Which did you prefer?

I prefer 1 for the solo campaign but 2 was the better for multiplayer.

I preferred either to the awful catastrophe that was Mechwarrior 2: Mercenaries.

...

Am I doing it right?

No MW2 mercs is pretty well universally regarded as great, Mechassault games the opposite.

I remember playing all three mech assault games (there was one on the DS, Phantom War and also minis made by wizkids based off the game) I do not know if I even still own any of them and it has been eight or so years since I touched the games but they were okay as games went but not really a mech warrior/battle tech game but more of a arcade game. I don`t remember any of them well at all but I think the order would go something like 2-1-3.

With that said, Mechwarrior 4 all the way.

I've watched some footage of both. I unfortunately didn't have a chance to play them back in the day.

From what I have dseen, I would have liked MA:1 better. It seemed like it was the most grounded when it comes to BT. It was also closer to the timeline I am more comfortable with.

MA:2 looked to be the better game functionally, but the hopping in and out of mechs a long with the Jihad era just sort of puts me off of it.

Is play both, but I think MA:2 would feel too foreign for me to really get into it as a Battletech game.

I had fun with them. I can't really remember the difference though. They kind of blended together in my memories.

MechAssault 1 removed the MechLab, but you could still pick your Mechs.
MechAssault 2 removed your ability to pick Mechs entirely, as Mechs were tied to each map. Like Hackmans, or Mad Cats, or Uziels? Too bad. You don't get that unless you pick one specific map always.

MA1 was better between the two for this reason alone despite sniper tanks, VTOLs and elementals being cool for the novelty factor.

MA:2 basically took the arcade features of MA:1 and +1'd it.

MechAssault 1 was the first game to utilize XBox Live multiplayer, so it getting a good score and being fondly remembered by many isn't a surprise.

It was also rather fun, the fact that people still give it a whirl on XLink Kai is testament to that.

Something people seem to conflate is that a drastic deviation from a franchise is not inherently bad...it depends a lot on the specifics.

For example, while MA is obviously not anywhere close to a "true MW game" in terms of mechanics, it is at least a good game in its own right. If it wasn't associated with the BT IP then it would not get nearly as much hate as it does. Another example of a deviation that turned out good was Dawn of War 2 (people have their own preferences about stuff like base building, but almost nobody says DOW2 was a bad game).

But of course there are also plenty of **** deviations like CnC4, DOW3, or the modern Battlefront games etc.

MechAssaults 1 and 2 were well-made games, they just were not the type of game the fans of the MechWarrior franchise wanted.

MechAssault games would be interesting to see revived as modern mobile games, as a counter to pay 2 win War Robots. Naturally, this would be a separate items from the PC games, simplified, allow for hop in 6 vs. 6 PvP.

Which MA game do I prefer? That's a trick question, because I love both 1 & 2. They're the reason I ever even found out about BattleTech and MechWarrior in the first place. Without them, I never would have become aware of the rest. The DS game was real bad though. And yet I still played through it 3 times because it was portable MechAssault.

Doesn't matter. What you need is a more accessible mech genre game to introduce the franchise to the huge legions of people who want to play mech games but do not know what Mechwarrior is.
