomever is receiving his distress call. The energy it took for the past hour is going to pay off. He didn't have a complete evo-suit as he rushed to get to his meck when the first sights of inbound drop ships littered the sky nearly two days earlier. So he couldn't have spent the time trying to pop his hatch with all the volcanic ashe falling like snow all around the city. He uses a tshirt to cover the open widow to keep the steamy air from inside the cockpit clear of the deadly dust. The lieutenants heart raced as he heard a clear response to his inquiry.

***Mobile Infantry Unit Sa'Voi Seven to Echoe Five Zero Five. We read you, Over***

***Echoe Five Zero Five reading loud and clear***

With a squeel in the scratching of the radio, Peter once again waites with anticipation.

***Lock down that frequency, I don't want to loose him. Sa'Voi Seven to Five-0-Five. Glad someone is still with us. What is your location, over?***

***Sa'Voi 7, I am at grid H9, Apple Cove, 5 clicks east of city port launch, near what's left of the petro farm substation, over***

***We copy Echoe 5, what is the status of your meck, over?***

***RFl-n7 is in lockdown and is unresponsive. Sa'Voi , Overheat indicators active and flashing. A little toasty in here. Hatched jammed but don't have complete flight suit anyways, over***

***Roger that Echo Five. You are in luck, we have a half dead Modul with us, over...***

LT Gabriel overhears the open mic as the infantry commander barks out orders to the chereing command staff behind her. "Designate Lance Commanders location as new Nav Beta, fix current location as Alpha. Contact the rest of Sa'Voi Seven. Give them the news but order them to hold their enthusiasm. Transmit coordinate and set primary frequency to this wavelength asap, Move People, the commander doesn't have all day"". Curious to the nature of the MI Commanders orders for her men. Does she even know he's not a Liam Regular but a House Mercenary? Lt Peter Zorivich has heard that the Mechwarrior and Infantry had different rank and statue within the chain of command. Even a private in a mech has more authority than a Captain or a Major in a combat zone. Maybe it's the field experience with the pilots or the knowledge that we are walking nuclear reactors or perhaps it's the firepower we pocess. I'm not sure, but it gains alot of respect from the rest of the soldiers.

***Sa'Voi 7, what is your complement, over***

***Two Scorcher Teir,One Hardbringer Tank Teir, full star of Mobike and mobile suits. scattered array of support vehicles and a few civilian. Echoe 5.E.T.A. Fifteen minutes, having a hard time with ashe filling out our filters, over***

****Circle your Scorchers around you. Have them reverse intake of the Flamers while setting firing system into dyagnosis mode. This will create a static field strong enough to repell the ashe. What ever you do don't fire the weapons, they go boom, over***

***What I tell ya***, Roger Echoe 5-0-5.*** as he hears the open mic chattering for the next fifteen minutes. He, himself, was relieved to see the rage tag unit drag themselves to his position. The Modul creeps up towards him, turns and backs up lifting it's heavy gantry that is riddled with gaping wholes throughout its superstructure. Covered with trash can liners, the gantry connects and a long moment passes when the meck finally shuts completely down and his hatch release like a pressured can of beer. Cheers erupted all around the Rifleman as men and women scurrying about in Evo units trying to get the machine back into full operation. The Lieutenant was escorted to the main operations of the Modul where the command staff waites with upmost anxiety. He is greeted with salute after salute as if a Feild Marshall from The Great House itself was there for an inspection. The kind and lovely staff Sargent showed him to a small stateroom where they had laud out a clean flight suit and provisions to clean up. "The Commander would be able to see you once you have freshened up and has prepared a meal with her staff to debrief." She salutes then turn hustling down the hall ways .

":Just think," the little voice in his head explained demeaningly, "You was standing in front of a court Marshall little more than 48 hours ago and now these people are treating you as if you won the world cup."

******Flashes back Forty eight hours earlier ******

***The CourtMarshall of Captain Peter Gabriel van Zorivich***

The tribunal was set in one of the Old Antique courtrooms depicting the classic late Nineteenth Century Southern Postbellum Era of the North Contenental County of The United States of America. Carved wood banisters, pues and benches filled a majority of this high ceiling white walled room with pictures of former J.A.G Officers lay silenced and still along the walls. There, a lone grey marble podium stands before a two Teir Chorus pulpit where the Administrators sit in for the proceedings. It's late in the day and nearly all other cases have been heard over, judged or sentenced except for Captain Zorivich. A host of Admirals, Generals and Colonels ornamently arranged across the top while Lieutenants Colonels and lesser ranks scattered about the bottom. Guess they had to keep this one for last. Standing before this Jesters Arena of bullshyte, bribery and blasphemy is a shackled Prison Dressed Uniform middle-aged captain of the Cappellan Confederation Independent Ranger Corp, a Mechwarrior Mercenary House Liao, which is still under scrutiny of military authority. But this is no ordinary CourtMarshall as it plays out in the Puppet Theater.

"Last case on the Docket today. Closed Proceedings in the CourtMarshall of Captain Peter Gabriel van Zorivich and the incident involving the House Karitia Envoy which occurred October 16 earlier this Galactic Standard Year. As to the delicate nature of this, we must have upmost compliance and diligent to keep the situation that took place secret and to administer a ruling that will not Kindle any hostelities or retaliation. We don't need an interstellar incident over personal matters." The Admirals words revirberates throughout the room as the the participants begin to converse with eachother with mixed opinions being scrambled about.

"ORDER, ORDER, "" screams out the Chief Justice angrily, Order, Admirals please, Admiral Bates please continue."

The Aged officer leans foward, coughs, and with a cracked voice advocates the sentence. "Captain, you are here by reduced by one rank to that of second lieutenant for no more than six months then be reinstated for as long as no other occurrnces come up,,"clears his throat again and sips a but of water,"Your will take a half pay cut for the duration, not as you need it anyways with your personal holdings nit withstanding. And since you own your mech, we can only restrict excessive ammo use and maintenance of said mech with come out of your remaining pay... .."

"SIr", the accused demandingly beckons.

"Silence, you will let the Admiral finish, " a Vice Admiral scorns from the right corner.

"Under Order number €392.4, all military tribunal ls must adheard to the Judicial Code of Conduct. €348.7-5 any trial against an accused shall be given Due Process and given advocates for defense. As a Free World birth citizen. €Article Five, section Two, paragraph."Anyone birthed on a Free World outside the Coppellan Confederation in service to the House Liao shall be given reprieve from non capital offence and returned to said home world or Faction liason with due haste as noted under the Interstellar Commerce Claus 3099 and Ammendment to the House Liao constitutional decree 3119. Any of these are civil rights violation CourtMarshallable themselves. I've been in the brig fir two weeks without the nature of my incarceration nor given proper documentation as to the Goulag Proceedings. This is a mockery of the judicial system and the code of conduct befitting military justice. I demand my rights" Zorivich brutish and Sturn giving the jester court a forceful stare.

"Son, calm down please. I'll have to explain this off the record. Teletype please stop recoding, put the cover on the machine and lock it. Major Hillar, please retain the keys to the teletype.""Admiral Bates orders are processed with great haste and promptly the Major steps forward.

"Since we are going off the record, I'd like to make a few adresses if I may? "Exclaimed Gabriel towards the tribunal. The Admirals nod as the teletype is being secured. "General Wingate, how's Linda? Last I'd heard she was going to Apex Medical."

"She's fine Peter, still recovering from the cancers but it's in regression. Thanks for asking, I'll mention you inquired about her."

"Colonel Leeann Avanti, have seen you and your daughters at the point this year. We are holding a special this coming month. You should join us. David should be able to join to, your husband play a mean game of cards."

"I'm being called Grandma Avanti now. NO time for vacations. But the girls might be up for a while. "

"Still a good weekend might help you relax, it a be on me if just for two days, " he turns to the Vice Admiral."The twins haven't redeemed the passes send to them for winning the Auderon, those passes are all inclusive plus one."

The bidder officer, smirked"I'll see if they are available to go and enjoy a reprieve. But me and Harald will not be joining them. Have off world work to do,"

He turns his attention to Admiral Bates who was on deep discussion with a few administrative officials and their assistances. "I see Margaret still ties your ties for you. Still making her Gumbo slight bit salty?" Still a dressing the officers he turns only for a brief glance "Yes", he repliedwithout disrupting the speakers, "fine ,fine, but we must make it perfectly clear and cover the rest later. Uh umm." Bates concluded as The Major had finished with the teletype and with keys in hand returned to his seat. "Peter, son, we do regret having you stand here before us today and that you had to waite this long to be seen here before this disciplinary commission. We all here have grievances on to the nature of these summary judgments as they are presented with political biases at which demean the integrity of the military justice and moral code system. The Kuritian Ambassadors and their Envoy are threatening more that just diplomatic injunctions but hostel incursions with do prejudice. We had to make this the last action of this Administration Tribunal as it shall be easier to dismiss later on with the next session a year from now offworld. Captain we do truly apologize and ask that you play along to save face.." The Admiral speaking with candid tones as it can be seen that he is unconformable.

"Admiral, so you are saying I am here to be the sacrificial goat on behalf of political jestering and foolary. And to commit career genocide to save face over an Ambassador's daughter," Gabriel professionally concerned voice enquirys."and what does my Comstar accounts has to do with the jestering and my personal affairs l?"

"That wasn't his daughter. ..." grumbly stating Admiral Bates, "but she is the daughter of a Kuritian High Council member."

"Oh!" With a slight kackle, "that is a predicament. Isn't it." Trying from giggling.

"What's so funny, Mr Zorivich ", General Potsdam Burts irratatingly.

"You would have never guessed it as limber she as well as being well preserved. She'sa freak too, whole lot more than the bar maids down at the 'Bue Coconut'."

The gantry court rumbles with surpressed laughter and moaning of discouragement. The Admirals nod as they allow the sneering to continue to subside before bringing the court to order.

"So you understand the importance of the plight that your personal affairs has put apon the military with pressure from the politicians to come to action. Kuritian honor code demand satisfaction yet their political stance keeps her safe from harm. Your situation keeps you from their wrath but not limited to assassinations. Your military pay is separated from your Mercenary and personal investments plus holdings, that is that since your military pay is openly monitored. Anyone peaking in to see your status will see you as being under administration punishment and that your career is so marked even though this is just a political goose. Do you understand what we are asking of you?"

"Yes sir, I do. I am to be altered up for show not only cause I am an offworld born citizen, a mercenart, but also a well established business man that doesn't depend on his commission pay to live on." The captain Professionally speaking. "If I'm going to have to do this I'm going to want something out of it for the trouble. "

With a crossed eyed sneer the Vice Admiral gaunks, "What do you have in mind? It's got to be reasonable or we could just keep you locked up and hidden from existence for a very long time. "

"No need for hostelities Vice Admiral, son what is it you want." The tired Bates pleads.

Zorivich explained calmly, "There is an Orphanage in Gatecity Port River. Named Atrium River Orphanage and Half way house. They are in need of a bigger facility. Of you could see that it's taken care of I'd appreciate it. Also, close by is a warehouse full of shelf rotation mre's and platoon trays. It wouldn't hurt to have it donated to them..."

The Admirals reply was that of approval when he asked, "is there anything else?"

"Yes Sur," affirmingly Peter states, "could you please have a few company doctors give the children a check up. They don't get much medical care on that side of the world."

"These are reasonable request and under thus unique cercumstance, we'd oh you a favor or two for your cooperation. Now we do have your upmost cooperation now, correct? " gleeringly as the Admiral sighs its getting late. "If so let's get back to brass tacts, Major Hillar, please return the keys so we can finish this."

"Yes sir, we have an accord." As Peter stands by as the Major rush to the teletype and in due haste the Jestering recomments.

"Captain Peter Gabriel van Zorivich. Your are to be reduced in rank to Second Lieutenant with half pay for no less than six months. You are relieved of commanding your company star but retains your mech and Lance comand. Major Washe will be your star commander for the duration of this punishment. You are not to discuss what was presented here today. Bailor, escort the Lieutenantto processing so his personal effects ar returned plus have him changed into new uniform with new rank. I now pronounced this administration court ajurned. We will see you in six months." With three gavel hits the Admiral completes the Court Marshall hearings and the room begins to vacate with the Lieutenant being rushed to the quarter masters wing so he can go about his way. Everything was already laid out ready for his appointment. One last check and out the door he goes with a Corporal anxiously waiting buy two mobikes as one is on a trailer.

"I see it didn't go to we'll in there sir," the Corporal trying nit to be too candied."Reduction of rank gotta sting abit. I was ordered to bring you your bike and to escort you back to barracks."

"Good to set you too, Cp Emerson," sarcastically Peter squaks,"how's your mom?"

"Sorry Sir, I didn't mean any offence, but my mom is doing well thank you for asking. "

As they start to get on their three wheeled mobikes, a flash of light cascades across the sky. The the buildings and ground around the arupts with fury and benevolence of fire and explosion as streaks of smoke crashes to earth creating mayhem and destruction everywhere. Sirens and alarms ringout over the base. When Peter looked up he focused in on a horrid sight as balls of flames scattered throughout the sky. He says only two words seeing inbound drop ships piercing the clouds.

