In this day and age, we all worry about our own safety. So I'm going to give two examples of readily available items in a specified situation and how they could be used.

Fire Extinguisher: Your basic carbon dioxide extinguisher could be used to take down an armed assailant in a confined space. The carbon dioxide spray will blind and confuse an opponent in a close area. Note this is a short ranged improvised weapon and will work against someone armed with a blade or if caught by surprise even possibly a gun. At which point you will have a chance to run and get help, or take the attacker down. Warning: Carbon Dioxide replaces oxygen so you don't want to really want to try and breathe while in a cloud produced by an extinguisher.

Umbrella: An umbrella can be used to fend off a medium to small dog who wants to find out what you taste like. An open umbrella will confuse the dog as the umbrella prevents them from biting your arms or legs.
