I was hoping IS Orion pilots could report in and give me an idea of how the Orion is after the skill tree change. Did it get better? Which variants are the strongest? How does it compare to Warhammers, Marauders and such post tree change?

Thanks!

Well, Id say it's in better relative position but still it's nothing to write home about. The engine decoupling must have had a good impact in manoeuvrability but that's about it.

It can be a good brawler, but Onion-IIC is still better at the job.

IIC was always better. the C variant is just the most dominant variant out there. Mount Dual LB10s or Ultras and you can pound any heavy and most assaults into scrap metal. Added in SRMs for backups, and you have yourself a brawler.

By all means if you like a mech, play it for that. Honestly I like my IICs all in all, could never get into the regular Orion, that's just me.

I stripped my ON1 VA
so instead of rage quitting I sometime just go in and strip everything off the Mech
so I cant use it

Whether good or bad, I can't hate on the Orion. I still remember the first time I've seen one playing MechWarrior 3 in one of the earlier missions (I didn't get into the Battletech franchise as a whole until after MW4) and feeling helpless in the Bushwacker.

That being said, it's definitely a formidable mech in MWO currently depending on the variant and loadout. It's not as good as the IIC of course, but that's the point of Clan mechs in general compared to IS mechs... at least until the FedCom Civil War era when IS pretty much went "Screw you, Clans! We're going to build omnimechs too and kick your ***!" Thus, the beloved Sunder was born... along with some other mechs too.

I meant to post this in this thread, but put it in another by accident (where it was still fairly relevant):

I tried my Orion VA out, but not the others (own all the Orions except the Protector). Anyway, even with all the cooldowns I could snap up, it still doesn't have the RoF on missiles that it did with quirks and the old skill system. Still, it worked just fine. Granted, my VA is a bit of a mixed loadout. 300 standard engine, 2xML, 1xAC20, 4xLRM5. What's really going to be interesting is the timeline jump in about a month and a half, totally going for a light engine and probably a UAC20.

ON1-VA AC20 4SRM4+A brawler here, quirks nerf hit its dps considerably, universal cooldown nodes make its weapons even more out of sync. I took an all-in path in Survivability but its huge ST and lack of arm shielding just doesn't make it quite the tank it could be. Seismic Sensor is now a heavy commitment and if you want it, you have to forgo even more combat stats.

Overall, i think its in a worse state for brawling.

It's still a large mech that is easy to take apart despite the defensive quirks. It's a shame because I think it looks awesome.

I mastered the Orion a long time ago , its good for brawling and little else. Universal low hard points make trading a chore but up close its a faster atlas.

I took my M for a spin and it is still rigged out as a splatmaster with LBX and SRMs. I maxed out survival and boosted the crit chance of the missiles and the LBX spread.

It feels a bit more tanky than it used to be, but it still suffers from needing to be in the right situation to really use it's hardpoints and loadouts in the right manner. I tend to run escort for the assaults and treat it like that.

Why?

My ON1-VA is a beast with the Skill Tree. Tanks like a champ... and when it gets it's LFE in July? It'll be even better.
