you cant really damage hardware these days by just overclocking.

gaming laptop is an oxymoron.

I play MWO on a 6700k @ 4.8ghz with desktop (MXM format) GTX 980 equipped laptop. $:performance is atrocious but form factor is awesome.

FWiW cryengine is hard on VRM's in my experience. Less than idea cooling generates quite a few blackscreens

Its hard to damage gfx cards these days because they are usually voltage locked and TDP limited. With a custom vbios its still very possible to kill them. Ive killed a couple of MXM cards chasing records

For all those who are wondering about my poor old PC here's a link to the config.

TLDR? W10, i7 4790, Z97, 32gb ram, GeForce GTX 760

Here's the specific graphics card from the supplier - bought in Dec 2014

https://quietpc.co.u...x760h1042-1042j

and there was no overclocking malarky, that's far too difficult for me.

after posting, i immediately had this twitch that told me i should have phrased it better.
yes, with custom vbios you disable many failsafe settings and rely on heady cooling solutions only

what i meant was in terms of starting msi afterburner and applying some 200 mhz boost.

Badly coded software can.. Even malware can destroy hardware.

MWO killed my brand new AMD card (which could easily support it with highest quality), back in 2013. I bought Nvidia afterwards, and there have been no issues. Bottom line is, I never bought AMD card again cause of MWO.

I actually prefer AMD cards for MWO. I don't know about the latest gen AMDs as they are more expensive than nvidias, so only run a 1060 6GB atm but it's imo inferior to AMD in regards to MWO. And thats been the case for 5 different cards over the years.

The main issue with nvidia cards is the micro stutters and the lag at ToD changes is twice as bad imo. Which leads to the feeling at least the hitreg is better on AMDs. Of which I have run 3 of in MWO compared to 2 Nvids.

Pinch of salt as needed.

It was probably Dust, a cheap PSU, Current Spikes, Voltage Fluctuation, a bad Cooler, a hot PC, malmanufacturing, overclocking etc.

Nope, none of the above, I do actually know what I'm doing thanks.

Oh and it happened in the mech bay as I was editing a mech build.

The Mechbay was in the past the most demanding part of the game as it had no fps Limit but afaik they have limited the fps now so no more 4000+ fps...

I'm not sure..... I don't even..... I just can't.

Mystere was illustrating not profession of choice, but stress. You are equating profession of choice to stress. That is not true. Many professors, physicist and mathematicians choose their professions out of love for the subject not because it stresses them out. It is in fact quite the opposite of your reasoning.

Stress in your ill choice to compare organics to hardware is equitable to heat on PC components.

Mechlab is limited to 30 or 60 fps. Pretty easy to check, just click f9 ingame.
