During normal gameplay my frame rate is a respectable 55-70 FPS, depending on the map and what's going on at the time, but occasionally it drops to an unplayable slideshow. It doesn't happen every match, or even most matches - I played for four hours tonight and it happened just once.
It seems to happen most often in skirmishes consisting of four or more light 'mechs, and/or when taking heavy ballistic fire.
Any advice on settings to tweak or other stuff to look at, or is this just a CryEngine problem (or a problem with my specs - maybe my CPU isn't up to it)?
Relevant specs:
i7-7700HQ CPU @ 2.8GHz (8 CPUs)
NVidia GeForce GTX 1060 (6GB VRAM)
16GB RAM
Windows 10

Laptop. Essentially your laptop is likely throttling either CPU and/or GPU due to heat. All that needs to happen is for one item, even just one core, to excess the thermal threshold and the speed will take a nose dive for a few to allow the waste heat to be pulled away.
- Make sure the heatsinks (laptop's.. ) are clear of dust buildup. Do this on a regular basis and at least every 6 months dismantle it to get behind the heatsink. Even more important if you have pets of any kind.
- Power Options High Performance
- Plugged into the AC and not just running off battery
- Set FPS limit, if not via the Nvidia control then a customized user.cfg into the MWO folder.
- If using AA, which one? And what are the other settings?

if your CPU drops from its non turbo speeds to its stock speeds, that might give you a serious frame rate penalty
a while ago I played with a friends laptop with slightly lower specs, and as long as we allowed it to breathe, it played quite nicely ...

I've had this happen on my machine as well, and I'm running a desktop with:
* I7-8700K
* 16 GB RAM
* R9 Fury (4GB)
* Windows 10
That's a pretty high-spec machine... it shouldn't have issues like this. It's usually while lots of explosions are happening, and isn't super common.

If all else fails, this will help lighten the cpu load. here
The config file contains some threading commands near the bottom, you could extract those specific commands into your own config file and play with em to see if it helps.
