Black Lanner is one of the worst mechs available so you should avoid it.

Sun Spider is a viable mech but not the best out there. It's an okay choice if you want to lean more towards ballistic or missile loadouts.

My recommendations would be:

Hellbringer: If you like high-mounted lasers and ECM, this mech is unrivaled in the laser vomit role

Ebon Jaguar: Can also do high-mounted lasers but has more pod space to do ballistics if you want that

Linebacker: If you have a need for speed this mech has absurd agility for its size and can run down most mediums easily

Mad Dog: If you want to boat a bunch of missiles you can use the MDD-A, or if you want a pair of big missiles you can use the MDD-Prime

Summoner: An agile specialist, good for either ERPPC poptarting or SRM/SSRM boating

Orion IIC: Pack a bunch of SRMs and LBX and go brawl to your heart's content

People say mostly good things about the Vapor Eagle but I haven't used one yet so I'm not in much position to chip in on that mech.

Mad Dog or Huntsman.

They can both support a variety of builds.

Most other mechs have a niche build that works really well but these two are the best for "beginners" and give you a better feel for clantech.

Sunspider isn't a bad shout. Stay away from the Lanner, I've always loved it but it plays like an overgrown, under-gunned clan light.

Everyone is different. I for one do quite well with my black lanner.

Here's my top pick for each weight class:

Light: Arctic Cheetah
Medium: Stormcrow
Heavy: Hellbringer
Assault: Mad Cat MkII

Black Lanner, Viper, and Mist Lynx should be avoided for your first clan mech. They are just too tonnage starved to really get a handle on the tech.

Strongly recommend Huntsman as your first because out of all the omnimechs in the game, it has the widest range of omnipods, allowing you to configure it any which way you can imagine. It also has a reasonable amount of free pod space to work with, decent geometry, and solid mobility.

Right now i'm looking at the Hellbringer and the huntsmans but I can't seem to find any kind of bundle with the hellbringer so that may make my choice, get the huntsman bundle then grind up cbills for the hellbringer

Sounds like a plan.

The Black Lanner is a medium mech and has not enough free tonage to cary a good loadout. Maybe not the best mech to start with clan mechs.

The Sun Spider is very interesting mech and can use even ecm. I recommend to stay on Long range with this mech because the side Torsos are a Little bit fragile. 29 free tons!

Other good clan mechs:

Definitely the Ebon Jaguar with high mounted hard Points and 28 free tons.

Hellbringer with some hight mounted weapons and Ecm, good for laser builds and a solid work horse.

Huntsman: versatile medium mech, some hight mounted weapons and jump jets.

Good 55 t mechs: Stormcrow (fast Omnimech) and the Vapour Eagle (fast Clan Battlemech, you have to buy it with MC's because it's new)

Blood Asp and Mad Cat IIc are interesting clan Options if you are interested in assaults.

There are a lot of other interesting Clan mechs depending on your Play style.

HBR.
Not that it's OP but nothing holds a candle to how powerful it can be in most hands. Nevermind someone very capable.

If I were just staring to buy Clan mechs, these are the ones I'd buy:

Light: Piranha
Medium: Huntsman, Vapor Eagle (out for C-bills soon), Hunchback IIC, Stormcrow
Heavy: Hellbringer, Ebon Jaguar, Linebacker
Assault: Mad Cat MK2 (B and DS), Blood Asp-A

Piranha is probably not a good choice for a starter light (or starter mech in general) because it needs to know the exact time when to engage or else it might get instagibbed if it is seen by the wrong enemy at the wrong time.

Hunch IIC is good but its low agility and boxy hitboxes can sometimes make it fragile compared to other mediums (especially quirked IS mediums that the thread creator is presumably accommodated with). It makes more sense to use in experienced hands that can mitigate those weaknesses.

Onion IIC.

Its nasty in a brawl and can carry a rather large amount of weapons at a decent speed. also one of the few clan mechs to get armor quirks.

The hero is particular can burst up to 100kph with MASC and mobility tree and carry a LB20, ASRM6 and 4 MPLs

The ONI-IIC can hit 77kph and pack 3 mpls, 3 srm6 and a LB20 and can have 111 CT armor and 76 ST armor.

The Sun Spider is pretty good to but ive only tried the free hero

If you're going with the Hellbringer...
Clan Wave 2 has the Invasion variant. Use the A La Carte option to get the Hellbringer on its own.
Otherwise, Clan Heroes 2 has the Hero variant, the Virago. The Hero is probably a better buy as it's Omnipods fill in a couple options that the Invasion and C-Bill variants lack.

Edit: Personally, my personal biases lean me more towards the Ebon Jaguar. Namely the better free weight and the shorter but wider profile. Also, I started with the Ebon Jag and not the Hellbringer. The Ebon Jag does lack ECM though; but it's not much of a loss, at least to me. Both mechs are quite good though.

I will also recommend Huntsman because you can do a lot with it and you are sure to find something that works for you. Same thing with Vapor Eagle.

Hellbringer or Ebon Jag if you want the true clan meta laservomit experience

Orion IIC and Linebackers make good brawlers, though the latter is more of a skirmisher

Wouldn't recommend Black Lanner for a first mech because they can be a bit tricky to play - especially if you go with a short range build to make up for the lack of tonnage

Hellbringer came out before the mechpacks / bundles concept became the monthly norm.

The original clan mechs bundle was made up of half a dozen different mechs .

oh well, so I guess it's between the Huntsman or madcat II none of the heavy clan bundles were really recommended med or assault BIG difference in playstyle

All Hellbringer variants run the same builds so there's no benefit to owning multiple anyways. The only one where you'd ever want to consider the stock Omnipods is the Virago, but even then the Virago can still run all the other builds the C-Bill variants can run.
