This.
Or more precisely:
A crate with a common chance 50 MC reward is VERY lucrative. The key costs 25 MC and you have a pretty high chance to get 50 MC back. Or something more valuable.
I have a simple rule:
Only open stuff with direct MC rewards in it. I even got the 1000 MC reward once and you can finance a LOT of keys (I know: 40) with that.
Anything else, that doesn't have at least 3 really interesting things in it (MC, keys and mechbay if you need them) goes directly into the CB-recycler.
Those that Derek sold with 50 MC and 3x Keys were actually pretty lucrative. It was a waste to sell them.
Guess you just gotta understand how probability works. No way around that.
+1 to this.
I open probably 20% or less of the crates, but the ones I do I am willing to buy keys for (PGI has stopped passing out keys on most events now). I follow the simple thought process of trying making back my MC (through winning MC, keys or mechbays) and then some.
1. 50 MC is a common and wins a lot it seems. If you have 2 common items and 50 MC is one of them.. open it. You generally won't lose MC over time doing this and it is a free shot at the rarer items, mechbays,Mechs
2. If it's 500 or 1000 MC open it. I haven't hit those yet....but the risk/reward is worth far more than the sure 50k c-bills for selling
3. If it has 2 commons that aren't the 50 MC, don't bite (unless it has the huge MC amounts as a rare chance)...you are nearly certainly going to get those jump jets or that omnipod arm
