So, it took me forever to get to tier 4, and I'm screaming up to tier 3 (compared to progress speed from 5 to 4). Has there been any recent change to how this is calculated? While my play has gotten better, it doesn't feel like it's THAT much better.

Can't comment on how it was long before, but it took me 4-5 days to get to Tier 4, that considering I spent half of that time on Trial mechs and another half levelling and messing around with my Heavy builds. T4 > 3 feels a bit slower, though I usually get = or ^ even when I lose, though since I started building and testing new mechs I get poor scores more often. Still, climbing tiers feels quite fast, but I'm not in a hurry to get to T3 tbh, I'd rather have more training in more forgiving environment.

What is a big mystery for me is why there are players on T4, who firing weapons short after drop and while marching (giving away our positions) plus manage to damage teammates, as well as handful of folks on (C) mechs still. I have seen better teamplay and teams in general on T5, I swear...

Simply because Tiers are not seperated most of the time.
In all to me known cases there are players of one or two tiers above or below your own tier in your match while the majority of players should be your tier.
So there is always someone completely new, drunk or unable to use alt+tab correctly (that is how most shot accidentaly in your back misshaps at matchstart happen) in your team.

It is in fact a matter of personal play style.
Real team players with low shooter skills may have a hard time to get around when starting of MWO cuz the ammount of derp and just run in and shoot is so high there is no teamplay anyway.
Those players may experience that things get better when they reach an environment where basic teamplay takes place.

So solo lone wolves who just run in and have a remote sense of hand eye and hand to hand coordination may start of fast and easy and then get stuck in T3/T2.

To be clear...reaching T1 does not mean you are good.
It just says that you played some matches, that you collected some experience and that you now know the basics of mechoperation and how to make consistently more damage at the enemy then at your own team.
I saw player make their way to T1 in under half a year others play since closed beta and did not make it cuz they just don't care or are simply unable to master the basics of mech operation.

And some of us just play CW, and thusly only touch tiers during events. So, you may find folk during event times in tier 3 who do know how to tear inna the opposition.

Oh, that explains a lot. On the side note, I cannot alt-tab if I don't have side app open, the only (hard) way is via Task Manager. Strange...

If you're playing in Windows 7, alt+tab brings up the taskbar with the Start Menu... Right side of that bar defaults to a button that shows the Desktop no matter what may or may not be running.

It's probably just you getting more comfortable with the game. It placed me in T4 when I first started, then bobbled between T5/T4 for a week until I got a handle on what I was doing. Now it's a steady climb to T3.

Map knowledge, learning how to pilot your 'mech more intricately, understanding target priority and how/where to land your shots, becoming comfortable with your loadout/'mech's playstyle...it may not seem like you're improving much, but you're probably picking up more than you think.
