Are Server Issues Common?

Avoiding a long story, does anyone else experience severe server issues? I'm very frustrated at this point. Disconnects, failures to connect. Sometimes it takes me multiple attempts to log in. It often takes me 3 or 4 attempts to connect to the game server after map/mode selection is finished. Too often I get disconnected mid-game, but the in-game VOIP (when it works) stays connected. I've been booted completely and have to log back in and STILL the VOIP stays connected. I can no longer transmit but I still receive. The time penalties are getting ridiculous! Solaris is a joke as my mech is often dead before I ever enter the game. The European and Oceanic servers are even worse!

This is the only online game I play that causes me any problems. I have many dollars and hours in the troubleshooting now and none of PGI's suggestions have proven helpful. I've taken much of this on myself as I can't believe this is a common problem. How could PGI make a business plan work with such technical difficulties?

What I have tried thus far...

new modem
new router
replaced all household CAT 5 with CAT 6
Verizon replaced the 55 year old copper from the pole to the house
Router configured with OpenDNS for name servers
Opened appropriate ports in Port Forwarding
Multiple trace routings show a breakdown somewhere in Canada
I'm using Verizon DSL in the NYC Metro area (West Jersey) on the NA MWO server

Any help is greatly appreciated.

There would be tons more posts if it was actual server issues. And not all router systems will give a ping back for tracert, but you should post your results. Also, is it the same regardless of time of day? And are you the only one on or is there other family members?

You mentioned almost all of the hardware except for network card. But to be clear, cable from computer to router to DSL modem, correct? And for testing purposes, have you tried VPN, it will likely increase your ping but it may allow your connection to bypass problematic lines, to see if there is any improvement. Again, a stable connection is better than a low ping.

Have you disabled the security settings in the router, which does not disable NAT. If the connection is not stable, incoming UDP packets may be arriving in larger packet numbers, which triggers the SPI (stateful packet inspection) to close that port temporarily because it believes it is under attack due to packets being hung up somewhere.

Thanks for responding!

I am generally the only one online when gaming. I have a Realtek Gb controller on Gigabyte motherboard. Computer to router/modem, via CAT 6. I have the router's firewall set to minimum (LOW), which allegedly "allows all traffic except known attacks". I am turning it off completely as I write this, just to see if there's a difference... I have not tried VPN. I don't have access to a free one. Any suggestions?

There is no apparent consistent pattern as to when the troubles occur. I'll be swimming along fine, thinking all is great; then it hits the fan. Today it was during business hours. I usually play in the evenings/nights/weekends East Coast time. I've been trying to find a pattern for a hint of what's going on, but I'm coming up empty.

I'm a coder but no IP/WAN guy. I actually have no friends who are WANmen. I've never needed one before. lol


Sorry about the charts. The forum apparently doesn't like WinMTR's text formatting. As you can see, when I can get it all listed, I'm losing 70+% of packets sent to the MWO NA server. Each Trace Route is several hours of gaming...

ETA: Did another trace tonight. It's the top chart. Interesting thing is the node labeled <be100-155.nwk-5-a9.nj.us> is actually a server (198.27.73.29) in Quebec, OVH Hosting, the same company that hosts the MWO server. Seems like Canada has issues with their nodes... I would assume PGI would have to do the yelling. I'm in new territory here...

The game servers and routers won't respond to pings or traceroutes so that part is actually not surprising.
Why don't you try the European server? I have both checked and get ~150 ms pings

Pretty tired and not getting why PGI's host diverts from Canada IP to IP in France only to bring it back to Canada again.
Probably iplocation.net is not correct, ...except 288ms seems more appropriate for a round trip to europe and back.

If I understand this correctly, running WinMTR in the background while gaming is counter productive? That's contrary to everything else I've been told. I guess it's back to PGI for advice.

Thanks! I've been dealing with this issue for the better part of 8 months now. If it's accurate, I've seen the most indirect routing. Of course, OVH Hosting, Inc. is a French owned and headquartered company. I suppose anything is possible. If our internet infrastructure is so overloaded that routing must traverse continents and oceans, only to return to its destination 500 miles from the source, we've got bigger problems than playing MWO. ..

Here's the WinMTR report from my last session yesterday (about a dozen games). This traceroute clearly shows a problem with OVH Hosting. I'll wait to hear back again from PGI and see how to proceed. Thanks!

What CPU you have? If you have older computer, which takes long time to load the match, the server will consider you disconnected. You try again to rejoin, but againt if it takes too long you get disconnected.


Ingame voip works by separate instance of some kind TS client, that is why you can get disconnected while still hearing your teammates possibly commenting on your diapearance. So that's normal to anyone who gets disconnecte for whatever reason.

Ingame voip works by separate instance of some kind TS client, that is why you can get disconnected while still hearing your teammates possibly commenting on your diapearance. So that's normal to anyone who gets disconnecte for whatever reason.


A Core i7 2600K @ 3.7 GHz, 8 GB RAM & GTX 960. This setup is at least 3-4 times the minimum requirements for MWO.

I understand that in-game VOIP is a separate server. (What a monstrosity of an afterthought PGI made there...) My point was that I was getting kicked from the game server but kept VOIP, showing that the problem is game server-side.