***The Invasion Begins ***

The newly demoted Second Lieutenant Peter Gabriel van Zorivich was looking down at his comtablet reviewing several revenue offers still waiting for his response though he has been off Com for several weeks. One such offer was revolving around his holdings in that sector even the holdings on world's held by other houses near that sector. A little bit less than than the intended price but still not a bad offer. Then the earth began to erupt with fury as chaos and destruction reign havoc on the unexpected planet. The sky was a glow with yellow and orange streaks penetrating the overcast. Only one thing makes that firelight, Imperial Class Dropships. The lieutenant hits the confirmation to confirm all of the offers and orders the Corporal escort to get to his hanger and proceed to the take defense position. He then jumps on his own Mobike butting his helmet then off he goes with the same vigor the Corporal had.
He calls Liam Forces Central Command.

“This is Lieutenant Peter Gabriel van Zorivich reporting in, confirm planetfall.”

“Captain Frostburn here, thank you for contacting us, confirm Angels have made planetfall, stonehammers have been heard over entire planet. Air defense down, orbital guns offline. Datalink still secured. Have all meck install the software. The sky is falling, repeat the sky is falling. Report to sitrep onsight ,over and out”

“Roger that Central”, he hastely calls his hanger. “Hanger 12, this is Lieutenant Zorivich. ECHOE FIVE ZERO FIVE HERE, heat it all up. We have inbound hostel forces. Load all mechs with ‘Bugout ‘ boxes and have 3 liters of water added to each cockpit. Need someone else go to my stateroom below and access the safe. Code Blue Evac engaged. the code for safe is Delta 4 Echo 5-01 star. Get the brown case inside and take it to my mech, lock it down in designated panel. Also grab field cases from locker 22 : 6 and put one in each mech and take the rest to evac-transport. Once all mech out of the hanger proceed to code blue formation and prepare for further details. Over”

“Hanger 12 here, code blue hasn't been issued by Central Command. The cases are being secured by the time you get here and there are also going to have your brown case inside the mech. Any word from star commander? Over”

“no word yet hanger 12,” he puts them on hold while dialing in his new commander, Major Washe.”Major, this is Lieutenant Zorivich, I got hanger 12 in full, eta five minutes, stonehammers have been heard, Angels have made planetfall, sitrep unresponsive. Over”

“Good job Lieutenant, sorry about the spanking. I was called in last minute for your star. Take care of the men. I'm just a simple replacement, you know your job, I'll deal with the politics, over”

Just then his Mobike began to jitter as the surrounding vehicles began to crash uncontrollably down the highway and the buildings began to shake.

“Hold on Peter, Central Command Major Washe here, has the eggs been laid, over”

“Captain Frostburn here Sir, negative sir the stonehammers sir have triggered a sizmic event sir, will keep you posted sir, over”

“That's all we need, ok LT Zorivich we have a hot spring event. You have been here before. Treat it like Prova nine. Let's get the job done, over”

“Thank you, Major,” clears throat and calls out :Hanger 12. Status please. I'm at the gate now. See you soon over "

“Hanger 12 online and moving”
“Hanger 13 online and moving”
“Hanger 09 online and moving”
“Hanger 11 online but silent”
“Hanger 03 online and moving”

“Hanger 12 to Echoe Command”
“Go ahead Hanger 12 “
“Hanger 10 is unresponsive and is belchingsmoke over "
Just then hanger 10 erupts with a metal twisted blast from within
“Hanger 12 to Echoe Command, hanger 10 is down I repeat hanger 10 is down “

As the mic drops hanger 12 in full swing. The lieutenant locks up his mobike for evac. Starts to climb the gantry stairs to his mech and take the time to change into his flight suit. “make sure everyone grabs some food and drink before leaving the hanger, proceed to code blue formation”

As he entered the mech, the building began to shake and he realized that something else was going on.

“-Another tremor” ask the Sargent

“nope, to longated, that my friend is a hard fall and local.”

A Slight pause

“What is it Sargent you looked puzzled”

“Why did you have me retrieve the brown case from your safe? Is it important? "

Laughingly he jest, " That's ten thousand mechcredits, I think I might have a need for it out there. Besides, I going to enjoy the look on the enemy pilots crying face when he sees all this cash go up in smoke if he kills me that is, lol”

With a pale look on the techs face as the mechs hatch closes and the mechwarrior’s metal monster begins it's check list.

***Reactors online ** Weapons online *** Sensors online * * All systems nominal **

" This is Echoe 505 stepping up am going hot and on standby”
“Echo 506 online check left”
“Echo 507 online check right”
“Echo 508 online and request point”
“Granted 508,”

“Echoe Command Beta online and active. Request Hanger 12 go dark once cleared, over “

“Echo 5-01 online and accounted for, Echo delta bring to bare. Echo Five has the call. Over”

“Bravo 4-0-9 here, Master Sargent Humphreys reporting, Echo 5-01, our officers have not reported in fir All Call, not cleared for Command Comms, sir. Eight of us here and ready but no command status, over”

“Echo Five Zero Five take care of this. Over "

“Lieutenant Humphreys, assume command under article five of House Liao Rules of Engagement. Designate your gunny to Lance comand and your second. Fall behind Echo Five fir support and spotters when we move, over “

“But I'm just a Master Sargent “

“I didn't studder LT, under authority of Major Washe, and Second Lieutenant Zorivich you are here now promoted to lieutenant for this entanglement. You may retain the ranks afterwards only in regards to your performance of character. Your officers are on report and is classified as awol. Regulations in a time of war allows me to allocate resources as needed. Make sure your hanger goes cold and any leftover put in transit, Congrats and get moving, over”

“Yes Sir, Thank You Sir, you heard the man, move people.”

“ Echoe Command to Echoe Five Zero Five, we heard that. Kinda injoyed that didn't you, 5-0-Five. You have us laughing here, save being a comedian fir the talent show, okay. “

“Echoe Command, Liam Central, situation update, Second hard fall detected, 11 clicks east of base. Capital's online warnings. Infantry Scouts report First hard fall asleep, the eggs aren't hatching. Negative hatching. Third hard fall detected, fourth hard fall detected, fifth hard fall waite. Hard fall five is a splash repeat dropship destroyed, hard fall one hatching, all local hard falls hatching, even in mid air two more hard falls destroyed but mechs are free fall. Echo Five engage hard fall one, “

As the comand confirm was given Echoe Star Five proceed to the combat designated coordinate. Accompanied by two Sa’Voi infantry units to engage separate targets.

“Alpha take the lead, Delta fall back and engage at range, beta we’ll go downtown, copy?, Bravo Four, take up the rear, watch your heads. we don't know who we are fighting against so watch your backs. “

So our Mechwarrior’s are off to engage forces unknown. Anxious about who or what is about to take place as the battle has yet to begin.

***The Long Night of Fire***

As the Warriors of metal and steel starts their short walk into either fate or glory, the region is set a foot as most civilians run away from the battle and those who runs towards it. As reports start coming in across the continent, masses of non combatants requesting to help. Home field advantage might play a role yet the upcoming tormoil might give them a second thought. Groves of vehicles of those who seek refuge from war where there is no real escape as this is a full range planet invasion. The uninvited guests of hell and might walks with trembling iron beast. They will be spared no mercy as reservation that none will given. A light of humor comes across a bit shirt but it breaks the tension building as the Enemy Dropship begins to deploy it cargo of Wrath and Despair.

***Bernie’s Pizza, who can I help you?***

***I would like a delivery, one medium pizza, pepperoni, ham, salami and extra cheese, a 2 liter cola and a cheese cake no toppers.***

***You do know there is an invasion going on right?***

***I saw you open and said what the hell, I haven't ate yet***

***okay, what ever floats your boat, that will be $1450 C-Bills if you don't mid the up charge***

***Round it up to 2k, it's going to be a rough day.***

****thank you sir, where are you located.***

***1250, Soulja Blvd, fourth floor, just look out your window, you'll see my Rifleman off to the left***

***you are wanting me to deliver to a Battlemech? ***

***yup, make that times five. Some of the infantry here is signaling they want pizza, make two mega cheese with diet cola. Add it to mine with the scaled upcharge, pizza us a risky business these days, haha***

***That it is, ha ha ha, how would you like to pay***

***Transferring via Datalink now***

***Payment received see you in twenty minutes.***

It was not just a few moments later after he hung up the phone when the company commander called.

“Ordering pizza on a combat zone? Now I've heard everything. Echo Five oh Five. ”

Sarcastically he replied, “Whaaat, I'm hungry. I'll save you a slice if you like or should I have ordered an extra salad, sir”

“Echo 501, This is Central, AWac in Air use sparingly, satellite unreliable. we have a Cascadia Class Hydo Destroyer online, USS Black Dollia, their gravity drive in being repaired but we can allocate resources to assist, half the fleet stoned to death other half cracked atmosphere.over btw Echo 505, real funny, you have us crying here.”

“Echo 501 to 505, we have access to capital class Longtoms, Arrows, and Clusters. Call them out as you see them, over. “

“Roger that 501, Sa’Voi Two Niner, are you on point, over “

“Affirmative 505, one splash down 15 clicks north east of base counting seven survived mechs grid P8. Two are gimpy, they are not on the move. over,”

“Sa’Voi one five, reporting, hard fall one is patrolling Landing Zone. Sweep and clear, scouts pull back. Out of line sight for base turrets. Echo lead, we see Six Atlas, Two Stalker, Three Fancy Hunchback(llc), and a cute Uller (Adder), where'd they come from, echo lead we have a swarm coming in from one click west of hard fall one moving to intercept. Over”

“do you have a Friend or Foe acknowledgement, over”

Just then he hears a knock on his canopy which startled him. It was an infantryman with his pizza order and ice cold drink.

“heres your pie lieutenant, names Mikey thanks for sharing, some of the civilian volunteers said that there might be some spooks showing up, there was a few Talon class Dropships last night. Off grid We are hearing alot of chatter from other units the same. Bye the way. They delivery driver thanks you for the tip “

“thanks Mikey” as he grabs his food,”Echo Five Oh One come in,”

“Go ahead Oh five,”

“We have spooks in the wire, Tom And Jerry Liam Forces,”

He begins to scarf down his hot cheesy meat pizza without choking. Pop the soda and with a few gulps, sets it down and pings his mech sensors to active long range then cut them off again.”

“Sa’Voi 15, here, what ever you did git there attention, they're forming up.”

“ Sa’Voi 29, reporting, splash zone mechs making a V line to p8. E.t.a six tics.”

“Echo 505, to the Black Dollia, come in,”

“Captain Scolia here Five oh five, status green, gravity drive still offline but can lift off in a few tics, over”

“Captain, I need surpression fire of clusters around hardfall two, sitrep coordinate, Sa’Voi 29 has six mecks on move, tag and bag, I want a full Longtom strike of P8, coordinate Sa’Voi 15 for effects, once you start firing make fir hard orbit. Watch out for bubblers, over”

“Standing bye for firing order, echo five. “

He watches as the Awac supported grid map comes down with a bad case of the chicken pox. Identify Friend or Foe (IFF) has gone mad. Using infantry tag points he gives the order “FIRE” As the night twilight beckons for blood and melted metal. His meck raddels and shakes from inbound ordnance and sizmic tremors where you could not tell the difference. He heard Thunder Crack which indicates the Destroyers main drive was able to engage. Not knowing if he could be heard, he calls out to thank them for the assistance. During the artillery stroke ,Hardfall One’s Capital weapons came on and started to bombarded blindly the city and base grounds. Injured personal and civil services was evacuated as they got the call to assist. But as the strike ceased and the starship left planet, so did the bombardment of Hardfall One.

“Sa’Voi 15, reporting Grab some cheese we got breakfast, Hardfall one scrambled with toast. Two helmet heads, Two. Stalkers half the swarm and the Uller survived but smokie, someone going to be pissed, the fancy Hunchies are scrapped.

“Sa’Voi 29, reporting, two gimpy Cattapults met up with two IS-Vultures both having left arm swinging. All others crispy, “

“Echoe Command, Liam Forces report Hardfall Two is smoking but not destroyed, there mechs distracted and heading for destroyers last position. Estimated two hours out off grid.”

As the night laid on, scattered fighting broke out as the Enemy mecks made their move on defense forces throughout the region. Heavy loses began to come in especially from ground units caught in the open. Coordenating each mechs encounter with as much as his veterancy could muster. He told Echo Five delta to pull back as the heavies came in. Outranged and outgunned by these mammoth walking buildings of death and Despair, Echo Delta realized the cruelty of war as Echo 5-12 took a full Lance alpha strike with barely scratching his targets left torso. Delta limped away with their tales between there legs bitterly. Sa’Voi 29 indicated that their tracking formation easy heading to engage command in the next battle grid. Echo Alpha had better luck than Delta, maybe it was the fact it was the swarm (locust, stingers and hornet mecks) that was engaged with an Atlas as a support ticket. The Lance took heavy damage but downed three swarmers and disarmed the Atlas, sening it back to moma crying. Then it was Echo Five’s turn. Two Stalker a Uller and stinger wanted to do some shopping at the Gallaria. He told the local infantry it was time to play spider man. They zip lined from tall building and satchel charge the cockpits with sticky bombs. An old raider tactic to preserve the mechs for salvage. A locust sneaks in from behind using its Flamers against the infantry but it was short lived as they returned the favor with 20mm anti-tank rifles and a shoulder fired incinerator missile got its pilot nice and roasted. This pissed off the Stalkers as they began to fire rain of lrm and srm vollies as they started to wonder the streets. LT Zorivich ordered Bravo Four to come around and flank the two stalkers from behind, he advised them to chain gun their movement to hit and evade to flee and regroup but not engage frontal. Uller target of opportunity at best. Once the unit enraged the stalkers Peter steps out laying LBX 5 rounds into the back of first stalker when he got hit by a ppc and was being pinged by machine gun fire. “The Uller spotted, Bravo Four keep the remaining stalker busy for just a minute.” for that's all it took, a minute. He zoomed in on that fast mover and wham hit a gas truck with ballistic rampage causing the little mech to crash uncontrollably into a construction sight as hundreds of tons of steel entangles it. An Atlas peaking over the rise was not unnoticed but as long as it was not engaged it's going to be left alone. The rest of beta came in for the kill and clean up causing moderate damage to the Lance but no loses to mech or life. A few infantry dead a wounded but could have been worse. Reports came in that sizmic activities increasing and the mountain begins to fill the air with soot and debris. Scattered reports that enemy forces falling back regrouping off grid. Hardfall Two is smoking but full active now.
A night of Fury Won, a creepy dark day of silence has yet to come.

