I'm wondering how many people will swap out for xl to free up tonnage? I'm pretty sure I will be swapping out on most of my builds, I understand the increased chance of getting cored but the tonnage and weight saved seems to offset this.

Your thoughts on this strategy?

depends on the mech. scout could use for extra speed, and huge gains engine ton/speed. Medium also good, but probably 60% of the saved weight should i would put mobility, not so good in brawlers, heavy ideally no, unless I use the extra tons for mobility and armor (jagermech, dragon), and assaults i see little point if not for a big mobility boost, as they tend to be the focus of the combat and adding 2 sections that can blow you up, less armored than the ct, seems an harsh payoff.

Its a FPS. All my battletech tabletop knowledge will not prevent me from getting fragged, owned, and or otherwise destroyed if I'm standing in the wrong place. The least I can do is not to hasten along my demise by using an XL engine. :)

Since I will mostly play Light Mechs and try to get my Mediums a bit faster I will use XL Engines very often. I mean, hey if I get hit as a light I'm pretty much screwed anyways. :)

Personally I will try using XL engines on fire support/sniper mechs, but when it comes to close in brawlers, nope, nope nope, nope. I want my in fighting 'mechs to be freaking zombies.

Ceiling mech? If you look hard enough you'll see a Comstar logo on it.

Ye I dont think I will mount an XL any time soon. I'm a heavy/assault lover so although the speed increase is nice, getting cored by a destroyed side torso would suck hard...

I'll take it as a case by case thing.
On a light mech, like the Spider, with no ammo on board, it is a no brainer. Yes, if someone blows off the side torso, the engine is scrap, but if you get your torso blown off, chances are pretty good you are screwed anyhow. And if you can vastly increase it's speed, and /or upgrade the armor, it would offset the "vulnerability".

On an Awesome, you better believe I would go XL, cuz I will be packing a 400 into that thing, and having my max armored 80 PPC monster coming at ya at 85 kph.

But on something like the Jagermech, with light armor and tons of ammo, or even the Hunchback where you're gonna be in the thick of it, I might not.

The way I look at it though is say you have a hunchie(swayback) with a 300xl. Drop a bunch of small lasers or meds and you could rush in and harass like mad, or at least it makes sense. Plus you could probably still get close to 100 kph, to me that sounds like fun.

probably putting one in my catapult

i know everyone likes to go the attack route and put lasers or ppc's on, but an xl engine will free up some tonnage for ammunition

The Engine XL will be usefull on mech already very easy to kill, that engine can save your life.

I will most likely only put XL Reactors in my long-range mechs.
Trippling the chance of getting cored is not so much of my liking.

errm... so how exactly do they work in MWO?

they weigh less but you die when any of your torso-parts breaks instead of just the center torso?
