So my old laptop died and I haven't been able to play MW for a while now. Looking at new systems now and wanting to know what people have had good luck with as far as what works well for MW. Windows 7 is recommended, but everybody is selling 10 now. Am I going to run into issues there? Any feedback/advice as to what to buy or not, is appreciated.

Thanks
Dan

You will need to download and install a runtime from Microsoft so that your system supports DX9 and DX11 properly. That's the only issue I am aware of.

Simplest rule of thumb? Hyper-threaded dual core is minimum (do not get sucked in by "quad core" Pentiums, their performance is atrocious) and pick something with a dedicated GPU... Intel HD Graphics may work but it will not provide acceptable performance.

My personal advice is don't buy a laptop. For real advice though, I recommend asking this question in the dedicated tech thread. They helped me find a new video card that I'm very happy with.

Honest answer, any laptop you buy, you can get a much better desktop for the same price (or cheaper). But if you really want to go the Laptop route, I recommend the MSI series of gaming laptops, I very much like the GE60 Leopard, that is a few years old now, but can run MWO at medium details very well.... Only now just starting to think about upgrading my Laptop to something better.

Agree with folks above, laptops are generally poor choice for gaming.

Why a laptop instead of a desktop, even a small factor one?
Price range?

If you need to go laptop, and want to game on a budget, I have yet to see a better price for a dedicated GPU than is available on the Lenovo laptops.

That said, get a desktop for gaming. Less expensive for much better performance. In addition, you can get incredibly small desktops for not much difference in price from the large size ones.

Ok. Talked me into a desktop. I’ll just have to get laptop as well down the road. Thanks all for the feedback.

dmac28, whats your price range, brother ?
This Forum ´ere got enough brothers that will toss you a really decent setup within your price range, while still explaining all the pros and cons of those setups, just provide them with some basic data and then see them go "wheeeeeeeee" all over that stuff and return with some good stuff for you to ponder ;)

Have at it and enjoy !

Lets call it around a $ 800-1200 just for the tower. I've been trying to find a system with Windows 7, since I understand that is preferred, though I'm not really understanding how important that is. 16 GB Ram. I7 or I5. Ge-Force 2-4 GB card. SSD in addition to HD. Found a few Dell refurbs on Amazon and handful on NewEgg. Win 7 is obviously the limiting factor here.

For that price range you would not have to settle for a refurbished system. Just remember through on a refurbished, consider all the components. If it is a mfg like Dell, HP or such,on older systems the PSU may be proprietary, making it difficult to upgrade to support a better GPU. But with the way the prices for video cards have shot up due to the bitcoin mining schemes though, it may be just cost as much to get a a system from like Lenovo, Cyberpower, etc than to build one yourself.

The game works fine with Windows 10, but you make the system a dual boot and purchase Windows 7 to install on another partition. That gives you best of both worlds, while also allowing you to troubleshoot on separate platform.

Windows 7 * Service Pack 1 / Mainstream support ended-January 13, 2015 / extended support ends -January 14, 2020

I have not seen a newer HP like this yet. It has a Nvidia GTX 1060 3gig and i5-7400. The GTX 1060 cards are running from approx $300+, if you are able to find them in stock. The less expensive ones have had no backplate.

Currently marked down to $595+shipping. Amazon is defaulting to the 625 one. Click on the Use/New click further down the page. The 595+ shipping (608ish total) will be listed. There is one listed as used but box never opened for approx $10 less.

As for the refurbished systems, majority are SSF, which would make upgrading their PSU difficult or impossible without switching cases and modification some of the wiring. Never mind if you stayed with the SSF finding a few GPU that would fit it. This would be the most inexpensive way to go but would also require the most work.

Edit. Just FYI I am all for putting a system together myself. And for any using PCPARTPICKER, make sure the components selected for that price is not out of stock or if the site linked has a higher price listed...especially for GPUs..

This looks like a decent setup for the price. Returb yes.

/shudders.. That is a definitely a SFF with a 7-year old cpu, meaning the GPU may or may not even work with MWO, never mind the difficulty of even trying to update the GPU due to SFF (possible) but the issue you would run into is a non-standard PSU.

;) Thanks for the feedback. So you think I should go with the HP you linked through Amazon? Looks to be pretty good for the price.

SFF small form factor.

The HP one is an option, especially if you are looking for one which does not require upgrading or adding additional items to it once purchased. I was actually surprised by the cost and it is not a used/refurbished machine. The few I found of that model that were used/refurbish for that particular model was only $20/$30 less.

It also depends on your timeframe, how quickly you are looking at getting a decent system without forking out unnecessary funds.

I hate to ask but SSD, it that an external thing? I'm lost...

Solid State Drive. Internal. It's another type of storage device, used either instead or in addition to a conventional hard drive - more expensive but much faster.

don't fear much from Windows 10, only when they do a update, they screw things up

I have this, as back up or when traveling to play, and it does very well GL753L
