We plan on installing keggerators, so wiring up the cockpit for sound isn't all that difficult.
Sure, I'm in for it.

this should not be an option. it´d be just "food for the Trolls". (and i think there´ll be enough they can troll with)
so:
In-Mech MP3 - yes, please!
Outside - well, no.
although i´d have fun annoying my enemies with things like the Nyan Cat song or something like that, but that´d only last a few matches.
so i rather annoy my Teammates by singing along with my music while Teamspeak is set to voice activation instead

I shure hope they stay as far away from stuff like that as possible. As cool as it might sound at the start: the music business is a legal minefield (adding to the legal minefield that seems to be battletech..)
If they would allow for uploading your "own" music they would be shut down faster than you can say napster.
If they only allow some sort of control scheme to play music on your computer: how could they know that you have not downloaded this music illegaly? If they wouldnt make shure they may also be held accountable.
I seriously hope the only music in this game is:
1. made by the devs themselves
2. on their own instruments
3. that they invented themselves (with no resemblance to any other instruments today to avoid legal issues)
4. has not been influenced by any music from the last 300 years (just to be on the safe side).
When it comes to music and law, much like quantum physics, the question seems not to be if its crazy.. but if its crazy ENOUGH.

1. You wouldn't need to 'upload' any music, it wouldn't hog any bandwidth, it would play off your local music folder (or folder you specified).
2. You would NOT be subjected to other players' weird and wonderful choices of music. This is MWO not Croyden, you aren't going to get mechs cruising around with their cockpits open and some heavy drum and bass blasting out. Where did people dream up this stuff?
3. I would imagine it would be entirely optional and PGI would most likely have their own musical scores for the game to create the right atmosphere and engage players.
4. The argument that you could just open iTunes in the background is entirely logical, can't fault it. You could also have a radio or CD player. Personally I like to play in fullscreen mode, I don't like having other unnecessary programs running in the background and I tend to jump around my music library a lot - yeah you can use playlists but even then I can get bored of the playlist. If I had a MP3 system incorporated and rooted to my music library I could pick and choose music as I pleased with no alt-tabbing. Also, I'm too lazy to get up and change CDs
Similar things have already been done in games like EVE Online and it works extremely well (although you do have to drop the music directly into EVE's music folder but if you've ever spent a significant amount of time mining asteroids you know you really NEED that MP3 player, it's a god send for long flights). Hell in EVE there's even a built in web browser (not suggesting that here) and can stream EVE Radio/podcasts.
I'm not saying all this is a must, I'm sure PGI is very busy making sure the game mechanics are spot on so we have fun blasting each other etc, but it would be a nice and feasible feature - it just depends on how much coding time it would take to incorporate it. I wouldn't want them devoting time on this when there might be more pressing things to do. It's a nice to have, not a must have.

I don't know, coordinated Highway to Hell would be awesome. I'm like most other people and can only vaguely remember one Danzig song though, could we comprimise on Dio? Or Brocas Helm or KMFDM.
Seriously though, does no one else remember Battlefield Vietnam allowing you to play music out of any vehicle you hopped into? There was something magical about doing Napalm Runs to "War" by Edwin Starr when the enemy team would look to the sky trying to find the source of the music. Then again, it only worked on the music already in the game, so meh.
Seriously though, it needs to be an item you can buy to decorate your cockpit. I want random things stuck to bare bits of metal, I want to paint the alpha strike button bright red with a bullseye. I want the eject button to be changed to read something more vulgar. Not that it matters since it wouldn't fly, but I would totally drop an SRM-6 from a Stalker or the SRM-4 from the Jenner for a massive speaker. It would probably be safer to drive anyway.
