Anyone having any luck with IS lights builds using the light engines instead of the XL engines? Also, using any of the newer tech and quirks?
Especially ones we don't see a lot of anymore in the quick play queues like Jenners or Commandos?
Mine have been gathering dust since the lights got rescaled to a bigger size.

XL engines are better for most IS lights. Exceptions are the tanky ones like Urbanmech or Wolfhound, those are viable and good with both XL and LFE. For deadside Urbies LFE is a better option even.

I agree with Tutsdes. Generally it's rare that I use a standard in a Inner sphere light because I need the tonnage, Light engines are nice and all, but I reserve them for larger mechs.

K9 urbie takes both lfe and standard and still can fit plenty of pew and sinks especially now the heat dissipation quirk works. Also those armour quirks + survival tree skills = lulz..

Locust variants take an lfe just fine too though a standard simply won't work unless you want to run with three small laser. Posted Image

Pirates Bane on the other hand is pretty much stuck with an xl due to the ecm but you can wedge in an lfe 190 if you downgrade to er smalls.

Wolfhounds are really great with 250+ rated LFE's.

I play mine a bit slower like the urbie and tank it up for poking.

Now why would you do this? Its just a worse urbie at this point

Like an urbie is bad or something? Worse than good isn't bad it may simply not be optimal for some peoples playstyle. I do better with the slightly slower wolfhound with the twin snubs than the typical faster meta beam fits. Just me.

I don't see much use for LFE on most lights. The speed and heat penalty are a death sentence and thus only delays your death for a few seconds. Moreover, your tonnage savings on going from STD to LFE are marginal.

I am using a STD engines on urban mechs and some locusts builds. The advantage of using STD engines is that you can scrape all armor from your 'useless' torso (if you have a useless torso), and thereby usually already overcome the 'bonus' tonnage of a LFE. This is true for light mechs at 30 tons or less, with most weapons being on one side. At 35 tons you will notice the sacrifice in speed significantly, while gaining very little on survivability from using a STD engine.

I can see LFE being a valid option for 35 tonners as the wolfhound or firestarter.

As for your notes on Commando's, I'm more active on my commando than ever. 3x ERML + MRM 10 isn't a game breaker, but at its speed of 167 kph it sure is a fun mech.

New tech ideas on lights
Replace lasers with ER lasers
Replace Ferro Fibruous with Stealth armor
Raven 4X has many fun options with new tech: 1. Rotary AC5 + 2 ERML, or MRM 30 + 2 ERML

Rotary advice: search for a mech with good hard point location. Cooldown quirks don't benefit the rotary.
MRM advice: search for a mech with good missile quirks.
UAC10: works for urbanmechs or Panther
UAC20: Works for urban mech

I find that there are very few builds I can't run them in place of XL and still have solid builds. The loss of speed is noticeable when you blow a torso, but I'd rather be slower than dead.

Really like the Commando with XL, either 4ERML, or 3ERML and MRM10. Different playing style now running 160kph+ with decent range.

If a mech has heavy armor quirks like the panthers and urbies i'll run an LFE but things where its moderate defensive quirks and speed is more important like a spider I won't. Also anything under a 200 engine you're only saving 2 tons tops between a 200 XL and 200 LFE.
