I find there is always a few laser vomit mechs in my games.
And why would laser vomit not be a thing? Its braindead easy to play. Point and click with no convergence issues. Don't even have to lead your shots.
expose, alpha strike, hide in cover to cool down.

With mechs capable of 80+ alphas, of course most people are going to take the easy way. Can just farm damage like a lazy slob.
Nobody brawls anymore because they are afraid to scratch their paint I guess.

Lasers.
to much heat, not enough range, not enough DPS, to long face time, location revealer.
overall lasers are bad really really bad and are being over nerfed by PGI.

can put heat sinks instead of ammo - countering the heat
Range is equal to other weapons. Lasers have the most options in terms of ranges (in fact, as the damage goes up, so does the range. small>med>large)
laser DPS is some of the best per ton
Face time...not really the issue as about half of the weapon types have worse face time. (streaks, MRM, ATM, RAC, MG, UAC, clan AC, etc) Plus there are pulse lasers which have short durations.
Pretty much all weapons reveal your location except maybe gauss, lbx, and IS autocannons

Or because the brawl weapons and the necessary mobility needed to succeed with that playstyle vs others has been significantly nerfed.

Engine desync killed brawling for a lot of mechs.

lasers are meant to be stacked, so individually they are weak. they still win the alpha game every time.

clan laser vomit is also what i use when i run clan. it just out performs any other type of weapon that clan has.

As scary as dual HGR Annihilators can be, most never get to do anything. They either get picked apart at range, or accomplish nothing because no one's willing to support them.

Everyone seems to remember those times when a giraffe blew them in half, but forget the times where the Annihilator got STed while trying to clear a hill.

Was playing the trial direwolf with dual gauss and CT'd many an anni because they were all carrying HGR and couldnt get in range to do anything.

Seeing one or two a day isn't special compared to multiple laser vomit mechs per match.
I used to see this a lot right after the buff, but not anymore.
Widely inconsistent performance with that build and people have generally moved on.

There are usually multiple HGauss Annihilators per match, though that is still technically just another form of laser vomit.

Honest, I think it all depends on what tiers your playing at. When I was lower Tiered I saw alot more diversity of weapons and used alot more diversity of weapons because it seems like the more casual players tend to play more for fun and less for competition. Also you have alot of people playing in the lower tiers that don't really understand what is good and what is bad so there is that as well.

At Tier 1 however, it is all about the meta and unfortunately it seems like that is how you have to play. When I hit Tier 1, so, so many of my mixed weapons build that I used to love to play became ineffective and I have found that in order for me to actually have good matches where I feel I am competitive, I have had change my weapons load out to the very meta builds I used to avoid like the plague.

So honestly I think that the reason we have some many different perspectives about the game is because the Tier system forces us into playing very different games depending on what tier we are playing at. For the record, I absolutely hate Tier 1. The game just stopped being fun once I had to covert to a meta based style of game play. I would literally pay PGI to get dropped back down to Tier 3 or even 2.

I tried IS laser vomits the other day (in FW), and they truly underperform ballistic + ml builds.
Ac20&srm4s are ammo AND range limited, but would bring those any day on my heavies compared to vomits...

Madcat IIs hitting super hard plus the heavy laser shanagans nail the coffin for the IS laser vomit.

Something that can pinpoint (dual heavy gauss) or that is manouverable & tough enough to out dps,
is the winning formula.

Ps. The erll maps are rarely fun to play on IS side. 5 lpl means blr usually, and they are pretty hot needing good team support. 3lpl 5mpl bnc is playable, but gets targeted a lot & weights a ton.
