First that the attackers have effectively dominated this planet.
2) There's people in the attack queue ready to attack one of the last two three remaining strongholds held by the defenders.
3) There's no one defending said facility, so the attacker commander is having tea time.
4) Given the grim state of the planet, it is unlikely anyone will come to defend it during this attack phase, best to wait til after the cease fire to play again.
5) The 'shield' square is the match currently about to play. This also suggests as the screenshot taker you are defending?
6) In Battletech, the planet would be considered a lost cause and any defending forces still remaining will be trying to pull out and leave to salvage what little strength they have left into the next defense.
7) In MWO...this screen usually invites any solitary player waiting and hoping for a match.. only for that player to find the forums and complain about waiting over 45 minutes for a match rather than a matter of seconds to minutes.

In other words, this planet is effectively defeated and a lost cause.

Wait: 8) That the maps you encounter will look nothing like this awesome looking planet atmosphere with its wonderful green and black clouds over a tan surface.

Bear with me, because I haven't been doing much Faction Play recently.Like Kon says, the squares are control points - red for the attacker, and blue for the defender - and it ain't looking good for the home team.

A solid square means that the control point is uncontested; there's no match going on. A shaded point is being fought over (the amount of shading is how long the match has progressed) - and of course the icon (which can be a target reticle, if you are attacking that point) is the point you are waiting to drop into and defend.

The two rows of arrows are the queues of people waiting to get into matches on the planet, while the two larger arrows on either side of the planet are teams actually waiting for the point you're dropping on - think of them as the front of the line.

So you can tell a few things about what's going on with the planet at a strategic level:
  • there are three teams defending this world
  • there are four teams attacking
  • six total teams are actually in matches or about to be
  • there's one team waiting in the wings
  • either the bulk of the attacking force has gone to do other things, or else the defenders have been getting consistently beaten
So the home team isn't doing so hot, though you can't tell why this is so. It could be that there used to be a lot more people fighting earlier on in the attack cycle; the enemy teams could just be consistently beating all the defenders, or the defenders might be making a comeback. Heck, it could even be that some defender teams are better, but are/have been dragged down by less-skilled players on their own side - look at the First Tukayyid statistics and ask yourself: "who would have won if the Davion players didn't exist?" (trolololololol.)

Mkay, there are definitely some changes from the phase 2 version then. After reading Void's post I do see some unusual things that Void cleared up.

So Queue is now groups waiting to for opponents to fight (game used to seem to only allow one fight at a time per world but with so many worlds opened to each faction there was always more places to fight than groups of players willing to fight, and thus if the queue was loaded that'd be fights waiting to take place).

The fights in progress is interesting, it shows the progress of the battle and which way it may be going. This kind of thing could actually open some opportunities for PGI to have on-going fights affect other fights.. We'll see how that turns out.

So the planet isn't as hopeless as it looks (I haven't played in regular matches in Phase 3 more than two or three times; the obscene absurdity of the Long Tom as a tactical nuke capable of doing many thousands of damage (total) to all targets within 30 meters of the blast when the ammo is 10 shots per ton kinda disgusted me).

How do you get 6 teams are in drops or waiting to drop?

Gods forbid PGI ever actually explain their own game to the player base
