so if you watch, just before the shot, I looked over my shoulder at the cave where he must have come from. I'm assuming that he probably came around that corner just after I looked away

If it makes you feel better, I once snuck up on a Direwolf in my Scorch and blew him away in one shot. The guy never saw me for the entire game. RIP

In truth, I beat 2/3 of annis I fight, and its usually more about the pilot's ability to hit a specific component than the annihilator. I'm leaning against the idea of nerfing annihilators at the moment, figuring that that nerf will ruin the mech. If they nerf it, armor should be what they leave alone, as that's the unique feature of the platform. Maybe slow it down a little, but that's about it. Don't want to see it end up as just another samey 100 tonner.

I feel like the current challenge of fighting annis with a 60 ton mech really pushes my ability and helps me improve.

That was truly hilarious! I did indeed come out from that cave after you looked over your shoulder. All luck on my part. Props for fighting Annis in lighter mechs! It is indeed a great way to improve. I've been doing it with an ACW with... limited success.