***The Long Dark Day Ends by Fire***

As the nights hours begins to bend away you could not tell that it was forcasted to be a sunny day. The mountain by the river city has blocked most of the light of the suns leaving a pale twilight dim and Erie. Most civilians and citizens have already fled their homes towards government bunkers for shelter. What are left is the military presence, looters looking for quick cash, degeneratives who prey apon the stragglers and then there are those whom has no where else to go. A hot day is what the told, it's cooler than expected, much cooler. The penetrating craters left by the Stonehammers fill with blistering steam which glows yellow deep within their pits. Ashe, like snow, falls over the region with tremors keeping the wonderers on their toes. Smoking twist of metal faintly resembling the walking giants that it once was a machine of death. Soldiers and metal Monsters ate called back to their lines to rest if they can get, to eat if they can stomach it, repair or reload if they need it, and pray even if they are not heard. As casualties are light they still a reminder of the grime facts that war takes a piece of humanity piece by piece, body per body. Some are easily recognized others fill out a small bucket with a name written on the lid. That was said the fate of Echo Five One Two who took the blunt force of an assault lance. Death was swift but still a death that even left his mech unrecoverable. Echo Five oh Five turns to look back at the city he defended that night. A few buildings wrecked and some messed up asphalt but in all not a bad run. Each of his mechs under his command caries a platoon of men with each holding the dead or wounded as they travel to the ordered rally point.

“Echo Command to All units, play ball at E2, repeat Ball field at E2, support detail in route. Instructions Relayed to all Star Commanders. Sitrep onsight, hostels have fled Grid, one hostel Egg in nest no hatchlings sighted. Rotation of Patrols. Guards on high alert. Air defense units grounded by volcanic disturbance. Datalink will remain Active. Over and out “

Major Washe received a packet of information on the repair and reloading of his units mechs then issued out directions to the rest of the unit.

“Echo 501 to all of Echo Five, pull up Grid map on hud display. L5 north east corner of Liam Control. There is a sports complex, everyone set point Charlie to regroup. 5-0-Five, this is a plug and play facilities. It has two bays that can run off the reactors of either an assault or heavy, I ask that you plug in first. After debrief I have to report to Liam Central. Bravo Four, goid job last night, report to point Lamda for refit and reasignment to escort duties. Get repairs folks and get some sleep. Over”

With a squeel all pilots confirmed and moved to a large domed garage off the base grid where the local community uses to replace and repair civil units used in construction which is perfect for mech repair and reloading. Beside it was an arena which was converted to a staging point, triage and company Hqs with each VIP box catering to Star Command offices with bunks. Echo Five hooks up mech to power the mechbays then rushed to debriefing with only a motorcycle helmet with wet scarf to keep from breathing in ashe. They had coffe and doughnuts in the ready room as pilots filed thermos and canteens to the fill grabbed a few doughnuts and stood there overthrow recap of the last battle.

“last night was an interesting one,” Major Washe resigh to the House report, “Planet Wide invasion, Stonehammers reduced forces by 60% with heavy casualties and tonnage lost. Two the south, our location, sizmic event triggered, unknown cascade effects eminent. Liam Forces and House Mercenary units engaged high volume of aggressors. Attackers still Unknown. Unusual weapons and tactics from innersphere mechs reported. Active Dropships secure held territory. Climate shift eminent with ashe saturation, 20 degrees off normal. Air assets effected, ground assets effected. Hydo assets popped atmosphere and is regrouping waiting for further details. Good work people. They thought they could just roll over us in a night. “

“Any word on the mech we splattered, sir”

“Preliminary reports from the recovering salvage units are sketchy, I don't want to come to conclusion as of yet on what we are dealing with. Hardfall Two is still there smoke has ceased and we can't even get a person close enough now to scout.”

“What of Nelson, sir, he got wiped hard, his sister is on Styx.”

“His share of thus bounty of the night will still go out to her plus his off world mechs could either be sent to her or sold but his account will be closed” sighing as the Major always hates dealing with losses of men.

“we have three gimpy units, one kia, inoperable Cattapult, lrm seized. Echo Nine. He can hold back just a few with infantry here to coordinate intel radio traffic getting irratic. When his mech is op. Defend Charlie point as I feel we are not done here.”

“Agreed,”with a knock on the door the Major is handed a report. “ok. Salvage report by tonage, we are up 600 tons people, one swarm, 320, 4 atlases, 400, 2 stalkers, 160, 3 humps, 150, star of floaters from hardfall two, look like your Destroyer left a care package to the curious cats, we are being credited for those kills, nice. Oh waite, the splash from the north and two lances of Jenner that appear out of nowhere are also our kills. Bringing us over 2,200 tons. Cost estimate 1030 tons for repair, salvage ,reloading and a kia. That's not bad, let's try keep it to metal not meat. Get some rest I'll see you in six Echo Five. “

It's wasn't more than five and a half hours later when the Major shows back up in a confounded rush. Lieutenant Zorivich was laid back with a bed roll tarped over his window to deter any light to get in. Washe knocked on the mech waking the light sleeper telling him he needs to talk privately as soon as possible. Peter gets up puts his flight suit back over his shoulders, grabs his helmet with scarf and down chain latter he goes following the major to the buildings office where he was going to be debriefed on critical information.

“Okay, what's up Major, you look flushed, is there anything wrong? “

“The salvage Report and preliminary findings on the aggressors came in over at Central Command. It was very interesting to say less. We've been given triple Combat tonage because of its important finding. “

Curious and confused Peter gasped at what he just heard, “Triple weight, was there gold bars?”

“Nope, better, Clan Tech.”

Trying to hold back the anthusiasm, “Clan Tech!”

“yes, the whole lot, weapons, computers, armour, the works. Everything but the design. All mechs was the Innersphere class chassis. But what is odd is that the pilots remains we, say Liam Command, recovered had not clan markings or tattoos. Furthermore, their DNA results are inconclusive too.”

“Have they checked the record fir any other anomilies, Clan genetic rituals are strict and highly coveted in their ranks, this would be a blasphemy to their culture and way of life.”

“General Mayeborn realized that, too. The two light mechs you and the infantry ambushed I sold to Liam Central for a healthy price that I could not refuse plus git big salvage of the rest to boot. “

“What about the region? Is there going to be an offensive to help assist other grids that are occupied?

“No word as of yet, we still have a Dropship with full weapons hot and now assuming those maybe hybrids as well. What is it Peter, you got that look?”

“You said hybrids, get back with Liam Command on a secured line. Have them run those DNA test with the comparison to House Steiner. It's just a hunch.”

“A hunch, that sounds logical since House Steiner clasps in the upper quadrant where the Clans first invaded. I'll see what I can did up but for now I got us a treat. Mine and your mechs are the last to be repaired. Reason for is that no one is to know that the service crews are ordered by Liam Control to refit our mechs with the salvage technology and weapons. Don't want others to get jealous or greedy. Alot of back stabbing can happen in times of war.”

“Energy weapons one don't see an issue with but missiles and ballistics, isn't clan ammo different from innersphere. How would I reload latter.”

“That's the trick, Clan Tech adapts to Innersphere tech ammo with only a performance decrease. Like the old NATO caliber system. It will be good with either type. Now your Ac-5’s are being replaced with clan Lbx5’s which is lighter, holds a little more ammo and longer range, but higher heat and tlit has a spread instead of a single point.”

“I've used LBX before, pretty much walking shotguns, just got to watch fir friendly fire. ER larger lasers will be hotter but extra heatsinks will compensate. Medium lasers not a problem. “

“Then you really going to love this, your TatCom is going to be changed giving you sniper like precision and your going to be trolled for your AMS is lams recovered from wrecked mechs. NO ammo anti missile just heat build might be issue. “

“Heat build? “

“Yes, someone put a ersmall pulse laser on an AMS turret instead of a ballistic depending system. Never seen before tech but they was loaded down with them. Only T-Bolts are uneffected by it. We only have patrolling duty tonight for now while Liam Forces deal with other grids”

“Glorious, so when do we get this done?”

“two hours to finish up the rest of these Yahoos and they said it will take three or so hours to refit. We have roamers from Central in area doing sweeping. Just a few Heavy tanks and scorch”

“Roger, that, anything on the mountain ”

“not of yet other than the weather patterns have changed as the ashe is lowering temperatures here in the lower hemisphere. Sizmic activities noted around a chain down the coastal area. This is got these invaders pulling off coast too. Liam Forces might exploit this tomorrow morning. “

A few short hours later, both the major and the lieutenants mechs was put into both bays while a stripped down and crippled Cattapult powered the machinations pulling damaged armour plating, gearing out arm and leg joints, releasing panels, stripping pods, wrenching anything they could get their hands on. Occasionally washing down the dust with a detergent oil solution. It was an orchestra of clockwork amusing labor to get these Masters of death fully converted to a demigod like state. They run a Final dyagnostic while nano-coating a new camo paint job. They released and walked them out ready for their gladiator to approve.

“You still ain't got a proper evo-suit? “

“They're out Sir, can't get back to hanger 12 to search for one, MP’s locked out all non regular personel. That's why we had been given this repair site.”

“Ok, just watch the exposure to this crap. The stonehammers have left there mark. We are seeing what could be a super volcanic clasp they say,...Is that..I thought the Areotech forces was grounded .”

Just then a rumbling thunder with a whistling harmonic following.

" No, uh Sir…. That's incoming!!!!”

“Start her up, this is just the beginning, signal an all call”

“Liam Central, thus Echo Five oh Five, we have inbound ordnance, Longtoms and Arrows, warning inbound.”

“Affirmative 505, we see it, Hardfall Two is angry, firing blindly, ,waite we have two columns coming in off grid. South Southwest and north north west, indication they are making a move on base. Fast movers, Assault and Heavy formations. Note: fast movers couture to a hundred per.”

“ Echo 501 we have fast moving tanks followed by heavy duty assault groups.”

“The north west defence will engage first.”

Central Command orders all units hot while the main base turrets keeps the aggressors getting in the peremeter. Un able to target the fast movers the enemy mechs stay beyond a hill line. But then from afar ordinance began to hit their marks. “They're Taging the turrets, Liam Guard engage those mechs” the frantic orders of the Base commander rang true”our turrets can't take much of this. All Mercenary units prepare fir action, contract initiated. Standby, “

“This is the Black Dollia, let's see how they like it, FIRE! “

***Incoming Stonehammers***said LT Zorivich’s computer as he watches them lay waste to the distant Dropship.

“Good Luck down there, we see in……..” the Com link dies abruptly.

“Off world communication is down, Comstar being jammed. Warning southern offensive moving towards city. Echo Company protect these four power conduits. We are tied into the city main grid. We have to atleast secure one to keep turrets online. Over”

“You heard the lady, get into your mechs if you haven't already and get stomping, we are out numbered and out gun.” Echo Command disturbing bark of orders rang like bells twitching the ears. The last battle reduced forces by 25%. With no reinforcements they chased glory, victory or death as the night only got darker and the ashe fall thicker.

Peter Zorivich orders all missile runners on the mountain to watch for targeting from allied mechs as line of sight is reduced to 500 meters. Infantry Scouts was told to move silently and swiftly as two substations was located inside the city itself given alot of coverage and mobility. Moments past as each unit prepared for am all out push. The smaller mechs got an advantage as the ashe blended them in with the surroundings. The battle began with only a few fast runners tripping peremeter mines that was meant to cripple the mechs but another area was set with claymores to be used later. The ashe began to subside as the mechs entered the city. Echo 501 tried to get his lance to blind side but traded Atlas to Atlas as 504 took Thunderbolts(arrows) to center mass. 503 got knocked off his feat but took an Orion and Cattapult down. Mangled he was ordered to evade and retreat. Echo 09 cat, and 10 took lrm fire and was left smoldering. Echo 503, 507,508 IFF went silent Mia. They regrouped after the Lieutenant finished off the local fast movers with help of the few tanks in the area.

“Echo 506, what's your status,?”

“506 is Yello down to half ammo.” tiredly responding.” Awesome and a Vindicator scratched from bingo card, damn roaches keeps narcing me.”

“505 is same Yello plus down half ammo,” agitated and angry the lieutenants demeanor getting ruffled.”the football team is whipping us up. I count three on my board and with help of our missing Jenner took two crabs. Have not heard from them as their ammo got low plus our cat was scratched who was with the. 3k tons down and more coming. “

“511, 25% ammo, still green. Popping at range, stalker and a cat. 501 look out!”

