well not even fusion is the saviour unless you are able to creat fusion fuel from nothing.
hydrogen is a power transformator. its not ready available. you need energy to produce deuterium or tritium.
as well as chemical fuel is great for power storage. Fuel is nothing different but safed sun-energy.
you should keep this simple equtation in the back of your mind when you are following the debattes. usually politicans and their lobby despise very basic physical principles.
well if it would be me i would try to use solar power projected by metal parabolic devices to heat something like a salt (great thermal energy storage) that could be used to convert "trapped" CO2 from burning fossil fuels back into "clean" Diesel.
so i reliable energy delivery- sun and good chemical storrage and less CO2.

entropy will calleth no matter what fuel you are using. nuclear fuels give you a lot of bang for your buck and supply of nuclear fuel is significantly greater than fossil fuels. its also widely available in the universe as a whole.
the us military wants electric ships with railguns and powered by fuel extracted from sea water. what fusion does is expand your power capabilities by a couple orders of magnitude. politicians either want to be the first to control the new technology or will have to contend with ones that do. this is why the skunk works has their own fusion machine.
fusion aficionados always quote the environmental advantages of fusion, but completely neglect the sociopolitical aspects. you will bankrupt the oil dependant middle east, and create a balance of power disparity that hasn't been seen since the beginning of the cold war. you will greatly ramp up manufacturing, you will see more megaprojects both on earth and beyond, words like climate change become design parameters, not a world ending cataclysm. you end up setting up wind turbines to dissipate wind energy caused by the thermal pollution caused by all the fusion reactors. its not all rainbows and unicorns.
its a technology thats going to come, i think sooner than most people think, and its going to change all the things. how it changes those things depends on who gets there first. the quest for fusion is an arms race.
