Was there any news on the AMA about a steam-free version of MW5?

Would be nice to get the extra MWO content without being shoehorned onto steam.

I want to say that PGI said you'd be able to buy directly from them, but I have no link for it.

I seem to recall statements made during the 'MechCon that indicated this would NOT be available via Steam.

Won't swear to it, I could be mis-remembering or I misunderstood.

This better not be another game bought off by Epic to be an Epic Store exclusive. I have no desire to aid in further Balkanization of my games library.

Aaaaaannnnndddd... how would PGI get the 'Steam-free' version of the game to the prospective player? Invest in a boxed version, to put on a shelf in a store? Set up their own dedicated download server and payment / license management system? (Yeah sure, "Programming is hard" PGI.)

Could easily use GoG or re-purpose MWO portal...it's not super difficult to not use steam.

It's just usually better for Devs to use steam.

They already have a game you can download from PGI, right? All they need to do is ditch with online pay provider that people have so many problems with (Or have they already? Can anyone who preorderd already comment on that?).

Wouldn't make much sense for this game to release on steam since it runs on unreal engine, and epic offer to cover the 5% licensing fees for the engine from the mere 12% cut they take from revenue

Id be disappointed if it wasn't an epic exclusive

Edit: i just checked the faq and it states you will be receiving a steam key, im guessing since mw5 has been in development for quite a while pgi probably still has a contract with steam wich is a shame since getting to keep all that revenue would definetly have benefitted the game more in the long run

You can get a code that works for steam.

Not sure if you can download it direct but I'm sure you can.

I don't even use Steam for MWO. I shut Steam down when playing MWO as Steam can occasionally eat some of my bandwidth increasing my latency 10-15 percent...

I could have sworn I read you would have to redeem through Steam. And there was mention of it going to GOG as well. But only post launch. Not as part of the launch. I could be wrong. I can't recall where I read this in particular. x.x

Steam has very very good consumer protection and return policies.
Yes, they do take a cut of the cost but a lot of red flags go up when developers announce that they won't be offering their new game on steam.

It often means their game is crap, they know it's crap but they're gonna take your money anyway and not return it. Just look at recent news from bethesda and ea.

There are consequences for using Epic as a platform. Their server's have been having issues with big releases on their platforms, they don't offer any kind of support for things like mods (PGI has said MW5 will use Steam's mod platform), and they have not yet proven to have a substantial market place to exploit like Steam has, only a theoretical one based largely on the installation base of a bunch of kids playing F2P games.

It's not as simple as 'We get a bigger cut.' That means little if you end up selling less games and having to spend money hosting and managing crap yourself.

I dont think hes hating, i think hes generally concerned as we all should be. Steam is okay but everyone tends to forget its a 3rd party drm software.
And valves track record is also has a problematic thing to consider since they are making huge profit from selling other peoples games. Then lets not forget what happened after steam greenlight......

I think a physical copy would be nice or at least an option for buyer to buy mw5 separately without the steam requirement. Obviously if people want to purchase Mw5 on steam that should totally be an option.
