Hello,

I am back in MWO first time since sometime in the beta. Lot's of new content I like it!

I got one question I was unable to find an answer so far:

In the mechlab under "loadout" when you open the mechstats (right bottom corner in expanded layout) there are Enhancements for that mech like "missile cooldown 15%".

I have Enhancements on all mechs although I have not yet spent any skillpoints and therefore no nodes active.

Where do these enhancements come from?

Thank you very much.

Some mechs have enhancements, or "quirks", as PGI calls them. They come from PGI in an attempt to acheive balance between mechs. Skill nodes add to those base quirks as selected.

Quirks.
Most of them are health related (structure and armor), some are mobility related. If the mech already has weapon-related quirks, however, it is an attempt to help the mech overcome some flaw it has. For example, some mechs have very few hardpoints and many players don't like that, because another mech of the same weight could probably carry twice as many weapons and still go the same speed. And so the weapon quirks are there to 'help' it.

These stack with the skill tree's nodes (as the skill tree's nodes are also 'quirks' in reality. So think about that when you go to 'skill' your mechs.

Note: Not all mechs have them. Though you may be fortunate enough that all the mechs you currently own possess them.

Thank you very much. What does quirk stand for?

a quirk means something diferant or unusual.

in this context they are an added feature for the Mech.

quirks in MWO can include extra armor or structure hitpoints, and improved performance for weapons, heatsinks or other equipment

Nearly all quirks are bonuses, something that improves the mech. On the skill tree change everything is now called enhancments in mechlab, previously they were called quirks, we still refer inherrent mech bonuses as quirks, which aren't coming from the skill nodes.

Few very rare omnimech pods can contain negative quirks, which give penalty to the mech. They are displayed in red, in contrast to green.

quirks Are adjustments...

very simple.. after the release of the chasis.. Or a release of something else that effect said chasis..

PGI went back and made adjustments to its stats...

So some mechs have armor changes or adjustments.. some have weapon or cooldown.. and some have acceleration and deceleration

The skill tree then lets you have your own set variable of adjustments that you can do .... making for a unlimited amount of combinations of mech setups

remember back in beta when lrms would come almost strait down on you.. at a 70degree angle? they adjusted that... same concept

While most ppl see quirks as "making up inherent flaws of a chassis" aka balancing they often are lore related to give the chassis a certain characteristic the chassis would not have due to pgi's form of implementation and interpretation of Battletech's rules and storys.
Battlemaster and Atlas for example are lorewise known for beeing extremely sturdy....the Battlemaster is also known to be handled quite easiely even by newer pilots.

There is that.. But they're doing it on the macro level rather than the micro. For example in Battletech only one Cataphract is known to be a tanking beast; it's the slowest cataphract with maximum stock armor and an imposed limit of a 255 engine so it is slower than mollasses.

But PGI's quirks gives that benefit to all the Cataphracts, even the ones that start with the weakest armor and have the most weapons. The ones with the greatest speed, whose engine capacity is 1.5X better. Of those, some are known for great ammo reserves. Some are known for great speed. Some are known for heat efficiency. So if that is the approach, I wish they'd look more into what the mech is supposed to be known for.

---------

The term quirk, while commonly used in games, was derived in this case from Battletech's Design Quirks. Though similarities quickly end as Design Quirks delve more into accuracy, flaws and some merits and it is always give and take; if you take X points in good quirks you must take X points in bad quirks.

MWO gives almost entirely good quirks. Which leads to power creep as PGI finally admitted (hence the new skill tree and a huge reduction in overall quirk values). Keep in mind quirks are subject to change at any time (usually during patches). Numbers higher than 75% when combing quirks and the skill tree are mistakes and so you can expect them to be quickly changed.

An example of this.
