So....I'm still pretty new and loving this game! (used to play it on CD rom......there goes the age thing....)
Anyway, I went against the grain so to speak (for a new player) and bought the Super Nova standard bundle with the Hero add on. I am trying to step outside my comfort zone with this and challenge myself.
I have the BSW-X2, NVA-S, SCR-PRIME, HBR-PRIME, RFL-5D, all of which I enjoy.
I didn't realize though, how slow this actually is. A large enough turtle might beat me a 100 ft crawl.

So my question is, what would be some of the tactics involved with this kind of vehicle.
I know I can't rush in. I also know that I get A LOT of attention.

The SNV-A is a LRM boat, would that be more practicable? (given it's speed).

Thanks to all for any insight. (This was just to tempting to pass up not getting!)

Mike.

With slow assaults you have to be aware of your position all the time. Try to move with the other assaults. Don't think you are invincible as an assault, still keep around cover. And if your team pushes try to be around the front to share your high armor.

Try not to hide in the back where your armor is wasted just so you can snipe around. Should you take LRMs this also applies. Personally I hate using LRMs most of the time as I have the tendency to hide then.

Of course, if you end in a nascaring fast team you might just be left behind. Happens sadly.

Thanks. I try to keep up. And boy, do I know I'm not invincible! (haven't seen that many rockets hit me before!)
I always try to keep with the crowd. I will keep trying, thanks for the advice.

Lrms can be really effective. For IS lrms fire them between 200m and 400m for a mostly flat trajectory. For a little bit of an arc, fire them around 500 or so meters. It works great for firing over your friendlies but still hitting the enemy that they are focusing on.

if you have the cbills I strongly recomend swapping out the stock engine for an XL 325, the Supernova cannot be fast but it can do 58 with max engine (62 after speed tweak)

if you plan on going LRM boat I know 20s are tempting but you will get more damage with the smaller launchers because the missiles spread out less, and the smaller launchers have a faster rate of fire, something like 4 LRM15 with 2 Large pulse lasers and a TAG would give you a good ammount of damage potential with the LRMs, the TAG helps you get locks, the Large Pulse mean you can keep firing at mid range if you run out of ammo (I recomend 8-12 tons, and see how often you run out, if never take less, if frequently take more, I aim to run out of ammo about 1 game in 4, if I am not running out I have too much), and mean you are not helpless up close (but still stick with the team)

Also if you are taking lock on weapons, especialy if they are your primary weapon, make sure to take an Active Probe so a single enemy ECM cannot shut down your main weapon system.

a lot of people are not happy to see assualt LRM boats, the reason for this is that your ability to take damage is just as important as your damage output, and it takes twice as much damage to take a Mech down with LRMs that it does with other weapons (unless the LRMs are chain fired LRM5s, those are pretty effective at killing Mechs rather than just getting high damage numbers) and if your armor is not with the main group the Mechs which are good at getting kills will not last as long.
If you stay with the group and work with the team your allies should have nothing to complain about.

Sorry, bro. You picked a bad mech for a beginner.

You are big, slow, and usually a Lazerboat so also usually hot.

As for playing a slow Assault?

Positioning and Timing are life. Learn to accept you will be left behind. If getting circled by a Light, dont turn in circles. Either put your back to a wall. Or turn a half circle, then turn the other way to catch him coming back around and burn the Light's LEGS off.

If things go bad, YOLO, because you cant really run away, right?

There is an art to know when to 'Release the Kraken'. You want to hang in the MIDDLE of you team(as much as possible in Solo).
You want to learn the choice firing lanes on maps and have ideas on how to counter them. Hang near terrain so you can hide when on cooldown.

if you lag behind, you become Light food.

If you are up front, you are either leading a push or will be a punching bag- you are too slow to get out of harms way.

Try to hang with Dire Wolves, Atlas, and other slow Assaults. Use cover and try to be close to terrain.

You will have to advance often, more than you think, just to keep up with the murder ball.

Ask for team help early, but dont expect anything. And if you do get some escort help, dont be a pansy sitting in the back unless its long range trade time - but remember to advance so you can keep up.

Now... if you get caught in a NASCAR and left behind. You have 2 basic options:

Cut across towards the middle of the map and try to meet back up with the team(USE COVER AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE)

Or, fall back and hide until the enemy team zooms by, pray no lights see you, power back up, and rear core the best target and expect to get killed. this is likely a better option on maps that encourage NASCAR -Caustic, Frozen City, late match Forrest Colonoscopy, top center of HPG, top of Grim, etc.

As for builds:

Please dont LRM-boat. It stymies skill, inflates damage for your PSR, and doesnt teach how to trade. its initial appeals are illusory.

If your at the back end with a slow assault in a nascar you can also try this; Turn and face the other team, running at them. Shoot out/at their legs and hope to leg a few. Never stop moving though them, they'll stop to try and kill you an with good luck your team will come up on them and maybe even save your butt.

Change the engine. You can make it go faster.

Myself I just bought one too the other day. So I'm also learning how to use it. Will share what I can soon as I can.

Doh! I forgot about the engine swap. It does make a difference, even without the speed tweak.

Thanks for reminding me.

You're welcome.
So on a budget since I lacked cbills, I took the main one (6 LL) and changed it to 8 SPL, shoved in a 315 std engine (I had one handy) and I made four kills before getting triple teamed. Felt pretty awesome. The close range requirement and such doesn't help, however. Just made it fun because I was getting frustrated with long range play.

This is interesting. I wouldn't have thought about SPL on this, but I might give it a try. Do you have them grouped, or are they set up for chain fire?

I did some paying around with the Hero. Added a XL 325 engine (that in itself makes a huge difference!). Mounted 2 c-ac/2's, 3 c-streak srm 6's, c-ams with ammo, clan active probe, 1 double heat since and a boat load of ammo. I have the srm's set up for chain fire. The ac's I have on buttons 1 and 2, and use them like chain fire. Went 2 for 2, had a couple kills and survived both matches!! Going face to face was a lot of fun. Had good teams as well.
I too am getting tired of long range play.

AC2's on a SuperNova?? Sacrilege! ;)

Try twin LB20X's & then either ERSmalls or SRM4's in the shoulders. I have settled on 3 ERSmalls. That's an awesome brawler. If your c-bill poor buying those LB20X's is going to sting but you will be very happy you did after your 1st match.

I know right? Actually I only did that once. The rate of fire is good, but damage is
terrible.
I currently have 2 UAC10's, 3 med lasers, and 3 srm6's + art.
I may try the 20's tonight after work.
Thanks,

Mike.
