Besides, the way some Brits and USians use English, I prefer anybody else's pronunciation for clarity's sake. And I live in Australia, so I've heard things.

2. No one used Indigo in any official military capacity ever in the history of warfare.

Just gonna ignore my post showing that they used it during WWII with the RAF? Okay then.

I mean if we're gonna have an internet war about this please don't cite "a story you heard" or "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy for Humans" or whatever that other one was. If you can show me a documented case of it then I'll gladly cede. Else go look up Able Baker.

The point of this post was to edumakate but apparently the internet is unteachable because three fourths of posters live under a bridge. Kthx, see you on the battlefield!

The whole purpose behind the phonetic alphabets is so that each letter has a very distinct sound, instantly identifiable with no confusion.

So, for the most part I don't mind whatever folks want to use, as long as I don't have to think about it (because I instantly know what is meant).

So, the thing that does bug me are when people simply say the letter. Bee, Cee, Dee, Eee, and Gee all sound too much alike folks, all the same vowel sound, and mics are notorious for eliding the very first sound people make (so you miss the consonant that would possibly differentiate). Oh, and using gamma for Gee (Golf), especially on conquest.

Also, I'm very guilty of using Indigo for 'I'.

Must have been difficult for you when he called indigo and your OCD wouldn't allow you to parse the obvious information due to what seems to be a mental block.

Whats easier? You assuming indigo stands for I, or making a fuss about it in the moment to try and ensure he uses your local understanding of nato phonetic in the future. The other alternative is, he just won't make calls if you are going to be a d about it.

I'm ex-military, and I don't give a rat's hindquarters if you use India, Indigo, Island, Ichabod, Instant, and so on. So long as the information is clear and people are communicating, I call it a big step in the right direction.

I have heard people claim the wrong word is delibriately used so that grid and call letter are not repeated in quick succession.

That seems like a lame excuse though. Target Golf Timberwolf, India nine is very clear in meaning and diction even with repeated descriptors.

Finally NATO has been in existence since 1949, how can one be familiar with more antiquated words than those used in popular culture and military circles in the last 70 years? At the very least it respresents a failure of mimicry on a variety of levels.

The only reasons to add extra time to characterising a single letter is so it becomes clearly audible and distinct from any similar sounding letters. N sounds a bit like M, but Mike won't get mistaken for November.

That is the purpose, so long as you can identify the letter, and not easily mistake it for another it is successful in its task.

The specifics of the call sign choices are a localised thing, much like how the guy above suggests there is distinction for player and grid. To me that makes sense to use proper names as target player letter call signs, and nouns as grid locations.

Target Nicole, vs Move to noodle five. But its pretty specific and I wouldn't expect people to just know that.

Also spheroid, the Quran has been around for thousands of years but are you familiar with its language and rhetoric to the point where you can reference it within a game to other randoms? The periodic table is pretty old, but can you name all the chemical elements correctly and then reference them as a side to a game system?

Thx for the overview. But in the heat of the fight I have problems remembering all of them correctly.
So expect to hear something like "Target Hentai!" or such from me Posted Image
