So work has been good to me, and my old, old 20" monitor isn't great. I'm looking for something that can fit in a 25" wide space. Not negotiable on space.
Currently running a i7-6700k, GTX 980 rig, so I'm thinking a 2k monitor, not convinced 4k is worth the premium right now (and I can't read anything on my 28" 4k monitors at work anyway). Firm $500 budget.
Whatcha got?

Clarification.. 25in as in horizontal across the desk? That equates to approx 27in wide screen LCD, approx 24.xx inches wide. 28in monitor would be almost 26in wide.
2K would be 2560x1440. Just trying to set some foundation for those who post with suggestions.

theres some sick screens out there .... WHATEVER you do, make sure you read some reviews, because the manufacturers never tell you things like 'ghosts like a mofo' ....

Correct, maximum horizontal width on desk is 25", so no ultra wides Some 27" screens would fit, but not all. Depends on the bezel.
Also correct on 2560x1440.

its honestly kind of hard to suggest you a product without knowing where you are better ... or more importantly, who you'd like to buy from .... if you had said, best 2k screen on amazon/newegg than it becomes easier to define a list and give options and or preferences, but that list might not be overly relevant, if your in Australia, Poland or New Zealand ....
anyway ... there should be some 'decent' gaming grade monitors in your budget and size requirements .... and although I haven't seen it in person, you might one to check out 'AOC AGON AG241QX', retailing for $520 AUD near me, probably less in other parts of the world, because of the straya tax and all ...
the maximum size requirement will rule a lot of options in, or out ... when gaming I wish I had brought a 2k screen, but its so nice to have a lot of desktop space on 4K ... but if your only really going to use the machine for gaming, you want high refresh rate, like 144hz, g-sync would be nice, but its probably too much for the price range ...
I could have been kicked out of a store a while ago for nearly drooling on a curved screen while trying to explain to my kids, why it was cool, and yes, they didn't care ...

I'm in the USA, west coast. Amazon, newegg, pretty much any major online retailer is fine by me. Got a Fry's nearby, but no microcenter within 100 miles of me though

Check a few of the brick and mortar stores first. Newegg/Amazon will have listed their specs. For 27ins it was 24.5/6 in wide. My LG 27in (backup/secondary monitor) is 24.5in wide but I am not suggesting it as it is not a 2K.
Definitely read the reviews. Consider the type of inputs and additional features, USB ports, etc.
Edit, double check the width as some of the widths on Amazon are not correct, in that they are too wide. Double check the mfg. It appears Amazon may be using the actual package size and not the actual monitor.
Example
ASUS Designo MX27AQ 27" WQHD 2560x1440 IPS DP HDMI Eye Care Frameless Monitor
4.7 x 27.6 x 21.1 in
But on ASUS site Phys. Dimension with Stand(WxHxD): 614.4x429.5x225.4mm 614.4mm = 24.188976in / vs / Box Dimension (WxHxD): 700x537x120mm 700mm = 27.559in
On Newegg 17.10" x 24.50" x 8.60"
