What's your best build for this? There's not enough tonnage for SHS, and not enough crit space for DHS.
Right now I'm running 3 HPPcs, 2 medium lasers, an AMS with 1.5 tons of ammo, an XL300, and light ferro... 80/80, 78/78. 12 DHS in the engine, 6 external.

Awesome with LFE 250, 3 HPPCs, 2 MLs, Endo, 16 additional Single Heat Sinks. I haven't played it yet, but on the testing grounds it could alpha twice with DHS (no Endo for crit space), or three times with this SHS build with the same cooling rate.

If you are alone and don't have anyone to help you peel off a light mech, you deserve to die for bad positioning.

I really felt that picking off big mechs that strayed from the herd was the Commando's niche during Beta with 8v8 matches. Add LuRM boats and double gauss snipers to the hunting list. Of course, with no charge time and no armor quirks, you better not get hit by those gauss rounds...

The game has changed over time. Stragglers are more likely left behind by NASCAR and taken down by a group than a light hunting for poorly positioned players. Aside from a few specialists like the Piranha, I do not think many lights have a high chance of sucess on a 1v1 ambush in the current environment. Contributing factors could be 12v12, PSR vs ELO based matching, larger maps, or the Time-to-Kill increases from Quirks and Skilltrees..

AWS-8Q
This is prob the best one.

AWS-8Q
This is good too If you don't mind .06 of tonnage unused.

I prefer having the 4 mlas so I don't feel useless under 90m.

Cut leg armor to 40. No one shoots Awesome's legs and they're also very small. If you need some more armor, cut cockpit to 8 or so.

That can be dangerous. If they see you brought no pants you'll die very quickly.

That is why, if I do lower armor on my mech's legs, it's only a few points. No one would notice if your Awesome is running 8-10 points lower. 28 points lower? They will notice that if they hit it once...

In 1800 rounds I have played so far, I've been legged less than 5. Lower leg armor is really not an issue. Hell, all my Heavies and Assaults run with 40-50 leg armor (with Exception of Fafnir which has tons to spare with a full build), and only lost legs on MadCat ONCE in nearly 100 rounds.
Seriously people, you overestimate players. Legging a mech will not reduce their numbers of guns so people never go for legs unless they're the kind of a player that goes for legs. If people see leg armor took some damage they'll just assume it still has healthy amounts of armor as if it had full armor, just hit a few times.

Now the question becomes, what tier of average game play are you assigned to? What average game modes do you play (QP or GP)?

As the two people who responded about the low armor are each tier 1 players (I know, I don't show my tier level), we possibly face different skill level of opponents. In our tier, if we see a bit of splash damage make your leg armor turn orange or red, we will aim for your under armored legs. Even if you are an assault.

It's a good idea to have armor on your legs, and not strip too much off for weight. If you are placing ammo in your legs, it's even more imperative to armor them up.

However, with all that said, I'll also leave on the note of "If it works for you, then don't worry about it." No need to fix something that isn't broken. We are only providing a warning caution about having too low of armor on your legs.

QP since Tier5 to Tier1. On heavies and assaults it allows you to cram that extra bit of ammo or heatsinks to make the build work.

You are in T1 crowd, so you should be fighting well skilled opponents (not always the case, but should be the average).
QP is different from GP, so some things you can get away with more on QP. So, as stated, if it works for you, I'm not going to knock it.

The difference may be with GP. I know I tend to play more GP than QP/solo anymore. In GP, it's far more likely that if someone noticed an armor deficiency, they are more likely to relay that to their teammates.

Now, mind. I'm only presenting not going "too" low on leg armor as advice. It's not written in stone (that I know of).

Oh, going too low would be highly suicidal as even LRMs would take care of them then.

And, as demonstrated here, each person's "too low" is going to be slightly different. Some people are willing to go lower than others.