Two king Crabs came over the hill with a helmet head following. The major ordered to spread out, causing a mini dust storm. The enemy mech fired furiously but the dust hindered the mark. 506 sneaked behind one of the Crabs lined up his strike, then as he pulled the trigger that would split the crabs back armour slap open and then some, the ground around him gave way as his mech dropped feet first into a lova pocket. Zorivich watched as the escape pod leaped into the air but then out of nowhere a ppc bolt incinerated it. The Atlas had split off the confusion.

“505 , 7 clicks out you see it?

“Yeah, but I don't believe it, “ an enemy drop ship had moved from off grid to take up position where hardfall two was.”this is getting to hot to handle, there artillery will be up by morning. “

“Go find that Atlas…..” just as he finished a Longtoms mark flattened the head of Major Washe’s Battlemaster and the King Crab grabbed it a drug it away.

“Morning my arse, Central this is Echo 505, heavy ordinance active again, over, need reinforcements over”

“Copy on heavy hitters. Reinforcements not available. Base no longer being attacked over. Keep them off those power relays. Will advise.”

“Roger Central, 511 on me, let's go hunting!”

Two scourchers and Hardbringer tanks joined up to help fight in city. The tanks met up with an unfriendly Raven giving it a fair well gift of shrapnel. This brought in the Atlas and his new found buddies. Vultures, the same two from the night before, all shined up and repaired.

“511 let's drag them near that petro farm near the substation. They are the only threat we have right now and the other stations are clear ..”

“I get ya, roast and toast the birdies with the helmet head,”

Weaving on and out of the skyscraper landscape, luring them to the right position taking minor hits and returning critical hits. The two mechs drive the three enemy units where they knew victory was theres. Stepping into sight diverted the enemy gaze onto the Rifleman right beside the substation as the Trebuchet lashes out with laser fire onto the flammable tankerage of of the petro farm bursting into a chain reaction. The Atlas was on process of firing as the concussion wave and heat struck from behind causing his rounds to graze Zorivich then leveling the grid control building creating an EMP surge knocking Peters mech out. The Atlas went critical rupturing it in half throwing the vultures further in the flames around the area. Peter hurried to try to get his mech to restart as the heat was getting hotter. He just got it going as he heard over the Com link a despairing message.

“This is a General Order, retreat. All personel are ordered by Liam Control, Retreat. Report to designate Dropship, we break atmosphere in five.”

“511 get out of here, now I'll make it . Just grab and go.”

“505, goodluck buddy, Sherman out,.”

He watches as his friend is joined up with the 502, and the two lost Jenner 507 & 508. Moments later while his mech was still trapped in a hot spot shutting down his mech trying to cool itself. He sees multiple liftoffs. The last two was civilian Class Drop Shuttles that he could see begin to take hits the exploding causing another Emp that zapped Peter causing him to pass out. It was a few hours it seemed that he awoke. His mech was still hot but the flames of petro had ceased while the ashe had started to snow down again. The street light Erie glow with the ashe gloomed ever so gentile. Except fir the heat warning buzzing, it was solumed and quite out with an occasional rumble from the glowing mountain. He unbuckles. Calls out on his radio but nothing. NO power. Malfunctioning mechs communication was locked out as with with the heat shutdown. He Crawls back opening his Bugout case removing tools and an old radio taking apart to see if life was still in it.

****The Gathering of Hosts***

The cool, crisp water in the basin felt good against the hot sweat and soot ridden skin of Lieutenant Peter Gabriel van Zorivich. After being in a long battle then baking in tin can like a can anchovies bathing in scorched motor oil, the ability to enjoy something so simple is unimaginable to those who only spectate safely from afar. The pine bar takes the harsh scent of human exertion and releases the stickiness that comes with it. Having to fully undress to refresh then replace the flight suit with nothing to separate the skin from the fabric is strangely adaptable for short periods of time but never advisable as the suit can be subject to the environment of the cockpit. But it will have to do for now. He folds his soiled separates then proceeds to head for the connected Mobile Hq vehicle that has been linked to the Modul. The tape and rickety Modul vibrates to airguns with an occasional flicker of sparks from welders reviving his Rifleman with new glory to be bestowed to it. As he approaches the coordinator, he is reminded how appreciative space is as spartan like bunk rooms pull double duty as hospital and for resting weary souls. Even then you are sharing from shift to shift. Humbling at most. He can smell the fragrance of the stew they prepared as the freshest meal they can provide under the conditions they face. It's much better than the calorie rations of the bugouts provisions that he insisted all the mech pilots have for emergencies yet the take alot of water to wash down hitting the stomach like lead. He hears the short wave Com chatter from scouts implement and repair crews hastely going about their duties. Peter sees that the street lights have reset from the last tremor they had which he has to indicate to his Hosts. He opened the hatch to the ready room and all at once.

“Officer on deck!!!” as they all turned to salute the Mechwarrior.

“At ease, appreciate the formalities but we are in the same boat here. Please let's focus on what we to do. Okay?”

“Yes Sir, “ with a bit of a giggle they respond as they note that he is not a stuck up like other Mechwarrior’s have been the past towards them. “please sir, come in. We prepared a hit fresh meal with bread and would like you tell us how you git yourself stranded here like the rest of us.”

“No problem explaining and that you for the food but first. My name is Peter Gabriel van Zorivich callsign Hellskeep as in Hell Keeps their own. Independent Alliance Forces House Liao at your service.”

“Commander Wilma Spader Seventh Cappellan Guard Mobile Infantry. My LT Commanders Sarah Windso, Arnold Schwarze, Michigan London, my Junior officers Graham Rayblu and Miska Tazum. My Cheif engineer “Itchy” Longfellow. Welcome to Sa’Voi Seven.”

Before they sat down he adresses the commander with abit of insight. “See those street lights, they've reset since the last tremor which means they are still connected to the city's main computer. “

“That would mean that the city Datalink would be still active. The Comstar link is out but surely we can use the local data.“ saying it with a thought and a smirk.

“Exactly, there is a Bank no more than a block from here. The Comstar link is down so they have fried the hard drive to their Automatic tellar once the evac order was given but still be contact with the central computer of the city. On my console, behind the throttle is a green hot box. Use it to link into the Datalink. It has the potential to espand our scoutable view through traffic cams and such. “

“Great idea, mind if we tie into your chassis comlinks? We got your Rifleman off life support and has a healthy heart beat again. Two of your reactors coolant vents was fused creating a heat loop build up. Another day it would have cracked but not before cooking the pilot.” She ways to a yomen that hurried off to initiate the commands. They sit down and took a moment as is tradition amongst Mechwarrior’s in remembrance of fallon comrades. Then they began to eat while Peter told the tell in a fashion that only a Mechwarrior can. The fear, the carnage, the thrill and the reverence was not spared to the aweing ear lusting for every detail of life and death in battle. Towards the end of the meal and the story, Jc Rayblu asked, “Your Commander's mech was dragged off, after his death. Why would they do that?”

“As your engineer's have probably found out. All my weapons are Clan Based. Salvage from the previous days battle. “

“But sir, the Evacuation order was yesterday. We've been trekking through ashe for over a day which means you was knocked out that long.”

“That's along nap, the heat is what brought me to so I guess luck was on my side there. NO way to tell accurate time and this ancient watch needs to be wind up.” taking the news of his abandonment with a grain of salt.

“Sir, we was up to date with Central up until they bailed. You are still listed as a Captain. “ blurted Itchy guzzling down his tea before rushing out back to work.

“Well Peter, since our records sees you as a Captain then a Captain you will be. It also helps Moral as your higher rank depicts more experience and greater chance we survive this planet.” Trying not to be contentive says the Commander.

“Be okay with you then I resume my former rank till at least we can get off this rock.” the newly reinstated Captain boosts.

Commander Spader finished up the detail and they proceeded to dismantle the wall between the Com operations and the war room conversion. “We are Live, Datalink established. Uploading administration protocol. Thirty minutes till we have controls. Com link integration and now transmitter is online.” then out of nowhere there was another unit desperately trying to make contact.

“Sa’Voi one to the person or persons that transmitted zero one hour ago, please fir the love of God come in. Over”

“ Sa’Voi one this is Sa’Voi Seven we read you five by five. Over”

With more glee and a great sigh of relief Sa’Voi one is happy to hear another unit has survived. “Sa’Voi Seven, what is your twenty over.”

“Sa’Voi one, Sector 12, Apple Grove, grid h9, over”

“Sa’Voi Seven, we are three clicks west by Southwest port city launch according to the highway signs. This ashe got everything screwed up. Having issue with terrain and filters over”

As the Commander Spader was giving out details dealing with ashe when finding out the units complement. Which two are Arrow Six launchers. Captain Zorivich had his attention drawn to a flashing yellow red light on one of the comboards. He sits down and types in an access code while asking an operator if they are tied into the Rifleman’s friend or foe acknowledgement system. The operator confirms then Peter begins to tune in to his mech channels. He hears scratchy but clear enough to determine the voice of a very pissed off Latina ripping up a storm. He carefully locks in the signal and sarcastically opens his mic.

“Stop pissing on your mech Echo Five oh Three, it's going to get rusty and we got work to do, over.”

With a agitated grouchy voice she replied, “This better not be my frog flipping imagination again, anyone one this dagnabbit comlink.”

“Alright Tacobell, keep your boxer briefs on or I'll see to it they are replaced with those sexy black lace undies.”

As he's talking to his comrade, he over hears the infantry commander tell Sa’Voi one that they have a Lance Commander with a heavy mech.

“Commander Spader strike that, you have two mechwarrior’s ok on board,” he flipped a switch as Echo 503 trys to comprehend who's she talking too.”

“Who is this and how the Sam hell do you about my..” then it comes to her,”HELLSKEEP you *******, how the frack are you not charcoal? Over”

“Got some even better news, we are not alone. A couple of infantry units are in area, stuck like us. Over”

As everyone is listening in on the vulgarity of two friends conversating, one of the technicians calledout. “City Datalink Established, grid map available.”

“Activate Halo map on the Grid Table, run comlink data overlay.” The LT Commanders orders was stern and to the point. The senior staff and Peter looks over the map.

“See here's us, here is Sa’Voi one, you comrade is here, near the tunnel bridge. But what is this flicker here,”questioned the Commander and LT Commander. The captain looks over the broken data blotch.

“503, what is your condition over?

“Yello out of ammo, tangled up in spaghetti from bridge, why over.”

“Standbye, Sa’Voi one proceed to defense formation designate Zeta One” as he programs the board on the combat solution. “Commander that a hot mech, IFF unfriendly. Is my Rifleman ready,”

“Yes Sir, all hands secure your stations, hostel Walker detected. Move non engages to the rear.”

“Mam, look!” as an Ensign pointed out at the edges of the grid map where from the north east a green blip signifying a friendly mech from do east another and what looks like three more Sa'Voi units scattered about closing in on their broadcast wave just outside comlink.

”Perfect, company coming and we have a hot zone. Captain your mech is ready to pounce. “

“Sa’Voi Seven get two platoons over to 503. We may need her help asap. Sa’Voi one be prepared to act like a heavy over”

“Aye Captain we be ready to long bomb arrow launchers primed. “

Peter plus a Scourcher and Hardbringer cautiously move through the city slowly bringing to bare on the position of the enemy mech.

“Enemy mech spotted. Stand down, enemy mech is disabled, mangled up in some construction site. Repeat stand down. Continue to sweep area while I investigate, over”

“Roger Captain, All Sa’Voi units code yellow stand down. Continuous sweep and clear. Update status of inbound and 503 rescue every five tics”

Captain Zorivich climbs off his mech as two of the tanks personel takes flank for back up. He waddled in and out of I beams till he reach the front glass of the windshield of the mech. It's the Uller. It survived. He can see inside as the pilot has been impaled by a long shaft of rebar steel. “I need a medic and two engineers over here pronto, Itchy hope over. This mech looks salvagable. Over. “

“Be right over.” excited to get to retrieve a clanners mech. Itchy hops a mobike and treads over to Peter. “Your friend is almost on her way, few more strands and she'll be free.”

“ Echo 503, meet up with Sa'Voi one and escort them down. Salvage targets of opportunity in route back. Sa’Voi Seven begin scavenger hunts throughout city. Find any civilians still hidden. The looters would have fled Grid by now. Shoot to kill in defense. Three man teams. Semi hex format. Any contact yet on inbound friendlies?”

“Negative 505. Still off grid. Eta first contact 8 minutes. Over.”

“Roger that Sa’Voi Seven.”

“503 is clear and in route to Sa’Voi one randevous. “

“Sa’Voi one to 505, you're not going to believe this but a lone Modul had followed out dust trail. Their Com is damaged but is able to hear. They've been trekking fir hours now hoping to catch us.”

“ Echo 503, hear that, make yourself shiny when you get up there. Sa’Voi one give them our location and status. They are not alone.over”

“Aye aye captain.”

As Itchy and the engineers find Peter and the mech they start devising the way to clear the mech but first making sure the pilot if secured. They cut away chunks of steel and shovel ashe and debris from around the cockpit of the active Uller being careful not to free the legs yet till they can shut it down. They carefully remove a sheet of windshield glass to craw in. Allowing an engineer to power off the system. They put a mask over the pilot to help him breath as he has been exposed to ashe for two days. They cut the impaling rebar from front and back carefully taking him out of the mech.

