What is a good starter assault mech? I am leaning towards the MAD-IIC as it fits my playstyle quite nicely, but want to be sure before spending the credits.

Based on the information you gave, could be every assault, could be none.

I would go so far and say there are no good Assault Mechs for someone just starting out... Both Assaults and Lights are very hard to play for different reasons...

My suggestions are always Medium and Heavy Inner Sphere Mechs that are known for being sturdy. The longer you live, the more you benefit your team and the more you learn. Crabs, Bushwackers for Mediums, Roughnecks, Warhammers and Marauders for Heavy are usually good starts.

PERSONALLY I think you can't go wrong with a Fafnir of pretty much any variety

Anything over 64km/h is fine for new players. Much slower and it's a hard time.

So 80-90T MAX. No 95/100T mechs.

MadIIC is decent as it is 65-70km/h for most builds.

If you really feel you must start with an assault mech - and it is a terrible idea IMO - then make it a Mad Cat Mk II B. If all else fails, it's a meta chassis that in low tiers can carry matches on sheer brute firepower.

I was wondering as well. I already have a Medium Wolverine. Am looking at a Heavy Mech next.

Linebacker, Sun Spider and Orion-IIC are pretty safe bets, for IS I second on Roughneck, Warhammer and Marauder.
