Hello All,

First time player here. I just started about a week ago, purchased my first mech bundle, Kodiak 1-5+SB.

I think I have some core concepts down but would like to have the chance of playing with some more experienced players. Would anyone out there like to guide a newbie like myself through the ropes.

Thanks for the consideration.

Cheers,

Syn

Look to discord and teamspeak as your first stop for guidance (go to faction play forum and a lot of folks have posted their units Discord and TS info in their respective threads). Most folks are friendly and happy to play with and guide you. Availability will all depend on when you play.

Welcome and good luck.

Clan mechs are easier on new players - IS mechs make a new player play better, balance is meh currently but not terrible.

That thread has a ton of mech suggestions, as well as multiple offerings for newer players to drop with experienced groups.

You will need at minimum 8 solid mechs to fit into either clan or IS drop decks for FP - you can squeeze away with 4 per but to play to the synergy of the drop 8 would be best.

KDK is an ok mech but I wouldn't build my decks around it as a new player.

Hellbringers/EBJs or Warhammers will be your best learning blocks.

Ash is good to drop with and learn from, as well are his unit mates and adopted parents @ EVIL.

Don't let the terribad that is Faction Play Siege scare you off. QP has plenty of variety and fun.

Since you're still working on trial mechs and your KDKs, I would highly suggest the trial Hellbringer to learn heat management and trading. It's a hotter mech, but if you're open to learning it is a good starter.

This is an alt account of mine, and while i'm no superstar I play with a good team. In that trial I average 699dmg/match with a 4.0K/D.

I cannot express enough how important it is to learn positioning and damage spreading now while you're new.

Rule 1: Don’t spend money on this game unless you know it something going are going to stick with AND you KNOW, through gameplay experience, you enjoy the mechs you want to buy. Keep your wallet closed until you know WTF you’re doing.

Starting out with buying a Kodiak bundle is great, it’s a good mech, but that makes you a target on the field. Go play with the Trail Mechs, do your 25 cadet matches and stick to in-game CBill purchases until you have a better grip on the game.

New blood is always welcome, the game needs it, but I wouldn’t recommend the group queue just yet. Solo drop, get your feet wet and die a lot. Seriously, die…a lot. None of us was awesome at the game on the first drop.

Due the tutorials. Practice a little at the academy until you have the basic movements down and understand your HUD and the mechanics of how a mech fights.

Try ALL the trial mechs. Not the cool ones. Not just the ones of one class. Not just the ones that are of a chassis that people are raving about. Give each trial a fair shake, in combat, until you have a grip on which style mech you like. What gameplay style you are better at, and use that information to guide your first CBill mech purchase.

Clan or Inner Sphere? No two mechs are created equal, and all have their own niche to fill and each of the four classes of mechs will play differently. Say you love Kodiaks, but you turn out to be a terrible Assault pilot but you find a medium comfortable.

There isn’t a lot of hand holding in the game. MWO tends to be rough on its legit Rookies with a steep learning curve and merciless gameplay environment.
You will be yelled at. You will be singled out as not knowing what you are doing. It will happen, so when it does, either turn it something constructive or just let it roll off. There are a lot of people out there who think they know better, there way is right or that they are always the better player even though they die in a horrible fireball of fail with only 30 damage done.

It’s a game, remember that. Focus on learning the basics first. Have fun with it. Look for a steady team or merc group. Make sure you have fun with them and that they aren’t all business or more competitive then you are looking for. I also suggest watching MWO Streamers on Twitch. Both good and ….. fair.. players stream. Find a couple you like and get a taste of what it’s like in someone else’s cockpit.

Thanks everyone for the great tips and tricks. I'll be hitting up some discords for some partners.

With my Kodiak 3 i'm averaging about 450 dmg / round with 2-4 kills, as I reconfigured it to 2 ac/5 and ac/10's. I understand the game mechanics as I used to play the old Mechawarrior religiously. I also forward faced all my armor to be a medium range mountain sniper.

Are any of you online today for some fun?

I'll have to look for my headset but I'd be up for joining you.

Edit:
Adding me on the forum is never bad, but better might be to add me in game if you haven't yet. (They count separately).

If you are already averaging 450 and 2-4 kills per match, you don’t need anyone’s help. You’ll be just fine.

Be prepared for some rough transitions when you hit Tier 3 and Tier 2. The potatoes who stand still while shooting, don't notice you repeatedly shooting them in the back, and who wander off their own will go greatly down in number.

It's been a long time since I could rack up 3 kills by standing behind the enemy and coring rear CTs on their assault lance with my ACH.

I suggest Stalkers. IS MECHs force you to understand heat management, weaponry, tactics, etc. Stalkers are sturdy, dependable, 60+ kph, good for PPC or Lazer vomit, LURM,SRM. Splat,MRM brawler. One variant has ECM(3FB), the Misery has a ballistic slot.

A belated hello and welcome to MWO.

I've still got that new player smell as well. Just started playing the game a couple of weeks ago my self but have had a blast so far.