“ Echo 505, scavenge report from Judes Hospital. They have power and a short staff of a doctor and a few nurses that got accidentally left behind. They are prepared to accept your patient and agreed to stabilize for transit when needed”

“ Sa’Voi Seven. Sa’Voi Two FIVE here. Moving on your position. Sounds like you guys got it together. We've been holding on to faith that some one who hasn't gave up on us here over”

“Welcome to the party Sa’Voi 25, what is you compliment. Over.”

“Just a Mobile HQ with staff and a few civilian APC’s. We lost our artillery in a death stroke. Three hardfall triad obliterated the company. Over”

“Don't worry, just scavenge as you make your way in. We have two columns plus two healthy walkers working on a third plus two inbound companies plus walking friendlies. Over”

“Combat units?”

“Negative, survivability formation. Over”

about a half hour later Itchy sings Eureka. As he powers up the Uller and clumsily makes it back to Sa’Voi Seven. Peter sees that the pilots care is almost complete sophisticated he get back to his mech and returned to the Hq Modul to greet Sa’Voi one and two five as another large tremor hit the city breaking up asphalt and shattering building glass.

"Punch in the data from the Sizmic Institute. Damn, see that, the volcanic craters edge is breaking free. “ just as he was pointing out the new threat. A familiar face runs and jumps into his arms. " Gunny Sargent Isabel Ramerez, glad to see you too, lol.”

“When I saw the BBQ I thought you bought it, then seen those drop ships leave I lost heart. BTW thanks for the bugouts provisions. That was really smart of you.”

“I got a big enough head as is Tacobell.” playfully agitating the female Mechwarrior. “ But we are not done here, we have an eruption emenant. Plus more units inbound. ”

“Baker 404 to those transmitting on House Liao encryption please come in” as the weak mechs pilot desperately trys to call out to help. VIP convoy package need assist. Over”

“ Sa’Voi Seven randevous point Charlie Victor Apple Grove City. Bead in on our beacon. Rank and status Over”

“Eta 30, Private Mike Danaher Cappellan Confederation Guard. Battlemaster is in the red, barely keeping the armour on, internals yellow. Weapons are ok but offline. Envoy and special package in fair condition we have casualties needing medical attention. Escort units desimated. Was being perused but broke contact five hours ago.”

“this is Sa’Voi 95 we hear you loud and clear Seven. We have a mixed star plus a Modul but running low on fuel and plus not equipment nor ammo. Even our roamers are getting low. Over.”

“Show them on the map, ok there. 95, proceed to north west highway for three clicks. You'll find a station called ‘Lightning Jacks’ you can refuel there plus go around to truck bay. Find the kyoske and type in the following code. You will have access to the basement. Load up what you can. That should get you going good. Do me a favor and send a person up one click north to see if a Ned Sandra made it put of the area. If not, evacuated his family. He has a heavy tractor plus a floater slab. Over”

“Will do Lance comand. Over "

“Wiskey 311, Captain, this is Buck Sargent Avery Summit. I've been bubbling in and out every since I heard your voice. Mind if I stumble in. Over”

“Sargent, what is your mech status. Over”

“Got a bad leg Captain and half full of ordinance sir. Alittle soggy here and there. I missed my ride with this gimpy leg. Glad someone else was roasting marshmallows other than me.”

“ Sa’Voi 95 prepare when loaded, we got a stragglers coming in from east off coast. Get his legs working right. We can fix the rest later. Right now all inbound. Prepare to move North West in one hour. Sizmic readings of increasing danger in area. Baker 404. We’ll stabilize your mech as you get here but we still need to move over. “

As time slowly past and this band of military refugees coagulate together. They prepared for an Expedition North west in Exudus away from the angry volcano which is about destroy the city and the surrounding areas with fire and stone.

***Exudus the Inferno, the weary souls to rest***

Our wayword mix of oddball heroes waited till the very last minute gathering their respective brethren as they plowed through ashe. One by one the came either out of hope or desperation or even just the longing not to be left behind like so many others on this world. Keeping an I on the volcanic disturbance and gathering data and supplies to last long enough to be effective. This ragtag bunch plans out how and where to go to avoid detection as much as destruction.

"You see this highway” asks the Atuned Captain, “This is how we navigate out of here with low visability.”

“Ok I see that the road leads away, but I can't corelate the significance of the routem” says a confused Ensign.

The the Lieutenant Commander respectfully asks,”What's so special with this route, as you see here,” pointing to a wider overland area on the halo map,”this way gives us shelter on both sides from a field of view and looks shorter between a few set navs.”

“Visual range is being effected by the ashe, plus the windstorm generated by the volcano are creating drifts that can be large enough to obscure landmarks.”

“yes, yes I see that but this road wind's around and zigzag in many areas. Still don't see how it is better.” as the destressed LT Commanders voice kackles.

“The road is of a Magnalock construction, it has magnetic rails embedded systems that allows both conventional and traditional forms of transportation to utilize the same highway network. Even with the power off. The rails retain their magnetic field.” explains the Captain.

“Ah, I see!” blurts Itchy guzzling down a cup of coffee. “It's a blind system. As long as we stay on the road. We don't need to see where we are going as the roads itself is our guide. I can adjust a few coils that can trek on those tracks abit better. Plus use the connected network to atleast *feel* down the road for obstructions, breaks and possibly traffic. Hopefully friendly traffic.”

Scratching their heads as it began to sink in the Sa'Voi units Commanders order in formation as the Mechwarrior Private move in and request medical care for those in his convoy.

“Sir, Private Danaher here.” he salutes the captain.” I have VIP wounded, Kuritian envoys wife is injured and I have two of the planetary governors daughters. The youngest is sick.”

“At ease private, “Turns to Commander Spader with urgency, “Need the Docs over there promptly. Make sure guards are posted with the enemy pilot. Private. They should have you mobile anytime, get back to your mech. We’ll debrief once we are safely away from here. You and Srg Summit has the largest mechs, both of you are going to act like blows. Ramerez has the lightest so she plays the rustler, I'll bring up the rear. Let's get it done.”

With haste, they group up with mechs front and back, followed by military vehicles and tanks and keeping civilian transports in the center. They doze through tons of ashe stomping across the map slowly not to allow the group to sway of course only stopping to cool down their make shift shielding and to gather Sa’Voi one whom was already ahead of the group. It took hours to get a dozen or so miles away with many more before safety can be achieved. When Apple Cove’s Datalink died they trekked on even though a few messages of survivors rang across the Com computer. They had no choice but to leave as they did. Staying any longer would have put them all in jeopardy.
“Captain, do you feel that?” Echo 503 frantically realized what was going on.

“Echo 505 here, Baker and Wiskey pick up the pace. Sa’Voi Seven and Sa'Voi One. Steady up, have other Sa’Voi units prepare for land shifting. How far out are we?”

“Sa’Voi one to 505, we are 46 kilometers out. Still in suspected hot zone, Sa'Voi 25, what's up with the grey smoke.”

“Sa’Voi 25 reporting, we have a bad regulator and is venting coolant and causing goo to form near intake.”

“Sa’Voi 25 this is Sa’Voi 95, we are going to latch on and tow you. A few tanks are adding additional plowing to keep the debris off you, over “

“Sa’Voi 95, grateful for the assist. Echo 503, we have a bleep 17 k south east from our last uav. Relaying data to all mechs.”

“Baker 404 to Echoe 505, I recognize those signatures. Those were the pursuers from earlier this morning. Over”

Right then the ashe thinned out and a great rumbling of thunder came from behind them with a large orange column of light came from the direction where the unknown enemy signal was tracking in from.

“Everyone make break speed Now!” as the captain orders over the com,”Ambient Heat Rising” his instrument began to flash. “Move!” he screams at his mech.

“Captain, heat levels increased by 25%,” declared each Sa’Voi unit reported in.

The land began to shift and the ashe ran backwards like the oceans tides before a crashing of a wave. The Captain zoomed in ahead Of the group and saw a big shadow in the hillside. “Heat Level at 50% and rising.” The computer calmly states as all hell has broke free. “Echo 505 to all units break formation, head 20% west of highway. Acknowledge if you see what I see.”

“ Sa’Voi Seven reporting, Yes we see it, make way for shelter in tunnel. That would be an excellent cover. Anyone have any uav’s left.”

“ Sa’Voi 115, we have a uav but not fully equipped over.”

“Seven to 115, launch it as long as it has a camera I want eyes on unknown threat. We are two clicks to randevous with cover. That eruption may take care of those pursuers. Over”

“Ten Four, Sa’Voi Seven. Launched. "

“Heat Levels Critical Shutdown Emminent, Override Engaged.” “Hold together baby, hold together “ as the Captain is the last to enter the tunnel as he sees the pyroclastic cloud from the south east approach like a charging raged bull at a rodeo. He became relieved as his temperature began to slowly drop as he made a turn that followed the tunnels path. As it opened up to a rather large cavern network with a road traveling Streight through. They ashe free environment looked inviting to say the least. For the time being, they can afford to use this opportunity to repair and rest their equipment plus explore their temporary refuge. As they circle the wagons and began to unload the camp, they are ordered to rest a bit for it was a long hard day that they can celebrate that they escaped certain doom by the grace of God letting them find a Mechwarrior Mercenary that has provided leadership and hope. They only send ahead two Hardbringer tanks and a Scourcher to scope out the tunnel ahead a post changing guard Patrols to insure their safety in the cavern. But for now they are at eased.

The next morning the engineering crews devise the cleaning and clearing the machines while eating fresh perishable food for breakfast not knowing when will the next time the will be able to. One of the engineers had an idea to use a weather balloon and the core of a spotlight to imitate having a sun so they can keep a 24 hour Galactic Standard time. The mobile headquarter vehicles had networked together to coordinate each command units leadership with the Mechwarrior’s metal at its core. They have a reprieve that they can't waste nor do they know how long they have till they move on. After breakfast and a morning duty roster they begin to debrief each other on how they came to be in each others company. Commander Spader approaches Captain Zorivich with a list of ideas that needs discussion and the data from the last launch uav. At the table are each Sa’Voi unit commander and the mechwarrior’s themselves.

“Commander Roy Hopper Sa’Voi One,”

“Commander Kelly Grace Sa’Voi Two Five,”

“Lieutenant Commander Mena Kova Sa’Voi Nine Five.”

“Junior Office Megell Lorin Sa’Voi One One Five”

“Julius Drapes, Cappellan Confederation Escort services.

" Commander Wilma Spader Sa’Voi Seven.”

“Captain Peter Zorivich, Echo Company IAF.”

“Gunnery Sargent Isabel Ramerez, Echo Company IAF, “

“Buck Sargent Avery Summit, Wiskey Company UAF,”

“Private Mike Danaher, Coppellan Confederation Guard,”

Now that the introductions have been made they begin to go over the situation reports and several data cues. First was the patrolling reports from the Hardbringer tanks. With the help of the halo table and map. They are able to visualize the information contained in these reports almost first hand.

“ok, here we are. A well made and structurely secured cavern. Here, as you see, the way we came in is blocked several hundred meters by hot rock and ashe so No one will be following up from there. And here is the other end. Can't go outside yet as it looks like a few lava bombs are still raining from the eruption. Now let's overlay our map. The UAV we launched last, watch the video data closely. “ As the data reel played out. The host got to see the unknown pursuers demise with great detail. Twenty or so small explosions depicting small vehicles then eight larger explosions with ‘blinding brilliant light’ with flaming streaks per trudging the pyroclastic cloud. “See those, those was mechs and by the size of the explosions, atleast heavy class chassis by the look of it. Private Danaher, you said those signatures looked familiar. Let's start with you. What was your mission and why did they give an Assault lance command to a private and a Battlemaster.”

“Yes Sir, my mission was to be apart of a support group and escort for the Evacuation of VIP’s in New Hampton Cove with several other units and Mercenary lances to cover the exists. High Command required not mech lighter than a heavy with most assaults configured for speed and long distance engagement. Heavies set for close range interceptions. I'm used to being in a medium weight scout mech. This is my first time in anything larger than a hunchback. When we arrived, our VIP’S was getting into their armored limousines as Aerospace fighters began strafing runs with only a few helo units trying to defend the group. Being outside the eruption zone airpower ruled. The helos was knocked out of the sky by the incoming Mass of Mechs least fifty in number. One by one the mansions was blown to dust with any civilian transports being incinerated. The battle went quickly as the Enemy mecks made waste to anything that stood in there path. Those of us that had limited combat experience was ordered to retreat with whatever VIP we could. I was with the Kuritian escort as we ran hard and fast. Six of us mechs joined together as one of the limousines that had two of the children of the governor we swatted at the aerospace fighters keeping them from using missiles at the limos as we figured they was the primary targets. After a few hours sensors picked up a long range threat a tried to hold a firing line while three tried flanking maneuvers to tag for missile lock. We was making ground till a few fast runners came in and raddled our chain. Falling off again retreating to keep the limo safe we met up with two HQS with a tank compliment. We quickly transferred all VIP to the heavier armour of the HQS then decoyed the limos on auto drive away from us in hope to distract the enemy and draw them away. I took heavy damage and was told to stay with the group as the last two defenders took flanks to ambush then make them split up the pursuit. That was the last time I heard from them till I came across your frequency. Lucky for me that my commander said to head into the ashe field to hide if needed.”

