I'm probably very late to the party with this question, but I'm just curious and would like to be enlightened why PGI didn't consider to make lasers so you could actually hold to burn?

I remember in some older MW game, I could hold-burn. Why it ain't a thing in MWO anyway?

The older MW game you're thinking of was MW3, where pulse lasers had a mechanic that let you hold down the beam to keep it going for several seconds or just let go to stop the beam early. Your reload time scaled based on how long you held the beam (shorter hold time means you got to reload faster).

I think it could be a nice mechanic for some future type of lasers in this game (don't really need it for current lasers).

yea i really liked that mechanic. it seemed out of place on the pulse lasers though, i think it should be the mode of operation for any lasers with a duration > 1s. mwll also had interesting mecahnic for the xpulse. they would pulse continuously but at a longer interval between pulses. mwo seems rather lax in alternative laser mechanics. they got lasers that fire and lasers that blink and they all behave in the same way. there is nothing mechanics wise to differentiate them.

Variable Speed Pulse Lasers, perhaps.

I was hoping micro lasers would be "hold-to-burn" energy equivalents to Machine guns... but alas... it didn't come to pass.

I would like to have such a mechanic (in addition to the existing one) for more variety.

There are also different ways to explore, not just the 'laser-mg' variant. For example it could have a charging mechanic like the RACs spin-up time to give the decision on when to start/stop firing more value. The beam could also increase in damage and/or heat over time.

This would be sooo cool. So you could hold the lasers like a RAC on target with heat/sec increase.

And also other weapon mechanics: PPC warm-up like gauss would be very good for the game.

Whatever more controls over the mech action, to make it more like a simulation, would make this game far better and make more room for newbies. Right now, good hardware and fast fingers goes a long way in this game.

Technically ability to hold-burn lasers and increase damage (along with generating heat) longer it stays on target may be one solution to current lasrevomit meta, since short bursts would be doing piss-poor damage. It would be another hitscan like flamer or MG with a twist maybe? Or restrict it to particular laser class, to pulse f.e.?

What I don't know is lore stance on it, I'm not sure how lasers work in BT universe and if there are certain restriction to hold-burn mechanic.

I asked about this maybe 5 years ago when I didn't know much about MW games and lore.

Ok did a quick search and found it! Look here.
