It generally has MASC, and would be given structure quirks based on it's description.
So? It still serves the same basic purpose as the Locust, which is basically "Cheap, fast recon/anti-infantry mech". Meanwhile, you have something like the Howler, which serves a very different purpose and in the context of the mech would actually be quite fun to play, since it isn't a rehashed Locust.

*puts 3 LRM-5's on locust*
What was that about rehashed?

Oh I thought you guys were talking in terms of MWO? If we're talking about pure BattleTech then yeah, a lot of 20 tonners share huge similarities.

Even when talking MWO, the vast majority of 20 tonners are basically Locust retcons. The Howler is pretty much the only exception.

The howler is pretty much a locust with a PPC. Which I have used.
There are two 20 ton mechs, locusts, and Wasp/stingers. What sets them apart is the jump jets. WHile the locust is fast, the wasp is highly mobile. Every thing else is a reconfiguration of those two.

Except, they still fit into one of the Locust's two purposes. The one they match up with is "Cheap scout unit". Meanwhile the Howler is meant as a light Long-range support craft.

Perhaps not, but my point is those 20t LRM carriers are worthless, pointless, wastes of tonnage.
Ehhhhhhhhh, Howler would beg to differ. 20 tons, three CLRM5s, a ton of ammo per launcher, 140 STD, and no advanced tech, thus making it relatively easy to get. Plus, once you start going crazy with upgrades (Endo, XL engine, ect.), you can do some truly magical things with that mech. LRM 30 on a 20 tonner that runs as fast as a Cheetah, while not being a walking roadsign? Why not? ASRM 18 with tons of ammo to spare? Sure, go ahead.