“We pulled data from your mech since it was more dated than the others. Ok here we go. There is New Hampton and there was the two Hardfall in that area and three more over here. Looks like they dropped a few hydros so that is where air support launched from. We are here. All these grey hexes are active combat zones with clusters of two and three. We know that they maybe cold now but the bases might be in use by the invaders. These red zones, those are scorched earth. We have to avoid those. Lots of yellow patches and there. The white hexes. That's our ticket. Most of those are forests or ravines. Mostly narrow canyons and that yellow four hundred kilometers from us. That's where we might get a break. It is home to a private space launch. We can allocate our wounded and VIP’S from there. As long as they are with us I expect to be hounded by scouts putting the rest of us on greater risk.”

Commander Hopper steps in. “ok, here is the data from our patrols. We can't go outside yet but we still can focus sensors atleast here,”showing on the map. “where we've picked up intermittent signals stationary here, here, and here, mostly in this canyon network. Plus at the edge of the focused range, there is a city. Condition of it is unknown till we can scout it. Itchy from Sa'Voi Seven is modifying the enemy mech for us to use. It's neuro-link is booby trapped but Echo Company has the potential solution as their nuro is different from others. Ok LT Commander Kova your turn.”

“ Here East of our determined line is a hardened base for Modul units. If we can use that city an sneak a peek at the base. We might be able to repair, retool, refuel and replace Modul units. Stonehammers would have no effect on these based but they can be hard to get If garrison forces take use of them. Three erppc and a lrm system that is very formidable. “

Julius Drapes takes up the conversation as to be the representative of the civilian populate That has joined refuge with the combat group. “The civilians have let me represent them and to see that they are informed about the situation. There are two thousand people with one hundred being children. Four are infants and twelve are orphans. The families have obsorbed the orphans as their own. A group of women with a few men have begun preserving parishables and have figured we have a week of fresh food that needs to be consumed before it goes to waste. With the current list of casualties we have twenty seven dead and eighty five wounded. We are considering making a grave site at the end of the cavern far from our water sourse. They have set a monitor at the water supply to keep a check for toxicity aches we are still in the volcanic region. Air quality is also available for monitoring. Parents are concerned about the children's education needs and wonders if a dialog in the near future will adress this. They are putting together a list of skills and needs as most do not have addiquate accommodations.”

“our Hqs is mostly empty. We can use it as housing for some families and stripping the command center out of it would support many bunks, a few of us stay there to help communicate with the rest of you. Those signal that we are picking up might be mining rigs. They are unmanned and might be possible to piggy back a few data packages if someone is listening. Some of the civilian populate are long distance commercial drivers that are looking up resources in the region to the north.”

“ Ok we have a game plan in in the works, for now we see being here few several days so let's enjoy it while remaining productive.

With a long day of slowed productivity yet relaxing day passing by. The ashe they removed from the vehicles and machine giants was used to make mortar for the resting stones of the dead far from the encampment within the cavern. An occasional soft tremor remind them how close they were from disaster. The soldiers attend to safety and security while civilians try to make sense of it all while children play games giving the simplest feeling of hope and being.

***The Long Walk Outside ***

The night, or as it's perceived as night, was a little bumpy as a seismic tremor lightly shook the cavern the used as refuge. A team of engineers constantly monitored the walls and ceiling for any signs that it would become unstable and to keep check on the uncontaminated water source for any chance of it changing. The forward patrol discovered a service tunnel just big enough for small vehicles and the utility suites that lead to an open service bay and load docks that overlook a cassume where a bridge once stood. Still noticing the light ashe falling, the air was not harsh to breath and was fresher than being in the cavern for nearly a week. The tank operators was still worried about the intermittent transmissions towards the east of the exit. The morning came as Captain Zorivich gets awoken by a visitor with an usual request knocking at his door.
“Captain?” as the young ladies voice carefully rings behind the door, “Captain Peter Zorivich, may I discuss something with you, please. “ Ivana Koche is an aspiring young daughter of the governor of the planet who walks with the grace of can aristocrat but also very active in the physical activities of her private school as on sports and planetary debates. The old Captain opens the door which his appearance slightly startled the poor girl as she was never seen an older gentlemen in the rank of Captain.

“Helo, how may I help you this morning? “ trying not to be rude in his normal morning grizzly like demeanor. “Don't mind me, I don't bite. About to fix a cup of breakfast tea, would you like a cup while we talk about what it is you would like of me.”

“Yes sir, that would be grand, thank you.” the most polite and pleasant voice you could ever hear is spoken out of this child mouth.

“Come on in, and I'll start the water.” as he directs her into this small state room with two little bunks a desk with chairs and a hideaway vanity. “I recognize you from the refuge report, you're the governor's oldest daughter if I'm not mistaken. Two sugars?”

“ Yes Sir, two sugars will be nice, no citrus or cream please. I am the oldest daughter and my youngest sister is with me recovering from the attack. Evalene will be on her feet I hope in the next week or two.” She is handed a metal cup with a sweet essence of blended tea and takes a quick sip. ”This isn't synthesized tea?”

“No Mam, it is not. It comes from my home world on the outskirts of the Federate Suns empire. My great uncle and my father was born in the Cappellan Confederation.” explaining as he sits to drink his tea. ”I've always kept a big stash in my mech just for this such occasion. Seen many atrocities and trying to keep a piece of civilization helps to deal with a crisis. So, what are we up to this day?”

“Sir, I heard a rumor that you might be heading out to scout around and I would like to join you or your other pilot if I may.” being very humble in her request she goes on to explain her reasoning,This, sir, is my home world. I was born here just like many of my siblings, my grandparents are buried in our family sepulcher just north of the capital city. This is my world and anything I can do to help my people and rid us of these invaders I feel is my duty to do so. So please, I beg, may I join your scouting expedition?”

Shocked at the showing of such honor and devotion from a child this young, Captain Zorivich starts to contemplate the risk verses the additional eyes and hands which would be useful out there. He turn to his computer and starts opening some channels. “Ramerez, you up? Need to know if you cockpit in the Bushwacker has any jumpseats.”

“I here boss, yes it's got two actually but it plays hell with ejection. Why did you ask” bluntively replying as she is covering herself as she also is trying to hide something.

“I've got a visitor this morning who had a request and I….. you're not alone are you? Who's there with you?” curiously the captain continued.

“Hi boss!” as a hairy arm sticks out from the covers to indicate his presence.

” Morning Tex, atleast you two are on the line together, I'm going to have us some guest ride sidesaddle on our scouting patrol. If those mining rigs are still communicating with a satcom, maybe we can hijack the satellite radio frequency and bounce the signal around till we find someone listening.” Gabriel sips the last drop of his tea, “This is Ivana, she's the elder daughter of governor Koche and this is her homeworld. Might come in handy but it is at most extra eyes.” he turns to Ivana and asks if she wanted another cup and with a nod of her head he pours another cup. “See you two in twenty,” Gabriel sips his freshly poured tea and opens another channel closing the one that was still broadcasting as his pilots try to finish up what they was doing before being interrupted. “Itchy, I see you making an early start. Who's your best man? Going to have them ride sidesaddle in the Bushwacker. “

“ That a be Widdle, sir. Not much of a talker but hell with a torche. His sister is one of the nurses we picked up.” chugging coffee down as he spoke “Hey Widdle, grab a case and an Evo, ya going fishing. While ya at it swing by and get sis. Ya got 10 to be at the ready room. “

“Thanks Itchy, anything you want me to keep an eye out for while I'm out there?”

“when ya get near those drills, see what spare parts and lube oils they might be storen. Tools and trinkets would be happy to have a new home. And if ya can strip it without losing integrity. We might be able to adapt the gear for something. “ Itchy winks as to let the captain know what he really wanted.

“Okay Itchy, we'll be out there in the hour.” he laughs a bit then turns the com system off to talk to his guest. ”I only knew your father as a guest from my island resort where he and I presume your mother stayed at last year. Dealing with interstellar politics is not my strong suit but being an advate businessman is my fortay.”
“ lYes, I recall them going on vacation while my siblings was at our private schools. My older brothers and I didn't stay too far from eachother and was able to keep in contact.” speaking slower with each syllable, “wonder if any of them made it off world to safety.”

Seeing that see was about to cry, Captain Zorivich starts to comfort her and give her hope with the upcoming mission. ”well, if we succeed in getting contact with Liao forces off planet, we will be able to get an update on your family. Like I said to the crew, this is your homeworld and as the elder daughter of governor Koche, you are our official representative of the civilian government here. Therefore we should consider your views and ideas in our operations. Can we count on your leadership young lady?”

With a renewed sense of duty and vigor she replied, “ Yes Sir, Captain. “

They finished their tea and put all housewares away and started to make way to the Officer's Ready Room where Commander Spader with a few others was going over the days agendas.

”Officer On Deck” yells an Ensign as the Captain and Ivana entered the chamber. ” At ease” he replied. As they stood over the halo map table which had incomplete data being displayed with glitches in the information. The communication boards all active with the daily routine of each unit with one operator playing chess while attending three other monitors. ”Rook to kings three”,says the Captain as the yeoman checks his opponent “a hey thanks “ as he hears over his headset. “hey that's cheating, you had the captains help”. ”makes no difference, you lost”.

” Commander Hopper, Commander Spader, this is Ivana Koche daughter of the governor. She has volunteered to be apart of our operations as it is her planet and her people being the ones mostly affected by both the invasion and the natural disaster. She has tactical knowledge of her planet we can use plus she's willing to learn.”

“Miss Koche, can you fire a weapon? “asks Commander Hopper with a flat voice affirming that he has no opinion either way on the idea. “you have to aim straight and not hesitate when someone else is counting on you to have their back. Can you kill if the needs arises? "

" Yes, to your first question. My parents sent us children to private schools whom had Rifle teams. I was on the varsity squad last season plus I like to go on safari with my parents. As to your latter concern, I've never **** at a person before or been in combat. I can only hope that I can fulfill my duty and my aim be true when the time comes. ”

“Good enough for me, you have my approval. Ensign Tate, we have any petite size Evo-suits in storage. ” Hopper barks off.

“No sir. We have plenty of smalls, but no petite. ” Ensign Tate relays back.

“Bring one plus some zip cord, we can adapt it.” he looks up at the young Girl, “It's going to be loose on you but tying off at the joints without blocking the breather system should work for you till we find an exact fit. At Least you don't have an Alaya-Mijnana system like the captain here to configure too.”

“Sa’Voi one is going to send units through the discovered service tunnel here with mobike and mobilsuit with ER small lasers with enhanced focus. Not much damage but it will get someone's attention.” Commander Spader detailing the days mission. “so after you exit, carefully make your way west around the Canyon soon the sensor data can be relayed back to HQ then given to your support units in the ravine. They will explore the ravine and setup an observation post at the ravines entrance once it is confirmed safe. From there they can also set a diversion should the need arise. Visability is still low, about 460 meters at best. Your light will not stir much ashe but the medium mech might be seen at those distances. I suggest run passive radar and use radio silence as much as possible.”

“Engineer Specialist First Class reporting for duty, Sir.”
“Registered Practitioner Nurse Betty Widdle reporting.”

“Hey Boss we made it, “ Sgt Ramerez busted in with Sgt Summit on her tail.

”Private Danaher is in his mech trying to reconfigure his controls. The engineers has his weapons on lockdown for maintenance and calibration. I'll open a channel Sir.”

“ Okay folks, we have our itinerary for today, Danaher you and Ramerez will be running drills and combat scenarios with your neuro-link and virtual helmet. I want your test level up by 2 before we leave this cavern. The Hq will be periodically updated as Me and Texas run around the next operations area, our low profiles should be sufficient to not draw attention. Sgt, the Bushwacker’s neuro-link is reset for standard connection. Once we create a few link test at any drill heads I want to take some time to listen to the up link. Hopefully friendly traffic can be heard after we've taken control over the satellites. Our tag lasers had the color crystal removed and a text com system tied into our weapons load out identification relay. We can communicate with each other and send data packets upto 1.5 km away even in low visibility. Thermal shouldn't be a problem to use to see each other as the temperature is low in the canyon. If we get separated for too long of a period. Use your data maps and backtrack to the ravine first before going to the tunnel entrance to the cavern. Take care for time when doing so. The support units will create a tow line up to 2km from entrance to get an all clear for your return. At most we should be able to do this together. Commander Spader have an Hq vehicle ready with some engineers by the end of the day with the hover pad. If we find salvage we can operate at night to recover it. Ramerez will escort them out with two tanks. The rest can build a last stand defense in the tunnel. If have to evacuate. Secure the service entrance and clasp the exit. But that's is a last ditch effort. Hopefully we don't use it.”

“On the way over can I tell my sister that I'm able to go out.” asks Ivana as she trys to snug the Evo-suit a little bit more so it fits better.

”Yes, I want to check on another patient over in the medical quarters, too.” the captain continued.

With the command com hustle and bustle the scouting crews start walking out of the main Hq as they split up. The captain and Ivana climbing into the Hq being used as a hospital and a brig for the unconscious enemy Mechwarrior. Gabriel is there to check in on a friend more than the other.

“How is she? " he asked the Kuritian Ambassador as seen kneeling by his wife. ” any changes in her condition?”

In ancient Japanese, the weeping Ambassador replies, “No, no change Gabrielson, she has been in a coma all this time. We are lucky to be alive but I don't know, I just don't know. ..” he breaks down in uncontrollable tears, “I'm sorry Gabrielson, my apologies for my anger towards you and my wife. I should have tended towards her needs more..”

“Apologies accepted, if there is anyways to get you and her off this rock we'll do it. This is Ivana Koche daughter of governor Koche and she has taken up charge to see this engagement through. We’ll get you off world. “ Captain Zorivich bows to the ambassador as does Ivana.

