I'd like to see some more advanced radar mechanics. Inspired by real life radar theory and radar types. I think it would add a huge tactical depth to the game as well as open up quite a lot of design space both with radars themselves and other game aspects that would benefit from more interesting radar mechanics.

Radars have a bunch of different characteristics of which many are inversely related (as you get more of one thing, it takes away from other capabilities) so a lot of customization can go into a build and in a mech game, customization is king.

Example of things that should be considered:
  • Radar Range (how far)
  • Radar refresh rate (how fast it updates)
  • Radar Resolution (how good the radar is at differentiating separate things that are close to each other.
  • Radar arcs (by limiting the arc of the radar you can get more of the above in a limited arc in exchange for blindness outside of those arcs.
There's a also a case for pilots wanting more than one radar system on their mech to compensate for very specialized radars (Target Acquisition and Fire Control radars required for missile systems).

If Radar arcs on some radars can be adapted to the situations left and right guards can set their radars specifically on those sides to keep an eye out for scouts while trusting the main body to cover the middle arcs.

  • LocationTo Nova or not to Nova. That is the question.

You might be interested in digging through the info warfare changes that were done on the test center a while back if you can find them.
Looks like most of that has fallen off the web but there are a few related discussions still floating about.
