K2 is not really that good unfortunately. The whole IS heavies are really, really underwhelming and bad. Even Grasshopper and Warhammer really fall short compared to good Clan heavies unless specific situations.
I also would say Hellbringer as the first choice... but it is a bit more expensive and the hardpoints are not that high (still high, but not as high as my first choices)
The majority of the problems of new players are not being able to do enough damage. Hardpoints make huge difference for them.
Edit : now think about it, the some of the Hellbringer's hardpoints are actually quite high.
Don't agree with you about the Warhammer. Does laser vomit, ppc's, gauss and other ballistics incredibly well. Clan tech may have the advantage over it in many situations but even after nerf it is much more durable than an Ebon or Hellbringer.
The other thing is that new players used to be pointed towards mediums such as the Hunchback which helped people learn good habits in the game. While the Hellbringer is great, I don't think it is that good of an idea to start off in. Maybe when the rule of three is gone.
Still think mediums such as Huntsman or Hunchie IIC for clan new players or Hunchies for IS guys. these all are priced well to get three and will help people learn the basics like torso twisting.

It works fine with a standard engine.
It's unbelievable sturdy and hard to kill.
You can play laser vomit, missile boat and a god mix of both.
Perfect mech for a beginner.
Not too expensive to equipe and easy gameplay.
And as second buy a ballistic plus laser mech.
Marauder (or Marauder IIC) or Shadow Hawk.
Concentrate on 75 to 85 kg mechs.
Seems to be the sweet spot between speed, armour and weapons.
That's how I would recommend to start the game.
AND!!!!! Use smurfys mechlab befor you invest in the game.

Hear, hear.
I'd say Stormcrow:
- Fast
- Extremely versatile (you can build a laser vomit machine, a LRM-boat, a ballistic ... thingy)
- Broken hitboxes make it extremely durable and newbie-mistake-forgiving.
Only downside is that you can't experiment with JJs.

There are those mean people (like myself) who always focus an HBR's LT, meaning 2/3 of all his weapons AND his ECM will drop in seconds and after that, it's more less a fat crippled light Mech.
Very frustrating for new players.
They would have to "start" with perfect torso twisting to prevent that.

The Centurion family offers some different flavors of weapon types. It also really encourages torso twisting and positioning. Two really good skills to get down quickly.
The Hunchback family offers good diversity of variants, it also really encourages good marksmanship and sheilding skills. Two good skills to get down quickly....

Newbies will be mostly grouped with people who can't even shoot straight--at least not with people who are T1. Besides, Hellbringer can be played with UACs and missiles on the other torso.

As someone who is an avid Cent player, I have them all, they are hard mode right now. With the nerfs to SRMs and the constant poke and snipe of heavier mechs, getting close to brawl is very difficult.

The Mad Cat is a great mech BUT it cost a lot. If you do not plan to buy mech pack at the beginning (because you do not know if you will continue playing) you will be forced to play with the same mech over and over. Timbie are about 15 Mil C-Bills each...

While you are at making the new players experience with this game terrible, you might want to suggest using single heatsinks aswell, because it really teaches new players to manage their heat.
Verdict: Stop recommending subpar mechs to new players. NPE is bad enough as it is.

For earning money to buy the stuff, Arctic Cheetah prime. You will need to earn CBills for the heavier mechs. The 6-8 million you get by the end of the tutorials spends pretty fast.