”I just didn't know that language but you spoke it so well. How can you do that?” Ivana curiously inquires.

”I can speak many languages through the Alaya-Mijnana system as it stores data I can recall even when not connected to a mech. I teach you about it on the patrol.” as the captain makes their way to the mech area.

All the other Mechwarrior’s have saddled their mechs going through the checklists before going full power. Ivana climbs in and is secured then entered Captain Zorivich. Itchy goes over a few details of the adapted enemy Uller stating that it's an exact copy of an Adder with only a cosmetic look. He states that it has a tag in left shoulder, ER large laser in head hard point a machine gun in right shoulder and short range missiles in right arm. Erppc in the left arm. They lower the hatch then secures it as the computer goes through the routine.

”We won't be able to test the weapons system out till we are outside and far away from the entrance. If anyone has a listening or seismic monitor the weapons fire my alert someone.” Gabriel says over the internal comlink in his mech to Ivana. “if we get into a match with an enemy keep the tag laser fixed on the hip actuator of the enemy. Texas will be able to lock missiles at great distances in this visibility while we run main sensors for max range. Our main goals are to survey the operation areas, find an active mining iplink, make sure no one follows us back to base. Secondary objectives find salvage and gather intell. Targets of opportunity is to be avoided unless deemed safe to engage. The nurse is acting medic. The engineers for salvage and technical issues in field. ”

“Gotcha, this display has some icons flashing. Should I click on one.?” asks Ivana as the mech walks down the tunnel a few kilometers from the exit.

“Go on and click the first icon. It's the information on the tag modified system we are going to use. Tag is not only for combat but a tool that can scan an area giving a topicagrahical map plus pick up energy and heat readouts along with any signal readings. We are getting close to the exit, from here we head west til we find the ravine the infantry units will cover. Then head north in a zigzag backtracking every half hour.”

Ivana watch the video lecture as Gabriel starts his turn west but Texas moves a half kilometer east to start his survey. Then move slightly northwest before forwarding west to follow the captain on his run.

“Alright, we are at our first scan point. Click the icon for the tag laser and set it for survey mapping on a continuous loop. And I'll circle the mech around a few times.” commands the captain with his mech slowly turning while looking through the thermal images on his hud display. After a few minutes when they spot the Bushwacker on the edge of the tag range. They signal that they are heading to the next area. This comical dance of Mechs goes on for an hour several kilometers from the exit til they found a ravine to check out to see if it's the one the infantry is at. While Texas stands guard, Gabriel slowly creeps down the pathway of broken road and bridges in poor repair til at last he meets the infantry units who has a good vantage base set in the dock garage. Several mobilsuit infantry tethered on Uller back as to hitch a ride to make a forward position which the rest will catch up. Ivana downloads the current data retrieved so far by the two mechs as the Hq can compile the information to be debriefed later with. After dropping the infantry off. The two mechs spread out and started their next scanning run towards the north east for two hours then back west. On one of the North east runs Ivana spoke up to alert captain Zorivich of reading she reviewed.

“It's right here,” as she had learned to transfer information to the pilot chair hud. “ south east from us about 759 meters and 5500 meters due north of the exit I presume. A structure very tall but no active reading. Oh wait, there's another east about 400 meters and it is active.”

“Notify Texas, have him move up to cover us as we check them out.” The captain moves in on the first structure ever so gentle not to distribute to much ashe around. As he arrived at the tower at which he couldn't see the top for the ash cloud was too dense. “ It's an old communication tower, it has thousands meters of cable we can use. Have the Bushwacker meetup here.”

After a few careful minutes past the Bushwacker was nose to nose with the Uller.

”Yeah boss, what ya find” muddled Sgt Summit.

“Need your engineer's opinion, hey Widdle see what we found. Think we can create a communication tether nearly ten kilometers long?” The Captain requested.

”If we find another one like this maybe but I know surely we can use the cables to hard line to the entrance. Least it's something that can keep us less exposed if we get a satellite link going.” Widdle replied.

”okay stay here and see what you and your sister can uncover. I'm heading to the active structure just out from visual. “

Captain Zorivich closes his hatch and backs away watching the two siblings climb down the rope ladder to trek their way to the towers based building. After about a hundred meters the next structure where they hit paydirt, an active unmanned mining unit with a screening dish. After a good sweep of the area in all directions for several hundred meters before he returned to check out the mining platform. He walks his mech right up to the catwalk so he can easily get in and out of his mech. Ivana was more than happy to get out and stretch her legs after being in the mech most of the day. They entered the mines office which had three sections. The normal desk, tables and commons area with a pull out couch. The kitchen slash toiletries area. Then the operation controls. With only several hours till dusk, they quickly setup the first relay server with data packets to start transmission once the satellite is confirmed under their control. The satellite took only thirty minutes to confirm new protocols without alerting that the system is now covertly controlled. When they was done, they returned to the mech to continue sweeping after they get the Bushwacker crew back on task. They took up positions parallel to each other to quickly scan the current op area for the next ten kilometers from the mine and tower. It was turning night as they was about to do a final lateral sweep as they found many more active mines and And a few more towers then suddenly a spec was hitting a significant signal.

*Target Aquired.* the mechs computer alerted as the weapon system locked on a short range missile turret apparently in motion more than 1.5 kilometers away.
*Mech Power Up Detected* called out four times.

”where's the Bushwacker?” the nervous Captain asks.

”Its on our six just over a one kilo. Alerting to the detection. “ the startled Ivana replied.

”Tell them to rendezvous at site beta at full speed, evade ,evade, evade.. If they have to, set mech to auto-turret and scuttle if needed. Don't worry about us, secure operations.”

“Aye sir, they replied and is out of our range in two minutes. What are we going to do?” the poor girl trying to hide that she is scared.

“look over the data log quickly, see that last mine near the canyon wall. There is a cave or mine entrance just big enough for this small mech to squeeze in. I'm heading over there. As soon as possible. We have no visible mech detection and that turret was in motion. We’ll camp out there, and use the mine office to observe the area.”

The Captain was barely able to get the mech far enough away from view in this abandoned mine near the rig. He and Ivana grab their laser rifles and some provisions to call it a night in the mining platforms operations office. Captain Zorivich shuts down the drilling and processors to set it up as if it is doing doing a normal diagnostic scan then activates the mines seismic monitor with increased sensitivity that would detect any thing moving around several hundred meters outside visual range. All they could do is wait as darkness fell on the ash cloud ridden canyon.

***Only Time Will Tell ***

It was the forward outpost that determined that there was a problem. The sensor pods they laid out was going crazy with erratic readings slowly closing in on the entrance to the ravine which seemed to come from multiple sources. The Sergeant at arms in charge messaged back to the dock area and they sent word to operations that an unknown entity was closing in on the ravines operatives. Preparing for the worse with military fashion they begin to plan a fail safe exit strategy should the need arise. The civilians gather up all the wares they utilized in the cavern plus began a water stockpile. The engineers ready all mechs with Itchy going over the Maulers specs and operations manual with two other engineers. The tanks start briefing on formations and coordination with the mechs for closed quarters and open range fighting.

“Report from forward operations Ma’am”, the Ensign alerted the officer on the Com,”unknown activity inbound to the ravine. Observation post reports audio vibration signatures possibly from multiple sources. E.T.A unknown.”

Lieutenant Commander Kova was on duty at the time hit the synchronized alert switch and began to dish out order after order.

"Message them back, we need a fix on the threat and an estimated guess on the inbound. Commander Spader and Hopper needs to be reported to. Itchy, “ as she opens com link after comlink on the video screens. “ we need an inventory of all ordnance not strapped to a walker or vehicle. I need you to come up with some ideas how we can use them. Tank Commanders, fuel up and be ready to debrief once we get a fix. Jules, tell the civilians we are going through a drill, stow away all goods and start water collection. Get me Gunny Ramerez on the line. “

“Isebel Ramerez reporting, what's up?”

“Gunny, we have a situation developing as we speak. Forward eyes reporting heavy clanking from multiple locations with no visibility or thermal outside ranges. But it's definitely closing in on the ravines operatives. Preparing a plan to evade and exit if needed. Any input would you suggest?”

“Indeed, I do, Danaher taking simulation offline for a minute. Here we go. The captain and I have been in a similar hot spot on Devil's Rock two years ago. Here let me show you its still in the Captain's data log.” She opens up several files recovering battle videos from the attack and defense of the unit at that time. “Even though it was a zero atmosphere rock, we had to hide in caves as heavy naval destroyers and battleships flooded the sky'. Most of the fighting was done in the network and canyons.”

“Command, Itchy here, we are doing inventory as we speak. I know for a fact we have a few steaks we ain't using and a pile of medium lasers. I'll get back with you on the rest but we might be able to rig one shot Charlies”.

”Itchy, Isabel here, we can make launch tunes with ash and water with some oil drums. The missiles have their own power source for guidance.”.

”Itchy Gotcha lassy, I Gotcha. “ Itchy returned to his search.

”command, forward watch says all clear at entrance to cavern. Ravine operations, spots a thermal shadow of a possible heavy walker on an indirect path.”

“They must be scanning the area, tell them to keep their heads down and go to low power settings.”

“Aye, ma'am, “

After a few more minutes engaging in the plans. Forward ops called back.

“It's heading straight for us, repeat it's heading. ….” the mic goes dead causing all that heard it to drop to their stomachs. Dead silence began to sicken the crew as the first operations out in the unknown is beginning to look grime. But then the ops personnel's mic opens back up. “It's one of ours, I repeat. Confirm Bushwacker on point coming in fast and hard. Over”

“Thank God, keep an eye out for the other. Over,”

“We'll Do ma'am” as the operators celebrate with a sigh of relief.

“It's not over yet, something is wrong. Why did he come in so hard and noisy? And where is the captain?” asked the Gunnery Sergeant. “ Captain Zorivich wouldn't have let him come in so fast unless there was a problem. I'm going to ride over to the Dock and debrief Avery. I need one of the infantry commanders to meet me there. Danaher, I'm unlocking your mech and want you to stand guard with passive radar at the exit toward the canyon. I'll be back and maybe in a hurry. “
“Yes ma'am logging in now. Setting system to relay with roamers. Danaher Out.” you could hear the mechs startup cues in the background as the mic fades away.

”Itchy says he'll have production plans in an hour for the I.E.D.s. Hopper has suited up and is minutes behind you. Mobike one designated for your use.” Kova taking care of protocol match for match showing great poise of leadership. “Spader is on call coordinating currently with the volunteers. She said to keep her posted and keep up the work. “

Isabel Ramerez jumps over the mechanized motorbike and gears up as fast as she could to zigzag through the small tunnel. Within a short time she came out the opening to the base camp of the infantry recon operations. She slips of the bike and rushes to the Dock office carved from the backdrop of the dock area.

“Report!” She declared to the infantry Lieutenant on sight.

”Major William halter has moved forward as the Bushwacker is on its way down to the dock. He's carrying Inferno heavy missiles and ballistics to the ridge above the gorge. The mech is around the bend ma'am. “

“ Heat up some food and drink the three in there has had a long day. Be Ready upload their datalog as soon as he shuts down. Get command working on compiling the scans. I want fresh eyes every two hours reporting every 19 clicks on the clock.. Any break in the pattern will result in a full alert. NO second guessing.”

“Itchy wanted me to tell you he has found a dozen pulse turrets with independent drivers. “ Hopper making a grand entrance nearly breathless as the Bushwacker comes into view behind him. Ned said we might be able to make some scarecrows with cement metal scrap armed with some weapons.”

“That's a good idea, we can move them into positions with the hover pad and his tractor. He's backing in. Watch it.”

As the mech's cockpit hatch opens, the two passengers climbs down first being careful not to fall or trip over each other. Sergeant Avery begins to deploy his Datalink and put his mech into recovery mode just in case he needs to go full active. He then proceeds to follow his guest down to the dock office to debrief.

“What happened out there and where is the captain? ” Ramerez and the Lieutenant both asked at the same time.

“Pardon me ma'am, getting ahead of myself”

“No problem, Avery what happened?”

“We was completing our last survey of a third forward canyon operations are after scanning three eastern areas. As we spotted another mining rig, the Captain's passive sensor locked on a long range radar target of can active srm turret that was not stationary out side visual range. Then we both detected mech power ups due north of his position. We was ordered to evade and retreat as it was his equipment that triggered a hostile response. Captain uploaded his database as we scurried on back here. He said if im followed to set mech for auto attack with a final overload. That's the last I heard from him. “

“Okay, let's not be so hasty as of yet. If the do come we have to make a bigger show as a diversion should we have to evacuate the cavern and use whatever data you and the Captain collected to our advantage. I hope. ”

“I'll head back to Headquarters once the logs are complete. If Widdle and his sister wants to come back have two soldiers escort them through the passage. “

“ Thanks, give me an hour or two. I'm going to switch up the mobike and walk up to the nest to follow up with the forward positions myself. Any immediate threat I'll be back faster than you can blink”

“don't want two warriors missing in action. Do we?” Sarcastically the Commander sited.

“We don't get lost that easily, Commander. “
More than three hours past as Ramerez checked every outpost personally and reassuring the men and women that the Captain is smarter than some old genetic reject of clanner. In actuality, she is worried as she thought, just a few weeks earlier, she had lost her friend and odds are not in his favor to pull another Wint-van-Winkle again. When she felt like it was safe, she called to lower the alert then returned to base. Looking out into the dark night ash one last time praying either for grace or glory for her captain and Ivana.

