I grew up in an area of the world we have a cicada species that emerges annually. When you hear it at the same time every year it becomes more of a "sounds like summer back home" kind of thing. I imagine they would drive me nuts if I only had to deal with them every 17 years and I never had a chance to really get used to them.

We have those that come out every year, but they aren't nearly as loud because they don't all come out in huge numbers all at once. I have no problems with those little guys, I love the sounds of nature. It's when they come out every 17 years en masse that it's deafening, especially because they ALL come out at once and make as much racket as they can that annoys me. I went down to Greenwood, SC to visit my brother once and they just happened to come out while I was down there. They were crawling EVERYWHERE, on EVERYTHING. They were crawling into houses, cars, you name it. After two nights of not sleeping and having to damn near yell everything we were saying at each other, I got the hell outta there, lol.
