Beginning of the End

Black and White, 1957

For those who love the old 50's style black and white horror sci-fi monster movie, this is once potential classic. Giant grasshopper attack.

The movie begins with a couple out at a make out spot and is highlighted by the girls scream at some unseen foe. Soon after the car is found crushed. As police investigate the scene they discover that a small town has been completely destroyed. When a lady reporter comes upon a military road block she is sure she has found a story and in doing so discovers an agriculture lab where strawberries are as big as a beach ball. While examining a destroyed grain building they learn that overgrown locusts are to blame. Soon the national guard gets involved and wages a pitched battle against the insects. Soon Chicago finds itself under attack, and eventfully the locusts are lured out to the lake.

This black and white classic features a swift plot line, some mystery, as well as scenes of tanks blasting away at giant (although somewhat blurry) locusts. Might scare young children, however most of us who enjoy old classic monster movies wont have a problem watching the show, although the blurred grasshoppers might have you reaching for your reading glasses (won't help). Clean, monster fun.