Meanwhile, earlier that day after the captain orders his wingman to evade then finding a place to hide. The captain and Ivana started to search the mining office for anything that could help them in their parel. Blueprints, sketches, drawings or maps anything useful at most. ”Here, a semantic of the radio grid for the mining platforms and network.” Ivana unfolds the plans on the desktop. As they both reviewed the details she noticed a binder which contained within programming codes and tweaking techniques into the upper bands of the spectrum.

“If a can get this mines secondary satellite dish to point to the main dish of the next mining rig then we can link to it and set it's secondary to another then have it point back to the one between us. Then the middle points back at us creating a loop loop at our desired frequency. We just might be able to match my sensors bandwidth which would positively fool anyone who wants to look for it. ”

“Consider a non rhythmic pattern as it would look like erratic com chatter as we program the redundant systems for each we have discovered. This way we can use short range radio up to about 2 kilometers without someone taking notice. As more rigs join the network. The more movement we can do.”

“ Not bad, you have been watching those videos carefully. Might make a Mechwarrior out of you yet. Don't think your father will approve. But he's not here.”

“Yeah, he is always implying us children to be eloquent and proper. Most of our lessons have been more infused etiquette than straightforward facts.”

“In my years dear, even the facts can be wrong. Why I'm still around I think. I've been only a Mercenary in House Liao for five years. Let me bring up the power to the plasma drill so it can mask our heat and give a little warmth tonight.”

“I don't know if I can get any rest tonight, just two weeks ago we was being shot at and today we are playing peek a boo.”

Suddenly a Crack of thunder which nearly caused Ivana to jump clear through Gabriel. After her heart stopped racing she began to laugh to the point of crying just before another one put her back on her toes. But then they felt it as the mines seismic monitor began to register a impact wave. They both but back on their helmets on then sighted their weapons peicering into the night ash.

”If we are about to have company, don't fire til I do. Aim for the weapons pod then move to a different position. Try to move around without being noticed. Your suit won't take a direct hit but will protect you from shrapnel and residual heat generated from lasers. Missiles and ballistics are what to worry about most as they will punch big holes into our cover. The drills will hide our heat making it hard to track. If it rains we may have a chance to get out of this as this is the first rain since the eruption. It's going to be toxic plus when you add water to volcanic ash you get cement or plaster.”

In the distance a lone image could barely be seen through the rifles Thermal scope. ”It's a Raven” he implies as another one then another and finally a fourth of the flock from hell joins up just outside of visible range. They start pecking around as the Captain notices it was starting to rain causing the ash to slowly settle.

“They better get those birds under wraps before this crap seeps into every nook and cranny of this mechs. ”

“Why's that, Captain? ”

“This is volcanic rain. It's very coorodsive and the ash hardens like rock as it get wet then dries. It gets messy to clean up and can destroy machines like those. These mining platforms are made to withstand all sorts of hazardous conditions. Even can be used as space refuge.”

“Gabriel, then panel behind us is beeping a different sound.” Ivana noticed a few lights flickering, too.

”What, the birds are diverting to the west. Let me check that control node. “

“What is it?” still having her sights fixed on the Last Ravens rear armour panel. ” why are they moving out?”

“Looks like an emergency switch has been triggered.” curiously the captain goes over every detail noticing that the rig they are at is beginning to deploy what appears a third but smaller dish as the other two are set for other purposes. ”Check one of those binders for a fault code definition. Looks like code 359”

Ivana moves from her position keeping a fix outside in the direction that the Ravens fled to. Setting her rifle down and opens her visor to read through a few binders where she found the code “It's a hard ore indicator, it reads here that when a drill hits hard material greater that the set parameters of the drill head can cause a heat spike, empl burst and an Ion density field. The code alerts other rigs to get any operators in the region to calibrate manually on sight.” a bolt of lightning struck the canyon wall behind her and she leaps over the desk and Captain Zorivich catches her.

"You gotta calm down before to hurt yourself or put a gap in our shelter. ” he laughs as she is a bit embarrassed not only for being skittish but also being embraced gently by the Captain.

Meanwhile back at the ravine base, Sargeant Ramerez returns to the dock just in time to notice a storm rolling in. She quickly heads to the dock office to have the commutation operator to prepare for the storm.

”Notify all field units to take cover. This storm will probably produce toxic corrosive rain. Not only that the wet ash hardens like cement and will immobilized and machines. “

“Aye, ma'am. All units stand down and batting down. Code brown. Repeat take cover.” the young Corporal chatted away as the Mechwarrior rides through the tunnel back to Headquarters. Once she got there. Itchy and Jules met her as she exited.

”Gunny, the civilians had came up with an idea. They want to use our spare parachutes to create a false wall at the entrance using ash and water. But it would require putting a modul at risk as it scaffolding stretched up to secure to the ceiling. At a distance the tunnel would be hidden.”

“We went over inventory. We have plenty of ideas using mountable weapons for either trip shots, mines and a few stationary emplacements. But if we have to cut and run. We'd have to leave them behind. We also made two scarecrows and already put them in place backing young Danaher up if he had to fall back while you was gone.”

“Sergeant Avery Summit should have been here awhile ago, where did he get off to?” the Gunny inquired.

“He went to show Danaher the scanning technique he and the Captain used to collect data from the patrol. Young Widdle said first thing in the morning he wants to take a salvage crew out to the tower they discovered and to check the first satlink he installed. I Said it's up to you on that risk. ”

“We have a storm brewing out there. He's going to have to wait to a break to try for it. But he needs to rest. I'll be in Hq.”

“Yes ma'am. Itchy and I have been in and out of there all evening. “

The Gunnery Sergeant steps into a chatter box of activity. Hopper and Spader buried deep in the halo map as each bit unfolds revealing more details of the North territory and the abundance of resources that might be able to adapt and salvage. They really way to concentrate on the last data file from Captain Zorivich’s mech reading before the the contact.

”What do we have so far? ” Ramerez asks concerningly. “What did the Captain stumble upon?”

“So far we have determined a fix location plus a few helpful structures. The data is incomplete on the last position as it's decoyed and being rendered as we speak. What we can tell though, a srm turret was mobile as was the mech power ups. This suggests that this” ad Spader points to an easterly position not less than fifteen kilometers from the magno-rail highway they used would have came through if they hadn't need to seek refuge from the volcanic eruption. “I believe that is why we got reports from the tanks about that local area.
.
”Ok I see. Look here, see that area of missing data near that mining rig. That's missing data that's a cave. With a crouch, that Uller may fit but can't tell how far in. A storm is brewing making it treacherous for machine nor man to be out in it. The captain would be able to disguise his signature with the electronics of that machinery. HE'S no fool to take on an unknown force by himself. Captain only take a risk he knows he can get out of. “

“Only time will tell. Here we go. Yup looks like an independent rail criss-cross on the far north of these network of canyons. We have a dump of scrap metal here. Those dump trucks might have parts we can use for the hydraulics of the Modul. The scrap might turn up something. That rail looks like it goes to a major metropolitan area according to Apple Cove’s library. But right there beside the rail looks like a creat depot. Might turn up some an item of interest.” Hopper loads a tablet with a portion of the datalog and goes off to contemplate. Spader inquires about the com tower and the mines connection as the only real hope is to contact friendly forces off world to get to safety relieved or reinforcements. They don't even know they exist together down here.

Back at the mine where Ivana Koche and Captain Zorivich has settled in as the storm rages on. The metal structure whines abit as the toxic oxydizing rain weakens the outer hull and the blows from the wind rocks the platform. Each taking up a couch to rest on. The two lay there not really sleeping but wondering.

Ivana begins to inquire about her host on his life story, “Why did you want to be a Mercenary and how come you was able to join a Cappellan Confederation unit?”

“We'll that is a long story but I'll try to make it short and still be interesting. My father was born in the Cappellan Confederation. His entire family is House Liao. When he came of age he turned down an Academy Appointment and went as far as his savings could get him. He ended up on Apol near the outer realm of House Marik. There he met my mother whose family was farm folk. That region of space has a lot of agriculture planets, moons and asteroids. My father took a job with the local magistrate's office which was a regional manager of dozens of worlds. Which needed law enforcement and keepers of the peace like Marshals with deputies. Well my father had a neuro-link surgery when he was little that was still experimental called the Alaya-Mijnana spinal neuro-link system. It's a very adaptive system that reduces feedback plus it frees up the head for more movement when tracking a line sight target. Plus several medical benefits that normally you get from a head connection issue. As my father got more established he married my mother and bought a farm of their own while he still kept his deputy post. I have brothers and sisters me being the middle child of five. As the farm grew my siblings took up farming but I wanted to be with dad. As the regional Marshall retired, Dad was given the post by the circuit judge and was given his first Battlemech. An old raider Jenner, but a Marshall is not only a law officer but a bounty hunter in those parts so he made money and traded salvage from planet to planet with the circuit Dropships going wherever he was called. When a Major Surgeon came close to our region of space got kidnapped by some orion pirates, dad went to his rescue. The nobleman doctor asked if there was anything he could do to repay him it would be granted. Dad being humble, he only asked that I can get the same Alaya-Mijnana system he has. That was a hard request as the system research stopped during a war as the funds was diverted to the approved implants as the need for pilots was great. About two months went by when the Surgeon showed up on my homeworld with gifts for my family and I. That's when I got my first link installed. ”

“Your first link, how many do you have? And how did the noble get his hands on the technology? ” curiously she asks.

With a grin he replied, “ it was the same reason I got to where I am now. My great uncle is on House Liao parliament staff. He was, at the time, an archive manager supervisor. When a request from outlander sources for the exact system my father had, he contacted the noble to see the reason why he needed it. My father has not been in contact with House Liao for two or three decades. So the family get notified that one of their presumed lost children pops on the radar, they was more than happy to get the news. They sent the nobleman surgeon before them as they made arrangements to join up. My father received a new hunchback variant, a title, and his first planetary deed along with the first of three surgeries for me. My siblings only wanted normal ones.”

“Planetary deed? Three surgeries! And a big family reunion? You said first deed?

”Yes, ended up owning ten eventually. I wounded up owning six of them. After a few years and many adventures I won my first mech in salvage of a Mercenary run that was hired to disrupt trade in the systems next to our region. The leadership we captured wouldn't give up the names of their employers but when it was determined that they was caught. That leadership gave up their salvage stash with mechs given to them to do the job. That's why I like that Uller. It's very similar to the Adder.”

“Wait a minute, Adder isn't that clan technology? How old was you when you got your implant? Your history doesn't make sense. “

“I was almost seven. The Alaya-Mijnana system is best installed at a young age and recovery was just a few months. Once the software is integrated, learning became easy I got a master's degree at age ten and a PhD at age twelve. Usually did classes in between jumps from world to world. I saved my earnings and elected a Comstar account doing stock market trades and research. Made real estate transactions here and there till a few Planetary Banks and Lenders belly uped during a four year market recession. This is where I picked up my own first two worlds with holdings on several more resulting in over half the planets systems property being a part of my portfolio. Now the Adder was from the far reaches of Kuritian Space where we know now how the Clans moved into Innersphere territory. The light and medium mechs of unknown origin and design was in caches al through many regions as pirates would come out of nowhere with them in their holds. The employer of the Mercenaries got a few as valuable prizes they couldn't use as all clan chassis have a trap with use of traditional neuro-link systems. The alaya is not directly linked to the brain plus has many feedback prevention redundancy. That why Echo Company has them installed for all units. They Cappellan council allowed the rights to be sold to loyal units for resend development. My father kept in touch after the reunion that built Laketon And established a Liao facility as an independent contractor. I met my wife at the Agricultural Summit of a hundred world's there.”

“So you are married? Your family was able to convince House Liao to invest in New Avalon space. And they built a city. This is unreal. “

“I was married till our children decided to move off and seek their own destiny's choice. Most are farmers of large fresh systems others are cube processors like my worlds. My father past away as my youngest daughter went to Kuritian Space for five year training at age twelve. She wants to be an assassination specialist. I said go for it. The new magistrate thought it was conflict of interest that we own most of the region we patrolled so he had a new Marshall elected and I was no longer a deputy. That's when my Great Uncle Ulysses said to make my way to Liao space he could have a great job lined up by the time I was arrived. I secured my holdings and took my mechs I thought I needed most plus renting a mech create you have three slots plus donage for a few hundred tons of equipment. I was a few month into the journey where my wife filed divorce abandonment though we discussed the long term travel and separation. But I guess she changed her mind. She tried to get half my holdings but only got a lump sum of C-Bills and a small agro-moon where she moved to. My sister moved in to take care and grow her family on my homestead. I get profits from both agricultural and industrial applications from home. I traveled for a while to make it to Liam space. I bartered my service as a pilot with my own mechs using the unit mechs only where needed. I met with the General of Echo Company and the Independent Alliance Forces of house Liao on one of the missions and said I was heading to Liam Central to meet with my family who lives there.i finally arrived only to find out the Commanding Officer was the one I hitched a ride with. O started out as a buck Sergeant as I was already a good pilot. I kept up my habits investing and took up property all over this region that I got offers for just before the invasion. I will know once I get out of this mess if it was a good move. Ivana? “ he looks over and she was fast asleep as he stretched one last time and off to sleep he went. Only woken once as Ivana had come over to get warmth by laying by his side.he cuddles her with his arms and fell into a deep sleep.
