For newbies out there who want to get into the competitive scene, what kind of tips and advice can you give?
I for one just recently started playing MWO and I would love to play this competitively. The quick play is fun and all but it's always better when everyone cohesively works together.
Any help would be appreciated.

A S H has made this forum to help people play better in FP. The builds and strategies there should help: https://mwomercs.com...__fromsearch__1
This thread has some basic tips that will improve gameplay: https://mwomercs.com...ics-101-comics/
Be sure to look through the rest of the subfourm too.
There are also several other sites and youtube channels to help new players and to improve skills of veterans.

You can apply for a comp unit to pick you up here: https://mwomercs.com...team-post-here/ or you may want to look at this thread over on riddit: https://www.reddit.c...ition/?sort=new

Teams you should look into,
Use the below link for teams/season checking. It defauls to Season 9 (which is 2 seasons old)

Also, I'm assuming most units want you to carry their tags? I've been interested in comp like the OP but lack the conviction to drop my current group of friends and lack the time/money/energy to have an alt account with appropriate decks to compete with.

Use the below.

It depends on the team you are dropping with as to tags etc. Lower grade teams tend to care less about it I find. Hell our team last season was a mix of about 5 unit tags IIRC. But then we are Oceanic and we do stuff differently over here cause we are so limited for players that we take what we can get usually across many teams.

MRBC needs to host a pilot invitational where free agents showcase their skills for units to review. Like an NFL combine...

All of them vary in skill as well. The lower Division matches can actually be the most fun to watch/cast given the random stuff that can happen in that.
That said some Div A ones were solidly epic last season too.

For you are probably north american, ask a couple of teams if you can join. There is EMP, Dropship5, 228th (large unit with players with all kinds of skill - also they made the 3rd place in MWO Championhsip 2017). EON ist mostly european, also there is ISENGRIMM (also north american i think).

Juju is an extremely capable pilot, and proven Comp player.
Just try to be more nice than Juju, for your own sanity. We have only one Juju and wouldn't want to change him.
Any unit with more than 1 team would be a great start. I know it may put you at a skill level below what you demonstrate, but that's a good thing. I played in more than 1 region, when it was allowed so that allowed me to get more drop time. since thats not allowed playing below your level will help you immensely learn the methods and rules faster.
Oh, and don't try to lead a team right away. It is way more work than you can imagine.

This. So much this. When I started organising a comp team, I was still trying to learn how to play comp as well, and it meant I had a huge uphill battle.
Any comp team that is recruiting, regardless of level will always list:
A.) Primary timezone
B.) Expectation of effort - if you want to do this and learn, expect at least one day of practice a week, in addition to one scheduled match day/week. Some teams may do more than this, be sure to check what their expectations are.
C.) What roles are they recruiting for? A lot of teams are short on good light pilots consistently, but are happy to allow fresh talent the chance to try out for other roles if they're better than their existing pilots.
In addition to watching good pilots, take the time to watch previous comp matches on youtube - RHOD, MRBC, Star League, BFM - each of these comps has a different dynamic, but there are certain elements that are broadly applicable to all of them.
Take the time to learn spawn points on conquest and domination in particular for the quick play maps, since these are the two main game modes for comp play. There's a tool on the mrbc site that is of great use with this, or you can go to smurfy and check there.
Lastly, don't just sign up with the first team to approach you. Make sure you are the right fit for them, and that they are the right fit for you. I cannot stress enough the importance of being in a comp team with people you mesh well with personality wise, or it will irrevocably taint not only your experience, but your desire to turn up for practice and matches.
