I've heard that kids try to be helpful to their parents. Heard, not seen. I usually see them having a tantrum in the store.

So, anyway, this one kid who likes to help his parents shred paper found a stash of bills, total of just over a thousand bucks. Kid, being helpful, ran the money through the paper shredder.

the us mint will exchange damaged money so long as 51% of the note is recoverable. granted you are going to spend a lot of man hours figuring out what shreds were to what bills but its a job that pays a thousand bucks.
