even future mech releases look bleak.

To be fair, the medium weight class is perhaps the most saturated in MWO. The niches left are extremely small, especially for the IS (like an IS 55t Mech with an AC/20 in the arm, so it can use XL engines), unless PGI finally releases IS Omnis. Men Shen might be a game changer, at least a worthy addition.
On the Clan side, I could see the Stooping Hawk reviving the zombie thanks to standard engine and centerline hardpoints, but that is very niche-y again.

I am a huge fan of mediums, and even I have to admit PGI almost did it. That is why the release of the Dervish e.g. was met with a resounding 'meh'. It does not do anything of note, it does not do it particularly well, and it was never a big fan favourite (if it had been, we would have seen it much earlier in MWO's lifecycle).

Other weight classes have a little more life left, but in case of the medium Mechs, PGI has to think outside the box. Not their strong suite, I am afraid to say.

mediums are my least favorite class i think. i still play them quite a bit as i think playing all the classes is essential to being a good pilot. also the more mechs where you have good knowledge of the strengths and weaknesses, notable variants and typical metas, the better you are to deal with those threats in game.

i make sure to keep at least one variant of each chassis and the dervish is the only one i don't own right now.
