Why Call It "skills?"

Why do they call it skills? Are we leveling up in an RPG? It's honestly unimmersive and silly.

A better name is simply one of many such as: upgrades, tweaks, mods, modifications, new parts, auxiliary parts, auxiliary upgrades?

It would make more sense this way because a mech can only have so many "modifications" or "auxilliary part upgrades" before it needs a mechanic / engineer to work on it (A.K.A. respec it) again in the garage / mechlab.

Thanks for reading. Thoughts?

MechWarrior, at it's roots, is the RPG expansion for BattleTech.

Because it's been called skills since closed beta.

I don't disagree with your point, but per ForceUser, history is not on your side, so we're probably stuck with the term. Would have been nice for PGI to change the name as part of this overall change, but per other posts, "expect nothing and you won't be disappointed."

How is Armor Hardening a skill? No skill involved, ergo, not a skill tree; Mech Upgrade Perks, Perk Points and Perk Trees seem more appropriate.

More armor and stronger structure requires more skill to pilot when put on the same frame.

Point is, it's a fictional universe, anything can be explained.

That doesn't mean it can't be changed. Regardless of it's name I'll know it by it's effects.

Those are 'skillz' 'cause there is no in-Universe explanation why Mech manufacturers do produce Mechs which a simple tech can significantly upgrade literally on the battlefield.
If those are tweaks then why are Mechs not tweaked accordingly (for range or clip size) on the factory line?
If those are options then why there is cost for those options?
If those are enhancements then, again, why those were not done on the factory?

There are just too many too thing stretches over logic holes...
Actually, the skill can be left in the game (with slight ruduction to efficiency and removal of a node or two) and a new upgrade tree just installed over it with give-and-take principle introduces not in the form of 'limited number of nodes' but in literal (+X% to A characteristic -Y% to B caracteristic, like increase in firerate increase jam chance or shortens range).

Even then, the things we're upgrading would still be considered upgrades, enhancements or simply "Design_Quirks."

None of these have to do with Mechwarrior/BT's RPG "Skill" sets.

Those were things like technical know-how, piloting success chance increases, aiming improvements, improved underground contacts, prosthetic enhancements to improve reaction time (or a tail to assist in close combat), dual wielding firearms, hacking, etc.

Not 10% more torso twist range. That's a crappy version of the Design_Quirk called "Extended torso twist," a modification you can put on your mech if you traded its positive points for something with negative points of equal value or multiple bad things if they equaled the value.

Yep - when I read MWO Quirks for the first time I was totally hyped - until I realized that it was just anything else but "Design Quirks"
